I wouldn't trust some private dating app to not sell my private information to other private companies. This just screams "no". if you're that paranoid about online dating that you support this, literally don't date online. And this isn't any more safe than real life either. Someone can also lie to you about themselves in real life too or they can also provide false information using fake ids so how is this any safer lmfao.

So there is absolutely nothing in there about marital status. It is specifically about monetary fraud, making a false profile to get money from another user. With that said, the requirement for a government ID would not solve the issue of fraud. All it would do is make people use their real information when creating an account, they can still lie to get money, they just can't falsely claim to a woman or whatever. It doesn't make it any easier to find legal recourse either, it just makes a requirement that if a profile is found to be fraudulently taking money that other users be made aware.

In short, it is an immensely onerous requirement that doesn't address the issue of bad actors on dating sites. Also, the requirements of advisory warnings will get absolutely crushed by tech companies. No company is going to allow for a law that requires government ID on online profiles and requires the companies running those sites to give several warnings about how dangerous their product is. They will fight tooth and nail.

Public support will be minimal I expect because again, even people using these sites don't want that crap. An average user will be more concerned about the company or hackers gaining information from their ID rather than other people on the service lying.

I think government should largely stay out of direct intervention in the commercial apps business and instead run a government app alongside the commercial apps that does things the way the government thinks best. The government app should know you by your government name and if you want to use a pseudonym you should be allowed but the app should label it as a pseudonym so the people who read your profile know. Maybe marital status should be dealt with the same way...you don't have to say you are divorced but if you block that info people will know you blocked that info. Use any apps you like...the purpose of the government app is to provide the option of a service less centred around profit and more centred around creating good matches and helping the RMP clear

I don’t hate the idea, though the marriage rule is def wrong - like yes, cheating and lying about your marital status is wrong, but we shouldn’t let the government decide whether people should or shouldn’t be allowed to cheat for this.

As for requiring the ID, it is important as people can falsify their identity and claim to be someone else, which would put others in actual danger - you could use someone’s images and name to ruin their reputation as well, and it prevents minors from coming in pretending to be 18. So it is preventative against potential identity theft, minors using the apps and people targeting others with these apps - so this is a rule that I don’t mind.

Plus, if this results in less people using dating apps, i’ll consider it a victory

This bill is about financial fraud where someone takes advantage of a wealthy person for financial gain.

And the bill is just about how dating sites who are informed of fraud and have removed a perpetrator, that they need to alert others who were in contact with the person of potential fraud.

It has nothing to do with any other untruths or lies. Plus it's virtual signaling by CA since it relies upon the dating website to ban the fraud member and alert all who were in contact with them.
