I'm going to say something controversial here:

I don't think society discourages public interaction at all. Like, not the slightest bit. I think that's a myth perpetuated by people (cough a certain type of man cough) who have never managed to develop adult hobbies and structure their free time in an adult way, and who thus never end up in spaces where adult public social life occurs.

Society presents opportunities for interaction at every turn by presenting valid context for interaction. Basically every environment focused on a shared activity is a giant avenue for conversation. Ever gone skiing? Apres-ski is a friendship-speeddating event. Mountain-climbers on a mountain together, art gallery visitors looking at the same painting, language tandem partners, two groups of friends in a pottery studio, two lone men who ordered the same whiskey at a fancy bar, churchgoers in the same pew, theatregoers sitting next to each other watching a play, people queueing for the same concert, for fucks sakes, guests at an anime convention and cosplayers at comiccon: they ALL talk to each other. It's completely normal to talk to strangers if you actually DO SHIT.

The loneliness epidemic this comic seeks to describe is in fact an epidemic of a certain type of man not doing shit. Yes, there's a social mandate against talking to strangers on a bus, because everyone knows that people on a bus are stressed and want to get where they're supposed to be. If those guys ever actually took part in an active lifestyle, they'd discover that once there is context, people talk all the fucking time.

This goes double because when talking to strangers in context, the interaction usually is a bit more valuable than 'stranger, please fuck me'. Because that's the thing: it's not like these guys want to talk to 'people', they want to talk to pretty single women who are magically willing to fuck them. My theater-going buddies and I have had wonderful conversations on the play we're watching with middle-aged couples. But their lack of talking to middle-aged couples whilst enjoying a glass of spritz isn't what these guys are decrying, and we all know it.

That comic reminded me of a guy I used to date many years ago. He was talking about how society values individualism nowadays, and how he used to sit by strangers on the bus even when there were free seats, just to force this "anti-individualism"

I then said "You know you terrorized every woman you did that to, right?" and he was SHOCKED. It never even crossed his mind that women are routinely victims of harassment in public transportation and that, by seating besides a woman alone when there were other seats available he'd be triggering her anxiety. I would immediately feel unsafe. For one, a random guy sitting next to you could easily grab you due to being in close proximity. Two, it would be difficult to run away in such an enclosed space. I would immediately start looking at the emergency exit windows.
