I'm from a "prudish" society, not listed

Women are supposed to marry as soon as possible.

Men pick women by talking to relatives and parents of the woman.

And still, sex is mystified as hell. You can't even talk about it.

As in every society, there are parts of the country (the capital for example) where men and women are somewhat free and they all get called sluts (though no difference there - if women don't do what you want they are sluts in most countries)

My cousin moved to the UK around 15 y/o, in his late 30s he went back home and got engaged within 2 weeks. "Because the British women have no morals". He married an 18-year-old from his (his father's) village.

The girl had to get married, might as well get a British passport out of it.

Now they live in Birmingham, get this, with his parents!

I very much doubt sex is satisfying.

Then, again, my grandma had a similar fate to the girl, and she gave birth to 10 kids, so at least my father was using that blow-up doll to the max - high five /s

Depends on whether or not the culture believes that sex is only for procreating and not pleasure.

Also depends on whether or not the sexual pleasure of the woman is considered important. In some prudish cultures the man's sexuality is catered to and whether the woman wants to have sex is irrelevant.

Just because a culture is "prudish" doesn't mean that they're equal to each other.

Some cultures practice female genital mutilation and penetrative sex is never pleasurable or enjoyable for the woman.

Some cultures sell girls and women to men, so they don't have a choice in who they're having sex with and can't sexually reject the men that they're sold to.

It depends on the culture, their attitudes towards sex, and whether or not the woman is even a willing participant.

Do you think Amishes or Mormons have better sexual lives? From what some ex-Mormons are saying I'd guess it's pretty much the opposite, especially for women.

First of all there's the issue of pushing people to avoid sex before marriage by shaming, making them belive it's sinful, dirty, devaluing etc. Whatever they say about "God's way to enjoy sex" doesn't seem to undo it. If your core idea about sex is that it's something you should avoid at all costs, I'd guess it's hard to enjoy it even when you're actually allowed to. Especially if as a woman you've bought the idea of virginity being your most precious gift and your only value.

Secondly, in these communities the idea of a "man's right" on his wife's body seems to be fairly common. It's her duty to please him, not the other way around and they're supposed to value his pleasure over theirs.

Thirdly, poor sex ed and a lack of contraception. Again, for women it's hard to enjoy sex when neither they or their partners are really aware how to make it pleasant for them. Constantly being pregnant doesn't solve the problem either.

According to many people raised in fundamentalist Christian “purity culture” who are now speaking out, the answer is definitely “no.” There is no automatic off and on switch for sexuality, if you have been told sex and “lust” outside of marriage is wrong your whole life, once you get married, there’s a very good chance you’ll struggle to enjoy sex at all. This is especially true for women, who always receive the brunt of shame in more prudish societies.

Now on the flip side, I also believe societies can go too far with pushing hypersexuality and promiscuity. Or more specifically, pushing a male-typical sexuality on women. Then there’s this weird hybrid we see in some countries like the US, where women are shamed for both being slutty and prudish... sometimes the same woman.

Divorce rates are always going to be lower in more prudish/conservative societies, but that doesn’t necessarily mean couples want to stay together. It’s just harder and more shameful to divorce.

There are generally 2 ways a society could be prudish or largely abstinent. The first is what the majority of them are, societies where sex is improperly looked down upon, but that also expect you to be completely fine going right into it after marriage. It's an extremely poor idea and the main problem with abstinent-only education, especially considering the significantly different opinions on sex in the modern times.

On the flip side, you can still see the charts where those that remained virgins until marriage willingly reported higher levels of happiness in marriage. A point of note is that generally sexual relations in marriage are no small part in overall happiness inside of it. What that means is that having a healthy attitude towards sex, but remaining abstinent, is the best possible solution. It's incredibly hard to find an overall society like this as most of those still remaining abstinent do so for religious reasons, and the only major religious nations are Islamic. They have their own issues with sexual relations, so even if they found themselves in a society like the second it's unlikely they'd end up well off.

Overall both extremes are bad, American level sexual openness and "sex is bad" level of prudishness. The ideal is the second type of abstinence I mentioned, but even without everyone reaching that, a simple change in thought and removal of casual sex from society would be an extreme good. Sex as a whole shouldn't be seen as shameful, but sex shouldn't be seen as casually as it is and that might be even worse.

