That's not what the study confirms; learn to read. It just says that men who think they are attractive rate everyone as more attractive. As in, they inflate everyone's scores, not just themselves. I could just as easily use this information to say "Women think everyone is ugly, but attractive men are nice and care about others' self-esteem, and so are more likely to say others are attractive to lift their spirits". Very flimsy excuse to shit on men.

That's not remotely what the study says; that's just your biased "men bad" circle jerk interpretation of what it says. All it says is that a guy who rates himself as attractive is more likely to rate everyone as attractive.

Men would never get anywhere if they didn't think they had a enough of a chance to be worth taking a shot, since they have to take on a significant emotional risk in the earliest stages.

But there's a paradoxical effect to self-perceived attractiveness, in which a person who perceives themselves as less attractive will defensively raise their standards to protect an already fragile self image, since accepting a less attractive partner would be taken as confirmation of what they fear about themselves. Worse still is the possibility that they could find themselves rejected or otherwise emotionally hurt by said partner, a truly devastating outcome for their self-image.

However, considering that their attempt to define toxic femininity amounted to "women are just so morally driven and selflessly given that it hurts them, how could men do this to them 😢" I reserve the right to be skeptical of anything a pop-science rag with such an obvious ideological slant says about intra-gender anything.

This doesn't mean what you think it means. A delusion is something rooted in a psychotic disconnect from reality; something which has no basis in reality. If men are out there evaluating their attractiveness differently from how others evaluate their attractiveness but most are still ultimately finding partners and reproducing, it's clear that there must be some grain of truth in their self-assessment, as evidenced by actual, tangible outcomes. That is not a delusion, that's a disagreement and one that these men in question could solidly argue against.

It's an argument with a clear line of reasoning that's meant to address what you're trying to overturn with this article, the notion that women's standards are insane because they have an elevated opinion of themselves. I'm pointing out that high standards don't necessarily come from a place of confidence, but also insecurity, and you can see it evidenced here: there have been many times in which posters, male and female, said that they weren't going to aim lower because if they're going to get rejected, used, whatever, it ought to at least be by someone hot.

Paragraph three however is just an opinion, but it's an opinion based on behavior displayed by the publication itself, which is a general trend of being strongly anti-male (as the APA itself has shown itself to be). Using this example, which in a bid to describe "toxic femininity" paints it as yet another facet of their oppression and victimization, rather than giving a similar treatment as the one given to men, in which the focus is on all the ways that they make life awful for everyone else. This, combined with a long history of such publication suggests that Psychology Today cannot be trusted on the subject of gender dynamics, because they quite clearly take the kid gloves to women, while actively working to tear men down, as is typical of any institution that has been ideologically captured by liberal feminism.

There is no objective metric to such. To some it would be what people generally rate their looks to be, but there's no intrinsic epistemological validity to consesus; large groups of people are quite frequently wrong about things (do we really have to go over the long list of things that we assumed we correct in history?) and so there's no conclusive basis to say that these guy's estimation that they're attractive because they can occasionally land an attractive women if they push through a sufficient number of rejections is wrong.

If a man pushes through a long string of rejections, gets over failed relationships and non-starters only to land with an attractive women, after being rejected by innumerable others, who is to say with what validity that he isn't also attractive? We live in a universe where the only real standpoint with which to evaluate things is perception and the only possible standard with which to evaluate perception is result: capability makes reality.

Lots of women wind up pairing up with attractive men, even if only for short periods of time. I don't buy the whole looksmatch routine (you get what you can get). The argument to be made here is whether this approach is actually working out for them, and as evidenced by the large numbers of women complaining about situationships and a lack of commitment, one could say that there is something wrong with their approach.

All communication is rhetoric. You just don't want to hear it because it attacks the credibility of your source; you're clearly not intellectually honest, so I think I'll call this good here as I've about had all of the fun I can have talking to you and your fixed ideas.

I don't actually give a rat's ass about the data, because the idea of the humanities as hard sciences is a sad fucking joke.

You can limitlessly reinterpret this information more or less willy nilly, nevermind the fact the fact that this runs smack dab into a definitional problem, because language is instrinsically baseless and ambiguous meaning that the whole thing is effectively a language game - attractive means different things to different individuals and it's not like they were hooking anyone's brains up to machines to measure neurological responses (even this is in and of itself an absolutely fucking absurd way to try and study any aspect of qualia, as what this or that part of the brain lighting up means in terms of a particular emotional state must still be interpreted and declared by the researcher).

My suggestion to everyone is treat all such studies with the kind of skepticism warranted of anything that exists only to ensure an academic can continue to earn a paycheque on the backs of grad students and to stop looking for studies upon which to grind their axes.

You aren't following shit. The article about the study was the proof. The article referenced the study, which itself referenced multiple previous studies. The article about the study also referenced the fact that the study it's talking about referenced multiple studies.

The article directly references a specific study, and talks about the results of that specific study.

