"are you gonna cry every time you don't get your way? gonna act like a 10 year old childTWO year old infant or are you gonna act like you grown?"
FTFY.
Seriously, long before a child reaches the age of 10 that kind of infantile (i.e. "terrible twos") behavior should no longer be effective -- and the child should have already learned that years prior -- if they've reached age 10 and are STILL engaged in (regularly) throwing tantrums or engaging in "crying jags" then the parenting has been an utter failure.
How about the weeping? Male "No I don't like, don't want, can't do, etc" Female sobbing "Why don't you love me?!"
I have yet to figure out a good response to this other than to pretend it's not happening and end the conversation.
Try: "You wanna knowWHYI DON'T 'love' you? Well at moments like this, it's pretty simple really... it's because you're WHINING & CRYING and trying to emotionally manipulate me with this kind of childish 'tantrum' bullshit! It's ridiculous."
Then turn and walk away (more effective yet if you "chuckle" and shake your head a bit as you turn away).
Just be sure to watch your back, because that "crying jag" is going to be revealed as entirely FAKE and it's going to turn into "angry rage" in about 5 seconds, as in 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..
And you need to be prepared to "side step" that -- let the idiotic "rage" send them crashing into some furniture or something -- while you gain some additional distance (best if it's to a door or other exit).
Then you can sink the lesson home with a statement akin to: "See, the very fact that you abandoned the tears and became angry; proves that it's FAKE. You need to grow up and act like an adult; otherwise I'm done with you. Bye."
THEN you leave (and you "go ghost" for at least 24 hours, longer if possible -- because the "tantrum" bullshit, that is going through further cycles of: 1) begging for forgiveness, 2) expressions of more sobbing, and 'can't do without you'; and 3) more rage, revenge threats; (then rinse & repeat the cycle, probably multiple times) is going to be tried again, until proven ineffective -- and only THEN, after that has been "exhausted" will it be possible to communicate "civilly."
-- You need to comprehend that this kind of thing is an ingrained behavior pattern -- it really is "infantile" (in the truest sense of the word) and it SHOULD have been trained OUT of them in their toddler years, but alas it wasn't -- and they have continued to use it becausethe vast majority of the timeit works!; and it HAS worked throughout their life (first with parents, then with teachers & classmates, and now with you).
Point is you're NOT going to change it in some SINGLE instance -- assuming you're up for it -- you're going to need to go through MULTIPLE iterations of the above scenario (and you HAVE to be consistent, you cannot "cave") before it sinks in that the "crying" technique won't work on you.
And if you think that the above is akin to say "dog training", well you'd be right -- but BEFORE you get all "offended" about that -- you have to realize that the "dog training" is indicative of BOTH SIDES.
That is to say, it's an EITHER/OR situation. Either YOU are going to retrain HER into being and acting like a civilized adult -- OR -- she is going to train YOU into being her "emotionally manipulated" slave (i.e. she can "win" any argument, or get her way in anything, simply by sobbing, and you instantly cave/abandon your position or point or course of action, whatever).
Now all of the above said, does NOT mean you need to be a cold, emotionless "asshole."
There is a time and place for "tears" -- and even an understanding that while something might not cause YOU to cry or sob -- it might still be a legitimate source of a REAL emotional episode FOR HER.
But THAT is an entirely different thing from the emotionally manipulative weeping/sobbing technique -- and that "Why don't you love me?!" line (or any variation on that theme) is a dead giveaway of that.
Think of it in the same way as with a little child -- tears and crying after skinning their knee (or some other legitimate cause) are one thing -- tears and crying (and especially "tantrums" and "you don't love me!" protestations) in a store when you say you won't buy them a toy or candy, are quite another. The former deserves & merits sympathy and comforting (and is the characterized by a slow, gradual cessation of the sobbing & tears, i.e. "sniffle sniffle" etc) -- the latter needs to be not only ignored, but confronted/corrected (and it is characterized by an IMMEDIATE change in emotion -- either to increased tears and eventually, inevitably anger when NOT accommodated; or to happiness/joy if you cave, the key being that the transition is NOT "gradual" {i.e. the waterworks were "controlled" and turned on/off by a valve -- they're FAKE}).
It's not just fear of being seen as the abuser. Some people actually don't want to hurt other people, especially people they like (such as an SO). Being aware of their strength and knowing that just defending themselves means they will hurt someone else prevents them from doing so.
Just because the main concept might be simple or simply explained doesnt mean it's easy. I'm not sure that it was implied it was supposed to be easy. I honestly thought it was more encouraging tbh.
