I've noticed that many women here complain about doing most of the housework and finding their partners lazy when they don't do their half. It seems to be a big and trending issue, I see it mentioned more often here and in other subs. "Unpaid labor" and all that.

Here's the thing - every relationship is different. There's no law or social contract saying that housework has to be 50/50. It's whatever you make it. Someone once told me "if both sides give more and expect less - things work out". It's an awesome advise.

I personally believe that the partner who brings more $ to the table gets to relax more at home. Their contribution to the household / relationship is far greater than doing the dishes more often. You can get a dishwashing machine. You can hire a house cleaner. You can't just go and get higher income as easily. Work-work is more valuable than housework.

And since most men make more than most women in most relationships - it's more common that women do most of the housework. Also men in the US spend 4 more hours at work on average and commute 60% more miles / time per year.

On the other hand making more doesn't entitle you to treating your SO as a slave-worker. You still need to pull some of the weight. Especially when there are physical tasks that women just can't perform as well as men.

So to summarize: housework is not equal to work-work. 50/50 more often than not doesn't mean fair split. Far more women need to realize this and stop complaining about a non-issue. And many men need to get off their ass and do their fair share too.

\** PS: I've noticed a really interesting pattern, feel free to scroll the comments and see for yourself:*

  • Most women HERE IN THE COMMENTS see their relationships as two separate units under one roof and tend to write about how housework relative to finances affects them.
  • Most men HERE IN THE COMMENTS tend to see relationships it as a whole unit under one roof when replying on the housework subject. A family / relationship/ a household / marriage. Men seem more interested how housework affects both parties.

Any behavioral psychologist here who can explain that? \***