That specific study, which you can find here, says the following:

Overall, men rated the attractiveness of others lower (M = 41.57) than did women (M = 46.27; t(157) = −3.00, p = .0031). Table 1 also presents self-ratings. Overall, men rated themselves higher in self-perceived attractiveness (M = 3.35) than did women (M = 2.56; t(157) = 3.48, p = .0007). The study itself that the article I posted directly stated that it confirms the data from multiple other previous studies. I think that when men talk about harsh beauty standards against themselves, they're talking about what it takes to be desired enough by women that dating is a matter of mutual effort in which they have actual options outside of "take whatever comes along" and "be alone", whereas when women talk about harsh beauty standards against themselves, they're talking about what it takes to get men to effectively pay to look at them through favors, perks or sometimes just straight up money.

This can be observed in the fact that when unwanted men talk about the archetypes they're expected to live up to, it's quite commonly just some hypothetical local playboy who's been blessed with desirable physical features yet the dialogue from women has largely been focused on media portrayal (what men will quite literally pay to see) such as actresses and models.

So when women say that the standards that they feel that they can't live up to are much harsher, they're not wrong, because they're measuring themselves against the kind of looks so rare as to be worth some actual money.

rant out of the way - I'd say I'm an "physically optimized average looking person" maybe it's better to explain based on some generalizations:

You know how in high school/college/etc. women gossip and notice/talk about the "cute/hot" guys in the class? I was definetely never included in those groups - not even just "oh he's kinda cute"
I rarely ever seldom get looks/eye contact from women (maybe a few times a year), yet I notice women giving looks to a friend of mine who is considered in the catagory of "cute" per point 1 - which is a good reference point for where I Stand (I must not be in that catagory)

3)I never get "active interest" - hit on, flirted with, etc. If I were at a party or met new people and acted my normal self (fun, open, confident) but did not TRY to hit on any women - I would never get any of this interest.

4) despite this, I know I'm not ugly or just dead average - since I'm in incredible shape / dress well / groom.

Using the stupid scale and assuming it's a normal distribution where most people lie between 3-7 and the further you get out the rarer that person is, I'd give myself a 5.5.

i have mixed feelings about looks tbh, on one hand the idea that looks shouldnt matter and what matters is the inside is heavily pushed, and i agree theres some validity to that notion, like looks shouldnt be the main reason why you choose someone.

on the other hand it seems that women care a lot about their own looks to the point you get a contradicting message, like yeah, liking her looks is shallow, but at the same time if you dont like her looks then she wont feel okay about this, i know because i was rejected once by a woman i implied i liked her personality but found her looks meh, she wasnt okay about this, and the biggest confirmation was with my current girlfriend, who asked me once if i liked her looks but in bad faith, so i made her a counter question "if i told you i dont like your looks, i find you ugly, but i love your personality and who you are as a person would you be okay with that? " she interpreted this as me calling her ugly and got upset about it even though i dont find her ugly, but she was hoping to call me shallow for thinking she was pretty, but at the same time she got upset because she tough i didnt find her pretty, logic?

so yeah, pro tip, if you re a guy pretend your girlfriend is pretty even if she isnt otherwise she wont be okay about it, pretending you dont care and you like her just because of her personality (even if it is true) wont have the effect you hope it ll have🤷‍♂️

Even the range is ridiculous and use of a median is. Whose to say that's a randomized sample, since when using medians it boils down to the central figures instead of accounting for the entire group I.e If you have 5 incels in group or 10 guys then the starts will end up with 0-1 to represent all men.

It seems you don't even understand what locker room talk is, or that modern men overreporting is far different from what it was before the inception of Social Media. I know people who've straight up lied about having 50+ bodies, I know celebrities that have lied, don't even get me started about that being the "maximum end" that a woman's can be, otherwise you'll be into the hundreds. There's thousands of survey's out there, each one clearly isn't going to be the be all and end all, you have to employ some common sense.

I also don't think you understand the actual point when social media was really at it's peak.

It was around the complementary conception of the smartphone, per say the iPhone. Most people didn't even have iPhones since their audience was for higher earning men and women - the 25-44 year olds like you used were people that grew up without social media at its broader heights.

Even if you look at both pieces of data, social media was nothing like what it was for 30+ years olds compared to Gen Z, the oldest of the Gen Z grew up with prime social media probably as they started puberty, and were 18-19 themselves in 2019. Now such people are around 25 years old in 2025.

Sadly it presents its data in a very raw manner and I'm no statistician so I can only go off the snippets of the data I can find online, but those I can find don't point to a particular explosion in promiscuity. e.g.

As for your data, I already said to in another comment that it's not easy to find reliable data because of limitations in ;

✓ Sample size

✓ Sample diversity (Job occupation, area of residence, age, height, weight, total income, social media use or awareness)

✓ Both underreporting or overreporting from men and women

✓ Randomisation, or discretion, if the people know what you're trying to ask, they're more to be disingenuous, for instance if the title of the survey is "Let's have a look at society's body count", you're probably going to get circle jerking, non-honest answers.

