I wasn't very critical of him initially. Not every person has to be a world travelling A type personality. It's ok to have a decent paying job, some hobbies and weekend fun.

I feel like what really made him NVM / LVM for me isn't what he actually does (he looks like he's at least feeding himself and exercising, and there isn't that much info on the fiancee leaving). Some people just want and do have a chill life, and so long as they're not sponging on anyone I think it's okay.

It's how he says that he thought he was better than most people AND he feels that way literally because he has gaming instead of watching tv shows... I can start understanding why the fiancee left him.

Also sadly if he's going to try picking up the new roommate's lifestyle, I bet it's going to start with the "dates a lot of women" part.

This is what bothers me about men who complain they can't get a girlfriend. They are just so empty, and they think they should get girlfriends because "at least they aren't wasting their time posting antivaxer stuff on Facebook", as if that was enough of an accomplishment. So many men are just empty. Then they have the audacity to tell me things are easier for women in the dating market using the fact that I got boyfriends as an argument. They can't imagine that maybe, just maybe, people are interested in me and nobody is interested in them because I am better than them. My life wasn't empty. My life was filled with activities every day. Sports leagues, tournaments, trips, travels, volunteering, jobs, clubs, responsibilities, social activities, extracurricular classes, attending seminars and exhibits. I never spent a day doing nothing. My weekends were all occupied with something. I was shredded fit. But no, guys never think anyone's better than them, they always think they are ace, and if they can't get girlfriends it's because "things are stacked against men and women get it easier". Also the second these guys start doing one thing, they feel like this is enough. LVM gets semi good grades in school? That's it, that's good whole identity, he's smarter than regular people. I had good grades and that was not an identity for me, it was one of the bare minimums. I still filled up every day with a bunch of activities. LVM goes from fully sedentary to going to the gym? Now he's a guy who goes to the gym, he thinks he's awesome for this. I saw that exact situation happen and all the new people that met him were like "oh that guy? he's the really healthy guy, he always says he's going to the gym". To me that's the equivalent of telling people you brush your teeth. I spent years doing 1 or 2 physical activities every day, various combinations of various sports. It never occurred to me to tell my friends every day that I was going to do laps at the pool or hoping on the elliptical for an hour.

While I agree that the roommate sounds like he has his shit together, I get so tired of people acting like everyone should be hustling all the time. Hobbies don't have to be a side hustle, enjoying yourself is not a waste of time and a firefighter's day/night is not equivalent to a financial analyst's day/night.

This guy likely gets days off during the week where he can do 'life admin' type errands, firefighters do get quite a bit of downtime depending on season PLUS he's getting cash in hand work which is not HV in my opinion. I see no time for self-improvement except for the gym. Where is the self-reflection or mindfulness, not to mention time with family/friends?

The financial analyst may not be making the most of his time right now, but he is doing a mentally straining job during standard working hours which greatly limits the flexibility of his free time, not to mention that kind of work drains you.. or it did me, anyway. I hope he takes away from this that he could be achieving more with his time and then works to improve the areas he is not happy with.

70k is a pretty good living wage? What’s stopping him from taking on side projects, investments, outdoor hobbies? Lol he probably blows all his money on pc gaming systems and video games. I also have a hard time believing OP makes that much and doesn’t have enough vacation time to go on a trip?

I just feel like if you make a good living you can also afford therapy if you’re feeling depressed or have low energy. But instead he’d rather whine about his life and secretly envy his roommate.

Tbh both men sound LVM. One is gaming his life away while the other is hooking up with lots of women. Meh. Sometimes the hyper capitalistic aspect of FDS really gets to me. Are you only HV if you work 60hours a week, earn over 100k, buy all the houses and rings and spend all your free time productively? that poor lady probably barked at him until she was blue in the face to take her out on a date or do some type of fun activity for years. she probably stewed when he huffed and puffed about going out on holidays, to see family, to see friends, to go to weddings. she probably grit her teeth and said something when she left at 11am to get brunch with friends/go to a class/help a family member, came back at 4pm, and saw him in the same exact spot on the couch with vidya. she probably had choice words for him every time she accomplished a goal, and he minimized it or didn’t care. and then all it takes for him to question his shit life is a normal man just... existing in his presence. just breathing next to him for a few months. my god.

This is what I love about HVM. They show, instead of telling how to live a better life. This man is offsetting the cost of his rent to afford the mortgage better on his triplex. We stan a man with life goals.

By showing this man that there's a better way to live one's life, it could give this guy the kick in the arse he needs to actually do something with his life.

In the same way that seeing a female political leader/ CEO/ community leader inspires more women to be ambitious, seeing HVM could either inspire men to be better or leave them to be smug about how much mroe time they have.

I think there's hope for the OP of that post. It's just a shame that he couldn't fix up fast enough for his fiancée. Sounds like he lost a real one.

In order to take advantage of that phenomenon in your own life, make sure your sons see you being doted on by their HV father. Invite your HVM friends/neighbour to fix things around the house if your husband feels too *tired* to fix things himself. Hire the hot manny/ male cleaner.

My boyfriend, or rather ex LVM now, all he does is learning about stock market or things for his job. Occasionally plays some game. I am not even joking, he doesn't have any other hobbies. Also he was a fan of Jordan Peterson and thought that he is doing heavy philosophy.