Personally, I doubt the sexual lives of people in prudish societies is better.

I think it's both more likely that men will enjoy sex, and more likely that they will want to make an effort to make their partner also enjoy sex, in more sexually liberated cultures. In prudish societies, I believe the average man won't give a shit about foreplay and will just stick his dick in his wife until he cums.

I'm from Brazil, a pretty sexually liberated country, and I think most women here would probably dump a guy who isn't satisfying them in bed. In certain places cheating is also very normalized over here, sadly.

But anyway, tangentially related to your question, theres a book called "Sex and Culture" (I've never read it myself) by J. D. Unwin that analyzes the sexuality of multiple societies, and he comes up with the idea that the people from countries that are more abstinent channel their "sexual energy" into other productive things, like creative activities like art or what have you. So a country being extremely sexually liberated is like a prelude to chaos.

It's not really an argument between a hardcore conservative culture or a hardcore liberal one so much as people mostly just wanting what the dynamic was like in 2004 when the average man still didn't have the amount of issues stats are reporting today but women could still walk around without needing to cover up heavily.

In most of the *extreme* prudish/conservative societies, women were and still are essentially given two options-

. Be a Good Woman^TM- i.e. indulge in absolutely no sexual activities until your (usually very early and arranged) marriage, where it'll likely be your duty as a "good wife" to match his exact sex drive and never want it when he doesn't, or say no to him when he does, and so on.

This cycle is expected to continue until either he dies (in which case you'll either be under heavy pressure to marry again if you're still fairly young/healthy, or forced to stay single and sexless for the rest of your life regardless of how young you are, depending on *which* prudish society you're in).

. Be a Bad Woman^TM- i.e. you're a sex worker who is now obligated to basically have sex with any man who wants to to make a living, and has to reconcile to being objectified, abused and exploited in the worst ways for at least most if not all their lives. Along with all this, these women were/are also usually treated as total outcasts by most of the general public due to the same aforementioned prudishness.

And this awful treatment is despite the fact that pretty much all of these "bad women" in those kinds of societies are either pushed towards this line due to poverty (women don't have many employment options there, because prudes, remember) , or outright forced into it by being abducted, or sold off by terrible boyfriends/family members.

How on Earth are women going to be having better sex lives in societies like this? By what logic? How? I'm genuinely curious at this point.

I personally think it's a twofold thing. I think that in more conservative societies, sex can actually have meaning. You don't have to sit around and ponder what it means or what the rules are, because everyone knows. Nowadays even in this sub we have people talking about how they want a partner who sees sex the same way they do.

I think a lot of the sexlessness that were seeing nowadays is because sex isn't mystical. At first it was fun that it wasn't mystical. And now it's just ho hum. I've said in other threads that how that we have parent approved teen sex, Teen Sex is the least exciting that it's ever been. And that's from the mouths of teenagers I'm related to who confide in me. I think there needs to be a middle ground, but I don't know what it is.

I have friends who were raised in deeply, deeply religious communities, and because of my job, I've also read a fair amount of writing/memoir from people raised in those cultures.

They do not have healthier or more satisfying sex lives. Quite the contrary. People marry not only without having done anything physically with each other, but also without any kind of sex ed except maybe some basic "what goes where" info for procreative PIV. Newly married couples, especially but not always women, often find sex confusing, uncomfortable, and even physically painful. They will often have sex purely for conception, with a "let's get this over with" attitude towards it.

This used to be common in the US and Western Europe, too--when Marie Stopes wrote "Married Love" at the turn of the twentieth century, she said in the introduction that she was inspired to write it because she and her first husband had a sexually miserable marriage, and she knew plenty of other couples in the same boat.

Then there's the fact that in many of these countries (not places like South Korea, which is a wealthy, relatively liberal country with a bit more of a modesty culture than the US, but definitely places like Poland and Saudi Arabia), LGBT people are heavily persecuted, so many are forced to stay in the closet, and even marry someone they're not attracted to. Do you think either party in a marriage like that is having a happy sex life?

Nah, not exactly. They often go for less conventional way of having sex, and by that I mean prostitution. If women aren't having sex early, the men go find sex elsewhere. Men too would have to sign up to abstinence to eliminate the demand for prostitution, but those societies in modern days are very rare. Once married though, eh. Men would have to have full control of the household in order to have sex with their wives as much as they want. But in societies where prostitution is a thing, and is fairly modernized but with stigma against sex, married men often get sex elsewhere.

