I used to work at a supermarket and one time while I was helping a family bag their groceries someone groped me. I turned around fully prepared to slap them, but I was met with the back of a 10-12 year old's head. I looked at his dad and he was chuckling. Looked at the mom and daughter, they were up by the pinpad and appeared oblivious. Looked back at the dad and he still had this grin on his face like it'd been some hilarious prank. I wonder if he'd put his son up to it. I stared him down until he finally got the message that I wasn't going to laugh it off. He told his son to apologize but his kid ignored him, back still turned to me. He told him to apologize again and the kid gave me a flippant, "sorry 🙄" over his shoulder. I walked off.

I immediately started questioning myself and what'd just happened. Should I tell management? It'd be my word against theirs until security could check the footage, and there wasn't any security working that day. What if they checked the footage and it turned out that the kid had accidentally brushed up against me or something, and I looked hysterical accusing a child of grabbing me? But no, he'd definitely grabbed me. I hadn't imagined him grabbing a handful of ass. And if it'd just been an accident, the dad wouldn't have reacted the way he did. He wouldn't have made his son apologize. But even if the footage confirmed my accusation, realistically what would happen? One of my coworkers had been groped by another coworker and there'd even been a witness. All that happened was he was suspended for a week and everyone cracked jokes about it. Did I want everyone cracking jokes about me getting groped? And what repercussions would there even be for this guy and his son? A finger wagging from a police officer, annoyed that he was having to respond to such a "trivial" call? A ban from the store, when the store never actually enforced such bans? We're a touristy college town, there's a good chance the family was just passing through anyway. Then I pivoted to imagining how the mom and daughter would react, them leaping in to defend their precious boy who would never. I couldn't stomach any of it.

I had just gotten out of an abusive relationship where my ex would force himself on me so having this little dickhead grope me out in the open at my job in the middle of the day when I was helping his family was the shit cherry on top of the shit sundae that was my mental state. It was so violating at a time when I was so emotionally wrecked, but because he was a kid I felt like I wouldn't be taken seriously and that people would think I was overreacting. If I'd slapped him like he so rightfully deserved, I'd probably have gotten in trouble for assaulting a minor.

Parents are failing their sons, sometimes even actively encouraging them to become predators.