I didn't mean imply that the fear of being seen as the abuser is not there. I'm well aware of the existing biases in domestic abuse. It's just that after some research into it, i finally came to understand a little bit more about the phenomenon of men being victims of domestic abuse.
In fact, I've come to believe that these same biases are partly to blame, since a lot of women become abuser because they can get away with it, besides the whole "physical strength and size" argument.
There are almost no situations where calling the police for intervention is ever advisable. The only time there's any use is if an insurance company requires a police report to pay you out.
I had a girl hit me while we were arguing on the drive home, (we were arguing over some dumb shit; I was not a great boyfriend) and for some reason I chuckled a little bit. I think I was just tired of arguing and everything was so blown out of proportion that the ridiculousness of it was just funny in a sad way.
It really put me into a near blind rage. I slammed on the brakes in the middle of the road and started screaming. Then I pulled over and tried to kick her out of my car, but she wouldn't leave, so I took her home.
It's crazy that as furious as I was, I didn't think to hit her back. It didn't even cross my mind. It was so unexpected and out of the blue, so that might have been part of it.
I had an ex who was abusive both verbally and physically. We were about the same size, and when she got angry she would hit, shove, punch. It hurt, quite a bit. I stayed in that relationship for two years, for lack of knowing what to do. I tried to leave once, and she continuously called my phone demanding to know why I was ignoring her. When I went to go meet up with her to talk, I was greeted with a few slaps to the face.
Eventually, I met a new friend who gave me the pep talk I needed to dump her. "Why didn't you do that before?" some people ask... easier said than done, and you don't really understand until you're in that situation. You want to leave, but your mind just doesn't let you. But that day something snapped, and when I told her this was it, she didn't even argue. She must have seen the look in my eyes, because she stayed very quiet. Happily in a new relationship now :).
Anyway, the worst point in that relationship was one day when she was just nonstop punching me in the corner, shoving and yelling over something I can't even remember. I couldn't take the pain anymore, and after telling her to stop several times I finally pushed her away so I could get away from the punches. Cue crying, cue "why would you put your hands on me?", cue her telling all of her friends, and cue everyone turning against me. Keep in mind I used to tell people what she was doing and they would just laugh and not take me seriously, even police when I called didn't do much but "you two behave now" and that was it. But me pushing her away brought down an unholy amount of negativity on my back, and I lost a few friends.
Just wanted to vent. I never went to therapy because I felt silly for wanting to do so, because we live in a world where if women hit or emotionally abuse men it just isn't taken as seriously. But it feels good to let it out. This was over a decade ago, and again I am now in a very healthy and happy relationship.
I got slapped in front of a bar once by my brother's ex girlfriend. She just saw my standing in a group. I said "Hey, Abb....." Before I could finish greeting her she slapped me. Turns out my brother broke up with her two days prior and failed to let me know.
The next thing that I said was pure poetry. It got her angry while making me feel like I won, without physically harming her.
After the slap, I wanted to hit her. But I just looked at her and yelled, "I wont hit a women...........but I will punch a cunt!"
She went into a blind rage and her friends pulled her away before anything else happened. My friends and randoms I was standing around all bought me drinks the rest of the night cause they thought it was hilarious. I offended her while not hurting her.
Yeah, good luck expressing that logic to the five white knights in the bar who start beating your head in without knowing all the facts, simply because they heard a woman got hit.
I already been in a fight with my girlfriend and she was hiting me, throw object and anything she could use to hurt me. At one point before I lose it I decide to call the police then lock my self in the bathroom until the arrived. But surprisingly they told me to leave and find a abother place to live.
I totally lost confiance in the system then. Sorry for my english it is not my native language.
There's also really no such thing as "Strong enough to take it". The physical pain felt by someone with big muscles being hit isn't lower than the pain felt by someone with small muscles being hit. Of course they can defend themselves better (if they want to risk going to jail) but bigger muscles does not equal less pain.
I hate that people consider this some kind of feminist issue or men's rights issue. Abusers are abusers regardless of gender. A woman who would abuse her significant other will also abuse her children, so saying "they can't hit hard" is moot. Abusers of any gender orientation need to be dealt with.
Wow, I read this, and it's like you are telling my story with a few minor detail changes. Now add an accidental pregnancy and a child to the mix and you will be where I am now
Ray Rice and his gf are drunk as can be, leaving a casino, and she decides to start slapping him, spits in his face, screaming vile hateful slurs at him until he loses it and throws a punch. She is entirely blameless, he is bounced out of his career permanently and charged with felonies. Not excusing his side in that, just saying she shouldn't be excused from her role in that altercation either. Eventually, even Job had enough and lost his cool.
