Couldn’t you say the same about men? A lot of men keep pushing the idea that marriage is something only women want and benefit from, but men keep getting married.

In reality, marriage is usually beneficial for both parties. It includes all the usual benefits of an LTR and cohabitation and a bunch of legal benefits and protections for both parties.

I will say this and continue saying it. if marriage changes your relationship in major ways, you are doing marriage wrong.

Unless you are a religious person, you are most likely already living together for some time before marriage and should be familiar with how each other is with money, cleanliness, sexual desire etc.

If you ask me, people say that marriage changes the relationship, because a lot of people have children after getting married and within a couple of years have children. And it's those children who change the relationship itself in a big way, not the marriage by itself. But those children would have changed the relationship in exactly the same big way regardless of marriage.

Because usually when men push back on marriage it's to take away all the advantages that women get in it, while keeping all the advantages that men get in it.

A man won't want to get married but still expect his girlfriend to stay home with the kids or sacrifice her career for the kids.

Even though this opens the woman up to even more financial abuse.

Women have been on the steady incline of singleness and walking away from marriage for years now. Theres been a cultural shift that’s still happening right now because we see a lot of women choosing everything else over marriage and a lot of men shaming those very women for not getting married and having kids. so idk how sound this argument is.

Isn’t that what is currently happening? The marriage rate is declining with more women abstaining from marriage or getting married much later in life compared to previous generations.

In addition, we are also seeing the birth rate decline as some women are opting out of motherhood entirely.

I can only speak for myself but as a gen Z woman I have no interest in ever marrying a man. Sounds like the worst liability.

People still get married because they are in love. I also don’t know anyone who actually says women get NOTHING from a marriage or relationship. I see the juice isn’t worth the squeeze and they are giving more they are getting in a relationship, but not that they get nothing.

Women are not a hive mind. Being a woman doesn’t automatically mean that everything you say is endorsed by the rest of the women who exist.

Your personal experience with women responding to posts is anecdotal at best and illustrates nothing except perhaps your own confirmation bias. Including “…this message isn’t for everyone..” does not refute any argument, it just reflects the fact that you are in a somewhat niche subreddit, in this case one in which you know you’re getting pushback for pretending that inequities in traditional social institutions have historically been more advantageous for men than for women.

Same could easily be said for men. Seems to be a post here every week about why men shouldn’t get married, yet men still keep getting married.

Of course the obvious reason is because the men and women saying “don’t get married” aren’t the same ones getting married. Or they already got married and are saying it in hindsight.

Marriage itself is falling out of style, and IMO - it should. When things go bad you have to jump through unnecessary hoops to pull away.

I always laugh when people say that married men are more healthy physically and financially than unmarried men. Because of course they are, they always were from the outset though. Unhealthy men and broke men aren't prime marriage candidates for women. That's where the disparity comes from.

Marriage is a legal contract between two people that provides certain legal protections. Tax credits, employment and health benefits, spousal support rights if divorce occurs, etc.

Lol im not one to act obvious to how abusive and downright life threatening marriage can be for women, which is why i understand so many of them saying they opt out of it....

BUT!!

I cant help but also keep this thought in my mind that a great deal of them (especially on the internet) only complain about marriage being exclusively beneficial to the man because (traditionally) that's the only time a woman is expected to do anything in the relationship. That's why they still date, but are completely against tying the knot.

From a young age, men are a kinda groomed into the role of a boyfriend which will eventually evolve into the role of a husband.

Girls are groomed into wifehood, they are only taught what a wife does, which worked back then, when it only took like 2 weeks of "dating" before a woman got proposed to. That's why many they encourage against performing "wifely duties" without a ring. Not too long ago, your responsibility as a girlfriend was to just be loyal and loving to your man (which many of them cant even do lol)

Most modern women have a very traditional way of thinking, and part of that thinking is believing that all a girlfriend needs to do is look pretty while her man courts her nonstop until a ring is present, THEN finally we can start seeing the woman do work. So now they see it as an unfair exchange

But I'd also argue anyone thinking about it in such an adversarial way like that probably has bigger problems they should deal with.

Yeah they say men benefit more than women in a marriage, but then they say women are more impacted by divorce negatively than men, not realizing they are admitting that women benefit more in a marriage when they say that and contradicting themselves, and then trying to contradict themselves further by pointing to like a 2% increase in wages etc for divorced men that don't really pass the correlation is not causation snuff test