I've consumed a fair amount of Catholic resources (propoganda?) that bring up what sex life is like within a chaste marriage (only sex with spouse, no porn, no masturbation, etc.) The description is always the same: "It's more fun than casual sex".

My guess for why it would be better, is because the spouses feel totally free to let the sex make them bond with each other. Hookups and FWB, I assume, comes with having to guard your mind from forming feelings for the other person because they're not committed to you. I also believe that practicing sex in a selfless, genuine way (I'm not sure how else to describe it) just feels more natural. I know casual sex can be selfless, but allowing promiscuity does open the doors for people to practice it selfishly too (porn, using hookers).

I'm surprised most people here from prudish cultures say that it definitely makes sex worse. Either my propoganda is bald-faced lies, or there's some other factor at play here.

I'm from India. Gets prudish depending on the communities. India and Nepal are technically Hindu (majority) and pretty prudish. The idea behind marriage isn't a union of 2 people but families. If you pick your own suppose, it's your responsibility to make sure your spouse, your family and their family get along along. Family is usually mainly the parents of both people.

Most marriage don't happen like that. You get a bunch of codes and you have to pick one person that you can deal with for the rest of your life. If their are multiple people, you meet then all once. In most cases, it's sites dating and marriage. Unless there's (physical) violence, people usually don't get divorced.

The long marriages have nothing to do with sexual satisfaction and everything to do with ego. Even back in the 70s, it wasn't unheard of for men to ignore their wives' affairs as long as said wife didn't run away with her lover. Provided said wife gave birth to (presumably) their son. It was rare, but not unheard of. In fact, everyone in town would usually hear of those things. XD

Similarly, women also just conserved to the man marrying another woman if they couldn't have a son.

If you're familiar with Al Rwabi school for girls, you'll know that in certain Muslim countries, similar actions would mean death to the woman who spent time with a man she hasn't married.

Higher divorce rate has to do with both parties having the option to opt out and stigma around polygyny. Cz polyandry isn't allowed. In India, only Muslim men have the right to get married 4 times “just because (Mohammed did it)”. In other religions, doing that is grounds for the first wife to get a divorce and some sweet, sweet alimony. Technically there are provisions for men from other religions to have a second wife with the first wife's consent, but women prefer to ditch these days instead of dealing with his second wife.

The divorce rate isn't linked to happy relationships or satisfying sex lives. It's because of people's unwillingness to deal with unhappy or stressful relationships.

Prudish conservative societies are where men and women are usually the most sex starved, can’t or won’t get out of unhappy marriages due to the stigma of breaking up. Being forced to stay together does not equate happiness.

Healthy sex life is one where you and your partner both enjoy and want sex, by partner I do not mean life partner either, it can be a one nighter, a short term relationship etc. A life where sex is enjoyed in the moment and not a goal, no regrets after etc. One where no one asks or cares about how many partners the other has had.

I have several friends who live in Saudi Arabia.

Suffice it to say that the general sex life of most Saudis certainly isn’t “good” by any stretch of the imagination. Young guys and girls are thoroughly segregated throughout their youth unless they are married to each other…thus per my friends what ends up happening is a lot of almost homoerotic stuff between random guy friends, like guys holding each other’s hands and kissing etc. Don’t know much about the marriages, but it doesn’t sound good.

Women don't have to be forced into a pregnancy because of birth control and abortions, and social gatherings/online dating makes it more difficult to see the incentive in a committed monogamous relationship. It leads to a belief, whether it is valid or not, that there are tons of options, options that are better and will give you more of what you're looking for.

The way I see it, the happiness that came from monogamous relationships back in the day were mostly attributed to blissful ignorance. People are much more willing to settle with vanilla sex or settle with average looking people when they aren't nearly as aware of the abundant existence of attractive people who are more open-minded about sex.

If we’re talking about prudish because of moral/religious reasons then we’re not discussing sex in terms of pleasure. Sex is more about procreation and establishing mates for the society, not for fun.

And if we’re talking about sex in those terms it’s less about if the sex is satisfying and more about if the overall quality of life is satisfying.
