Here's why the results are so anomalous.

edit: to make it clear; they only sampled 23 men and 30 women in the age range of 18-22.

edit2: it should be noted that I just got someone to check the 2018 GSS data, and only 88 people ages 18-22 (male and female combined) were surveyed then, which doesn't seem much better to me.

Unfortunately, the article doesn't mean much. You've asked elsewhere why this individual year hasn't received as much traction as the previous data. Firstly, data that shows the same question being asked over multiple years is going to show trends much better than data that only shows a single year. The 2018 data from the general social survey tracked consistent trends over a number of years, it did not suddenly lurch up or down in a small timespan.

Secondly, this year is anomalous, let me be clear what I mean by this. Not only has covid changed behaviour from normal, but it also motivates people to lie about what they were doing. Admitting to having casual sex throughout the year 2021 could imply breaking covid restrictions, particularly in specific age ranges, and because lying on self-reported questionnaires is easy to do and a major problem with the measurement method, this is unreliable data to build an argument on.

It’s clear why imo - women are on average more risk averse than men, which likely results in a slower transition from a COVID dominated and locked down world.

Most men will be taking all their chances they can get while many women will opt for precaution over short term flings for the time being.

Lots of my friends haven't had sex in years, some of my older friends haven't had sex in decades. The pandemic certainly didn't help in that regard.

Then I have some friends that have a rotation of dudes that they sleep with regularly.

Then there are the friends clearly getting laid in a relationship.

The data over time seem to vary widely. People in this post are calling into question the sample size, so I’m not sure how reliable the data are. I do think that there are several “trends” that most data show, though.

The average young man is still having sex. Likely in relationships mostly, and rarely with casual sex. The young men not having sex are a below average cohort, even if they might think that they are “average”.
It is difficult for many young men to have sex. However, as men get older, such as by their late 20s, it becomes much more easier for them. Whether it just takes them longer to figure out women, or whether it’s because formerly promiscuous women finally want to settle down, or whether it’s because they are dating younger women and “taking” them from the younger men is not really known.
Women are more likely to choose voluntary celibacy the older they get. The gap in the sexless rate of women and men narrows and I believe that there is eventually a higher sexless percentage of women than men.

I haven’t had the opportunity to pore over the data, but I wouldn’t start to automatically think that things are suddenly much better for the youngest cohort of below average men.

Also, I’m not sure when the survey was done, but COVID may be playing a part of this. Women were more likely to be cautious during outbreaks than men. It does not mean that the trend won’t return back to normal when outbreaks have subsided.

Unlike previous articles where a trend indicated men were slightly more sexless than women between ages 18-30, this data shows that when accounting for 18-35 range, women win the sexlessness cup.

It's young men who are sexless. The older men get and the closer women get to the wall, the more sex men have. I don't see how this skews any of the assertions.

Finally, 2020-2021 are unique as years due to the covid situation. I don't think there is any conclusion we can draw based on stats from these two years alone.

You cannot draw "dating older men" conclusion from this.

Young women having sex might on average have more sex partners than young men. (the most likely scenario)

All that even if the sample size wasn't laughably small.

I didn't look at any of the links you posted, but even if they are having less sex (highly doubtful, but I'll take your word for it for the sake of my post), they could be having sex if they wanted. The bolded is the crucial point. It's never been easier for women to get their needs met, and usually by good looking men too. Women not having sex = choice. Men not having sex = forced upon them.

You can't take one year out of 20+ and make a conclusion, you can't even make predictions based on one year's data. Social cahenge plays out on the long term, in decades mostly... It happened before that women had less sex then men, but is/was that the rule or the exception? Look at the trend, what does it show?

Besides... As others said, the definition of "having sex" is sometimes not as obvious as it seems like. Like, people say they didn't have sex, because there was no penetration..

Sorry but purely logically that can't be true:

women tend to fuck older people and as example in the US it's illegal for man over 18 to fuck women under 18 so I would not expect there much 18 year old buys fucking million of 15 year old girls, and if so then this would be a trickery with the age ranges.
on the upper hand the 35 year olds will fuck mostly not 35 year old guys they fuck 38-70 year old man, so there again you get numbers on the female side but not on the male side in that age range.
Even if we ignore that women date on average older men, and we assume for a moment 100% hetero sexuality, you would expect that for every sex you have 1 male and 1 female that had sex so you would end with even numbers, except you have very few women that have thousends of guys and other women that have no guys but on average that would still be the same, at least refering to the head line.
Because women are less binary with their sexuality, you have a huge amount of bi-sexuals on the female side while very very few man are bi-sexual, according to 1 study you could even go so far to say that all women that are not real lesbians are bi-sexual. So if you have more female and female sex and if we count that as sex, then you have more sex on the female side than on the male side.
Even if it somehow would be true, if a average women that has extremely easy access has to nonstop shout at man to stop hitting on them chooses to not have sex, is that really sexlessness? that's like calling somebody homeless that has 10 huge appartments around the world but chooses to sleep on the street, I would call that more a camper or something alike.

Between 2000-2002 and 2016-2018, the proportion of 18- to 24-year-old individuals who reported having had no sexual activity in the past year increased among men (18.9% vs 30.9%; age-adjusted odds ratio [aOR] for trend across survey periods, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.04-1.39) but not among women (15.1% vs 19.1%; aOR for trend, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.89-1.18).

In this study the sample size is larger and it shows that men's rate os sexlessness went up to 30.9% vs women's 19.1%, which is a 10%. More than your graph up there.

I think this could be the case because of hyper-promiscuous women. I've known women who will pretty much fuck anything and there's never shortage of guys looking to fuck. These women can't form emotional bonds so they just fuck it out instead.

The more uglier the woman, the more validation she craves and desires. This is why some of the easiest women are usually the type men don't want to touch unless they're drunk or desperate.
