I am 100% in agreement with you on this issue. Women absolutely should be required by law to sign up for the selective service. That being said, the selective service is a political stunt that has no backbone in regards to a national military draft. I may take some flak here for this opinion, but it ain’t gonna happen. If you consider the sheer weight of numbers consisting of the active duty military forces, the reserve components, the individual state guards, and the overwhelming veteran presence from the past 19 years, you have approximately 2.5 million or so warm bodies to throw at the maw of whatever conflict has risen to necessity. If by some chance, all of those factors have been negated and we are at the point of considering reinstating the national military draft, we have severely screwed up both politically and militarily speaking. The end of the nation is probably about a week away at that point and the last thing a bunch of average citizens are going to do is report for cannon fodder duty.

Fun fact; if you enlist into the Armed Forces directly after highschool you are still liable to sign up for the draft, even though you won't be drafted. You can still face all the same penalties while you are in the military for not signing up.

I agree, it's unfair. The whole industrial military complex is a system that is oppressive on a grand scale. Oppressive towards everyone, but even more so, towards men that do or do not serve. Being a conscientious objector means objecting to all of it. Which includes tearing up that card.

As a child, one of my biggest fears of turning 18 was being drafted. I myself don’t believe in it, and because I was male, I had the fear of government drafting me go to war. While women don’t have the pressure in serving, and/or needing to earn enough income to provide for the entire family. Men have to think about all of it. That’s why suicide of men is so high. I did some research into the legal issues surrounding the US draft a while ago -- purely out of academic interest since we don't have a military draft anymore in my country -- and I discovered that being a conscientious objector in the US actually doesn't work if you are objecting for secular/humanist reasons. The law states that the objection is only recognized in the case of a "strong moral or religious conviction against killing", and does not apply if the person thinks the war is unjust, or states they can only kill another person in a clear act of self-defense, or similar positions. So unless you demonstrate an established pattern of strict religious adherence, you're going to be court martialed for refusing to fight if you try to make this claim. And even if you meet the extensive criteria and the status of conscientious objector is actually granted, you're still going to be put in harm's way, by serving in a non-combat role that is almost as likely to get you killed anyway.

So for those apologists who claim men can just be conscientious objectors and therefore they aren't in any way oppressed or victims of blatant and harmful sexism, well, that's just bullshit. In every way conceivable way, it's pure, reeking, and rancid bullshit.

Lastly, the truly sobering realization in all of this is that even if a country doesn't have a draft on the books, a new law will be implemented faster than you can say "double standards" once a significant threat presents itself. And even if all the stars align and a country is somehow enlightened enough to not send waves of disposable men off to their deaths, once invaders are approaching over the horizon, who is going to stand behind whom? Will women and children hide behind men for protection, or will it be fine if men push women in front of them to take the first bullet? Yeah...I thought so.

The reality is that the draft exists everywhere for men -- whether it's currently on the books or not -- and don't kid yourselves by thinking otherwise.

I remember when they had this in Germany. I live here but come from a country where National Service has long been discontinued.

I could never convince a single person, male or female, that this is wrong - that said, Germans don't take kindly to any criticism by foreigners of their customs.

To become a conscientious objector you had to go to an interview board and defend yourself.

The usual line of questioning once the insults to ones manliness etc were fended off was: The Russians (never Americans) are invading - would you not protect your Sister / Mother / Granny / girlfriend from these terrible men? This was your final hurdle - to deny this noble impulse.

Germany gave up drafting some years ago.

The old alternative program of civil service for 18 months instead of military service was always open to both sexes, and used to be mostly male.

It has been extended now to include stuff like ecological support work.

Now it's mostly female. This reflects, IMO, apathy on the part of young German men, it's a shame - not only can you make yourself useful, but it'll look good on your cv.

It's no wonder that the German male youth are nowhere to be seen, poor fellows are shamed for a decade for being White, German and Male, a trifecta of sins for which none of them can do anything. Still, at least two of our major political parties lead their agendas with fictitious female issues such as the pay gap.

I avoided doing it for as long as I could. However, my academic scholarship to my local uni required I do so.
I really want nothing to do with what the government, especially not it's war efforts. There's a military base that hires many graduates my of the program I attended, so I'd probably have an easy time finding my job if I was willing to work for them, but I've gone out of my way to avoid jobs associated with them.
Every passing year puts me slightly farther away from putting my life at risk for the whims of those who'll never know I existed but as a number.

