I get this at work, in the last year I've taken precisely 2 days off sick. In both cases it was a matter of waking up, staring at the ceiling for a few seconds and thinking "If I try to drive in like this I'll probably be sick out of the car window before I'm halfway there".

Both times when I got back in the next day after getting over the worst of it several different female colleagues asked if I was over my 'Man-flu'.

I work in a pulp mill. Industrial setting, majority of the employees are men... especially on the production side of things actually in the mill. Probably 98%.

Anyway, a few years ago the few women who came through started to complain about all the magazines that would be in the lunch room or the pictures on the inside of the Millwrights toolcarts. So a company wide memo went around and all offensive magazines were removed, pictures taken down etc etc etc. Much to the grumbling and complaining of the older guys at work. Can't even keep a Maxim around anymore because it has women in bikinis.

Chief steam engineer is out one day with his daughter, she has to pee, but they arent in town but they are driving past the pulp mill. They pull in so she can go use the bathroom. A few minutes pass and she comes out wide eyed and asks why there are so many penises on the walls. Since there are only like 3-4 female employees, no one really went into the ladies changeroom, they took care of it themselves. They had plastered hundreds of pictures from playgirl and what have you on the walls and mirrors of the bathroom.

I think it's disgusting when working people dissuade each other from taking the time off that they need. When my coworkers take sick days, I think, "I'm so glad I live in a country with workers' rights."

People should stop being smug that they show up to work sick and start feeling bad for perpetuating a professional atmosphere that prevents their peers from exercising their rights as workers.

It's not even a stereotype across the board either. I know plenty of women and men that just handle illness like a boss, and others that want everyone to always know how horrible they feel.

On a side note, I don't think many feminists would really like the vacuum to be in the picture too considering it perpetuates a gender role of woman as housekeeper.

I always figured it was because being sick is one of the few times guys can be "babied" without feeling emasculated.

The case could also be made that it is more apparent when a man (who is in theory expected to be strong and a rock) is laid low by illness than when it's a woman (for whom frailty is supposedly acceptable). While it may happen equally, the male example sticks out in people's minds. Just a thought.

You know, I just can't get upset about this. I'm sorry. We can sit here and debate whether it's accurate, we can speculate on which gender can take a joke better. But the fact remains that each gender passes stupid insignificant shit like this around to each other and says "Har har! Good one!"

There are many good women who do truck right on through with illnesses. I'm a lucky man who has grown in up a family where my Mother is one of these people. She takes probably one sick day a year, if that. And quite often I tell her to take them, because she's coughing, or vomiting in the mornings, but she will go to work, where she is under-appreciated.

My point is, this is an un-necessary attack against men for taking sick days, and every good working man I've ever known has hardly ever taken sick days, but we shouldn't necessarily let the pendulum swing back and hit women in the face. There are hard working women out there. Though there are women who abuse their gender and the perceptions of it, for a gain, there are still those who don't.

I'm all for men's rights, but what's going on in the comments here is blatant sexism against women. They're not discussions about equality, it's heavily biased: "My female co-workers are slackers," "Women always get time off...."

The majority of the top comments are not about men's rights or misconceptions/stereotypes so much as about attacking women.

IMO, men getting the reputation for being crybabies stems from the way they process disease: either they consider it insignificant, in which case it's completely ignored, or they consider it serious, in which case they rest until it's no longer serious. Women in general tend to have some gray area where they complain but go ahead anyway. I have no indication whether it's nature or nurture.

My dad is a construction worker who never takes sick days unless he literally can't stand up. I have seen him go to work with the flu many times.

My mother always says that she doesn't have time to get sick, also, in almost 5 years that I have been working, never missed one single day due illness.

One day, I felt like shit, I remember i took some aspirine, and with the flu, bad idea, nasal bleed, but got ok in two or three days.

My wife always says this shit to me. So the last time I was really sick I intentionality tried to get her sick. During that time I was saying how if she got it I would want an apology once she was suffering.