I'm also pretty sure I said the past is way before the technology we have today, we're talking before the 80s. Compare someone who grew up on social media and is 25 right now to someone who grew up in the 70s-80s, it'll be vastly different.

Women simply get approached way more, they have access to the top massively broader selection of men, all whilst those type men are less likely to commit and use them as target practice.

I still follow some of those girls I hooked up with and I see who they’re dating on instagram. I can fully admit that those guys generally aren’t a downgrade from me. The only exceptions I can think of are girls who were hot in college but quickly gained weight after graduating. Unsurprisingly, they’ve tended to settle down with more average looking men.

Most people hook up roughly in their league. The main exception I’ve observed were heavily intoxicated people in college, but those went in both directions. I know guys in my frat who managed to pull a drunk girl for a ONS who was hotter than any girl they ever actually dated. Some of those same guys also hooked up with a girl who was significantly less attractive than their norm when they were really drunk.

To me, it's not contradictory. You can tell if someone has good facial structure, nice hair, a nice body, nice teeth, good fashion choices, height (if you care about that) at first glance.

But if a guy turns out to be a terrible person like making misogynistic or racist comments, any attraction to him I had is completely turned off. Even if he's just rude to waiters or makes mean comments about the elderly, I look at him differently. Like... "bitch eating crackers syndrome" where the things you liked about them are tainted and you see their flaws clearly.

If a guy is average looking but has a good personality, I can start to like how his voice sounds, I suddenly notice how cute his smile is or how he fits into those jeans, I want to play with his hair or hear him laugh.

Let me tell you, of over 35 years of experience (since my mid teens), LOOKS have always come first.

For years and years, (and more years) I did not have this mindset; I went out with determination. Dating sites (some I was on for 10 years straight and didn't get a thing), the old matchmaker agencies, the cold "approach", yeah the clubs (even worked as a DJ at one or two), dozens and dozens of singles meets, a dozen "dating coaches" (yes, male AND female)

To this day, I have still not had ONE date.. Women have seen me and run. I've been turned away at singles groups upon sight. After attempting one or two female dating coach's "advice" I was asked by law enforcement to not approach women (LOL). I was even asked to leave community college indirectly due to looks.

Now, to those who are advocates of the "just approach women"....I get that it's big in the USA, but in my part of the world, the women HATE it and are wanting it prohibited.

My favorite part of this discussion is that it's just men telling other men what women find attractive. And ignoring women when they say what they actually find attractive.

Looks aren't everything. Nobody's face is the end of all of attraction. Nobody's height is the end of all of attraction.

It's face + body + personality + how he treats her + how he makes her feel.

For example, when a random stranger approaches me to tell me I'm beautiful and they want to get to know me, I'm turned off by his attractive face because he's treating me like a commodity and making me feel uncomfortable because I'm just trying to buy groceries and go home after a long day.

Another example, a mutual connection asks me out and suggests a place he heard me say I wanted check out earlier. He's very attractive and he's even more attractive because of how he listened to what I say and he makes me feel special.

Y'all focus on just appearance as if that's all there is.

People are whole humans with desires, interests, and personalities, and that's what women are attracted to. Not just some jawline or muscles or dick size they can't see.

you don't get in the door if you don't pass the threshold, and the threshold is fairly high and specific for most women.

It goes for just about every trait in my lived experience. You want to be clearly above the average, but not so far above that you become Othered.

Too tall? 6'1"-6'2" seems ideal, at least in the US Midwest. Beyond that, you aren't just tall, you become a giant (especially if your vibe doesn't fit your height. Think lanky tall dude or perpetually hunched over). Finding stuff that fits becomes increasingly more difficult. And your life expectancy is also shorter too.

Too pretty? Yes, it's almost universally good to be handsome/pretty. But too much of it and people start to become wary too. Men will focus on you as competition. Women will preemptively filter themselves out. People become suspicious of your kindness, even though the world is generally much more pleasant.

Too smart? Now you seem unrelatable, intimidating, etc. Some people get jealous and foist their insecurity on you. Others make it a mission to catch you being wrong to cut you down but also to elevate their own image.

Too rich? People are after your money, it's tougher to make friends/find partners who feel authentic, etc. There's a reason why the rich travel and date in their own circles. When everyone has money, it's at least less of a concern that they're after yours in a malicious way.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but i firmly believe their is an echelon elitist order that is preventing male hair loss treatment (or straight up cures) into being cleared for public use. If China tomorrow develops a cure that keeps a man at Norwood 1 for the rest of his life, it will take the FDA decades to checkmark it in the United States. This is what happened with finasteride. Every other month there is news about a new promising hair loss treatment that are in the testing stages, but they mysteriously never go anywhere and we forget about them. Something else is pulling the strings here, and I'm not the only one to suspect this. I think their is an unwritten, un talked about social custom that cannot be broken: and that is, the world is not ready for most men over 40+ to have thick full heads of hair. It would send shockwaves across the lookism culture we have today across the world.

🙄 men's opinions on how and to what degree men need to look "feminine" is just another boring attempt to demonize sexual attraction.