Fortunately, the US military denies so many people for service, so they have enough quantity as a whole (retention of specific career fields remains another issue) to be that selective and won't ever conceivably reach a point of doing another draft. I do find it funny, however, that when people started to respond to calls for gender equality in signing up for selective service, that's when femnazis took the stance that no one should have to sign up for the draft. Veteran paratrooper checking in. First, this is a purely symbolic issue. Let me explain. If a massive war broke out and the draft was abolished, do you think Uncle Sam is just going to roll over and give up? No, you're going to war regardless of if a piece of paper says you should or not. Don't kid yourselves about this. If the US needs soldiers, it will get them.

Next, you're an objector. At least you say you are. A lot of people confuse what this is, as it has a very specific definition. Say another person has a gun to your moms head and is threatening to shoot her and has already beaten her to an inch of her life. Do you defend your mom and try to stop them from killing her? Or, do you do nothing and let it happen because violence is so against your beliefs that even in an extreme situation like that you'd be incapable of fulfilling your duty as a soldier? If you won't even in that situation, yes you're an objector. If you would do something, you're not. Generally speaking, the belief has to be ingrained to the point of it being a religious belief you hold above EVERYTHING else. A common example are people who practice Jehovahs Witness as a religion. Most people who say they're a conscientious objector, just don't like the idea of war. However, that's not how the US government defines it, and that's all that will really matter in that situation. Basically, every progressive kid under the age of 25 would probably say the same thing, I'm a conscientious objector, not really knowing what that means. Again, it isn't, I don't like war so I'm not going. If you're an atheist, I can almost guarantee you won't get a CO status. The easiest way is to say you're a practicing member of one of the religions that have anti violence as a main tenant. Otherwise, you'll be looked at like the other 100,000 progressives who say they're CO's, while getting in line to have your head shaved.

I never signed up. Had an issue when I applied for student loans. Wrote a letter to the selective service saying how I dropped out my junior year and never knew I was supposed to sign up. There was nobody who told me and no reason for me to think I had to do it. The excuse was accepted and I got my student loan, got my degree in political science and don't do anything with it. I almost went into the army at 30 but got a pulmonary embolism a week before basic training.

I've come to terms with the idea of the draft.

I don't like it. I don't want it to happen, I don't think anyone does. That said, should our nation be attacked we need people able to defend it and a way to quickly have enough troops to manage that. That's why a draft is necessary.

We need the people in our military to be fit and able. Men trained to their peak can be stronger, faster, and fitter than women trained to their peak so we need the people in our military to be men - women simply can't do the job.

If you are going to be responsible for yourself, you need to be able to protect yourself the best you are able. If you are going to have a family (and you already do, even if you don't have a spouse and children you have parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, or at least whoever raised you and cared about you). Once they can't protect themselves, you can take up that mantle. The same with your community and your nation. Each weight is heavier (albeit less likely) than the previous, but that responsibility is where we find meaning in life.

Women can't do it. Oh, they can say they will try, and they will try, and they will fail, but if it comes to all out war where an enemy army is traversing the land and killing every enemy man, woman, and child they encounter, it will be the men who need to fight back.

I graduated high school in 2002, so my senior year began in September of 2001 and we all know what happened then. At least a third of the men in my graduating class from my high school enlisted, because we were all afraid of an actual draft starting and enlisting generally gets you the better options. It was something we all imagined as a real possibility at that point.

What is the general consensus on this? Are you more opposed to the draft part of it or the fact that it’s only men? I can get behind the latter, but you also have to be careful because a lot of what this sub is is relying on and believing in science i.e. men are generally stronger than women. If that’s true then maybe men are more fit for the job. I also believe that if the time comes where we need to protect our country, that I would step up to save what we value so much here in America so signing up for the draft doesn’t outright bother me. Thoughts?

I respect your decision to be a conscientious objector. That's your right. But saying that you might be "sent to [your] death to secure ideals [you] don't stand for" is a vague and possibly misleading statement. If you don't stand for the ideals of this country then I hope you are actively engaged at least in local political action organizations to make your voice heard and make a difference. If not, leave. There's no point in you being in a country, furthering its economy and political machinations, if you don't stand for its ideals. Or at least be more specific.

It’s an outdated law and you will never be called for service.

Pretty sure nobody signs up for selective service and nobody has been fined or taken to jail.

The draft is over. It’s all volunteers now.

Women are, generally speaking, terrible at fighting. If you have a problem with war or the potential for compulsory service that's fine, but there is an obvious reason we don't draft women.