My little brother dated an abusive girl. The only time I ever saw her hit him I spent the better part of two hours yelling at her and told her if it ever happened again, I would call the cops. The only reason I didn't that night is that he was begging me not to and there was no evidence aside from my testimony if he didn't agree to talk to them, and I felt that he was more likely to leave her if he felt that he had someone supportive he could go to that would respect his wishes.
I'm a woman and a feminist and part of feminism is understanding that women can be abusers and they need to be stopped.
True, but by identifying as such and giving the impression of popular support, you give their behaviors validity to the average observer. It sucks that a few extremists and misandrists have derailed a movement that was once an undeniable force for social progress (not to mention one I once identified with), but that is the unfortunate reality. I have moved to egalitarianism, for which I have been called a sexist, neckbeard, MRA (as a derogatory term) by people that consider themselves 'moderate feminists'.
Think about it this way. If people who supported first wave, second wave, and sex-positive feminism leave the movement in-mass AND shun/shame the extremists (3rd wave) they will lose all social/political power/will and we all won't have to put up with this kind of behavior. Hell, over the last decade and a half, polls have shown that the percentage of people that identify as feminist have dropped from high 40s to mid teens. This doesn't seem to matter to many of them and the legislators that support the movement. Egalitarianism and shaming of ACTUAL bigotry needs to start happening.
Please don't give the extremists any legitimacy by supporting a once great movement that now treats men and their rights as cancer.
I'm what you would call an "identity feminist." I think intersectional discourse is important to understanding the myriad of ways sexism, racism, and so on affect both women and people of color as well as men and white people.
I also agree with the above post... Am I not allowed?
Yeah, I'm not following here. I'm an "identity feminist," as said in another post. I'd be firmly classed within the "3rd wave" of feminism. Although that in and of itself is somewhat of a misnomer, I think intersectional discourse is important to understanding the myriad of ways sexism, racism, and so on affect both women and people of color as well as men and white people.
Do you think myself and my compatriots wouldn't agree with the above post? That's a very serious misunderstanding, or worse, an intentional mischaracterization on your part.
I can no longer believe that anybody that is paying attention has not seen this extremist movement that developed within the feminist movement and the very real harm that they are causing to a once great movement and its public face.
That suggests to me that you are either:
NOT been paying attention and have insufficient information to talk on this subject Like this
purposefully trying to make identification of this problem seem crazy or infantile because you are in denial that it is happening and you don't want to believe it.
are part of this extremist group and do not see your actions/beliefs as extreme
not part of the extremist group, but want them to keep doing what they are doing because it benefits you all the same
or are a troll
If any 5 of these are the case, your opinion should probably be ignored.
If you and the people among the feminist movement are truly egalitarian, then why not call yourself egalitarianists. The benefits are three fold:
It would dis-empower the extremists in feminism as they could no longer claim they are speaking for a large swath of people
Gets the ball rolling on getting everyone's rights being seen as a collective issue (equality)
Reduces social fracturing and the chances of divide and conquer coming from above, and the more negative aspects of identity politics.
Could the egalitarian movement be corrupted in the same way? Yes, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it, and if we learn from the lessons of feminism and its extremists... maybe we could head of the same problem in the future.
.... or we could stick our heads in the sand and say feminism is still a untarnished force for social good.
I have a fruend who continuously gets assaulted by his ex girlfriend. It all started when he broke up with her for cheating on him with multiple men and her own cousin, she left him with cuts all over his face. She did this in front of two police officers, who just watched and when asked "What if he defended himself?" They replied that they would arrest him. She still shows up at his house sometimes at 3 am but the cops won't do shit.
Why on earth would anyone think that women consider this normal behavior? I'm sorry if you are abused. It's not normal. No one worth listening to ever said it was. Please don't pass it on by lumping all women together as terrible humans. You're just spreading the abuse around.

If any 5 of these are the case, your opinion should probably be ignored.
If you and the people among the feminist movement are truly egalitarian, then why not call yourself egalitarianists. The benefits are three fold:

It's a good rule of thumb that if you ever use violence for any reason, you're a subhuman and should be removed. Gender or sex is irrelevant.

Why on earth would anyone think that women consider this normal behavior? I'm sorry if you are abused. It's not normal. No one worth listening to ever said it was. Please don't pass it on by lumping all women together as terrible humans. You're just spreading the abuse around.
