at least the men are usually attractive, in that generic sears catalog model way. These movies are clearly made for a female audience, as opposed to a Seth Rogan movie.
I think the “rejecting the flashy city life” trope is really about flattering the audience and showing them an idealized vision of their own modest lives. Reverse class snobbery, etc.
And the guy is an idealized version of someone they could imagine meeting: good-looking, with a modest profession that he works steadily at and takes pride in.
but yeah, they never show the positive sides of the heroine’s life: her accomplishments, her thrilling independence, the friends she’s made along the way, etc. they just show her being harried and lonely and maybe materialistic.

The TLDR of these films is basically a woman can have everything, but nothing is as fulfilling as sacrificing yourself to a man of any standard 🥰
FDS be rolling up to that wedding at the end, smashing through the cake. 'GET IN THE CAR, SIS, WE GOTTA GOOOOO' 👩 👵 👩🦰👩🦱🚗

Can you imagine how empowered every woman would be if we all had all of our friends be just a gang of hardcore FDSers?
[–]DelicateDreamFDS Disciple50 points51 points52 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
My real life friends are like this. Seriously FDS talk is how I thought most woman talked when they were among women they had genuine friendships with and could trust to be honest with...
But then in retrospect I have close family who aren’t like this and I realized I don’t talk that way around other women, not because I don’t consider them friends but because they would get offended and judge me (pains me to say it - but they’re pickmeishas).

Same! My friends are all on relationships and complain nearly everyday about their significant others. I tried to introduce these ideas to them but they just thought I was petty for being single going on 6 years and "purposefully not dating because you don't like to date." 🙄 I just have standards higher than yours maybe? Ugh, I need some new friends who understand!!

Can someone explain why people want to live in NYC? It seems like a fate worse than death, I genuinely can't understand a single appeal.
[–]BabyGotBantzPickmeisha™️50 points51 points52 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
New Yorker here. It means you’ve made it in a sense if you’ve got enough money to live here or if you can thrive here you can make it anywhere. It’s one of the centers of human civilization. Endless restaurants, fashion, entertainment, museums, all kinds of traveling pop up displays. We have the best of everything. Yes it’s crowded, noisy and there’s lots of garbage everywhere but this city is normally bustling. We are dealing with a horrible tragedy right now but New Yorkers are tough and we get through it.
Some of us don’t want to live in the suburbs and we find it boring. I’d find it a fate worse than death to live in a cookie cutter house surrounded by soccer moms and nosey neighbors or out in the country with no culture and nothing to do.
[–]baby--bunnyAt-Risk Pick Me Youth42 points43 points44 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I also find the idea of suburban life hell, but I like the other extreme, my dream isn't to escape to nightlife and museums but to be a weird hermit in a creepy cabin in the middle of the woods making maple syrup

Exactly! Couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m from NJ and lived outside NY too. My entire family works there, lives there or is from there. And it’s an amazing city. There’s a reason Frank Sinatra made a song about NY or Taylor Swift. It’s an amazing city!
I also lived in a rural setting like this post is making fun of. No fashion, people are boring and quiet, not outgoing, cliquish, the men are uglier and usually very sexist in these rural areas. Not sure why anyone would want to live in a rural setting. Unless you want to be living in some dirt road drinking and having to drive 1.5hrs to work... like that’s a rural area for you. If it’s for a house or big yard, you can move outside NY to South Jersey or CT. Like you don’t need to move to Maine or some other rural ass area.

Not gonna lie, it used to be more awesome (especially for young people in the 2000s) especially after 9/11 because party culture was amazing. I’m still there (at the moment I’m quarantining with my parents in NJ) is because I could never get paid as much for how little I do anywhere else ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Also I’d die of boredom in the suburbs

Oh I was just wondering since I’ve wanted to visit. It seems like a very diverse city with lots to do. I’m Canadian but many of my friends are from there, so I thought I might like it.
[–]DelicateDreamFDS Disciple18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
California is a big state. You can live within driving distance to the fun stuff and leave all the headache there when you go home. And I am willing to pay more taxes given our quality of living is higher than many states which pay less. I think maybe a Canadian will understand that idea.
Anyhow cities are a blast when you’re young, single and child free. Post age 30 or so, usually a slower pace and being a bit closer to nature feels better. I’m guessing the movies take this idea and really exploit it. Because it doesn’t mean you wanna leave your high paying job you love for some hillbilly in fucksville. It’s more like you simply wanna have your own home and go on serene hikes instead of clubbing on the weekends.
Edit - I got to add, I suspect the core audience for the lifetime channel are pickmeisha suburban stay at home moms who want to be validated for making a choice to crank kids out and take care of their manchild husband and never explore their own potential outside of these servant roles. They love to hate on “career women” and insinuate that they are unfulfilled.
[–]buffysummerrsFDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Don’t let them tell you it sucks. It’s amazing. There’s TONS to do. Especially in soho and midtown. Brooklyn is amazing too. I mean look up any video talking about why NY is amazing and you’ll get it. I brought someone I know whose never been to NY for the first time and she went crazy at it all. It was during Christmas and the lights and music and just so much. We played Taylor Swifts Welcome to NY as we drove over the bridge. It’s a surreal feeling if you’ve never seen it.
I remember last time I was there just walking around and going into some open house and finding this nook and cranny art museum for no reason. I’ve been to places where someone came around and started giving shots for no reason. My friend and I always go to Japanese places and drink sake. The best clubs I’ve been to. I’ve been to amazing apartments there that only very wealthy people can own and I’ve seen the views, that you’d see in like Instagram.
My ex boyfriends aunt is friends with these millionaires who lived an apartment below Heidie Klum and their views were astounding! Both my brothers work in NYC, cousins, my family is from there and NJ. NYC is amazing. I would sometimes go to the ports and look out at the water during the sunsets. There’s nothing like it. Even if you don’t have money, there’s lots to do. I used to take the ferry boat (it’s free) that goes to Staten Island and back to NY and you get go past the Statue of Liberty. My favorite was taking it at night, you get the view all of Soho (the area with the World Trade Center) from the back, and it’s like a movie. Just walking around is an experience and seeing all the famous buildings.
Also, NY pizza is nothing like anything else. That and NJ boardwalk pizza. My favorites. You can find the weirdest things there (in a good way). Like we were looking for good pizza at night one time after getting in late and we found this underground market called Turnstyle Underground Market with bomb pizza. I got ranch pizza. It’s near Columbus Circle Fountain. Like just walking back up to the streets and you see that near it.
Only downside is the city is so cold during the winter, because the wind whips but that’s any city... Philly, Boston, Hartford.
Also, the layout is so easy. You can learn it in like a day. I take the subway at times, and it’s so easy... all avenues go in order. If you’re uncertain, you can pull out your phone and go on maps and it’ll show you the blue dot of where you are (like most phones on map show) and while you’re moving along you can see where you are, and it’ll just go in order on the speaker. I’m sure lots of people on the NY subreddit can give you more info on traveling there.
Also, unlike many other cities you can say and wear whatever the hell you want and no one cares. I actually dislike videos on YouTube that are like “I walked around in a cowboy outfit in Times Square” Facepalm So fake. People in NYC don’t care, especially Times Square. The weirdest of people go there. You can legit go anywhere on the streets and scream “AAHHHHHH fuck you all!!!!” And no one will blink an eye or look at you unless they’re a tourist.
If you want to be ignored and not have eyes all over you, then NY is the place to go. Living in a rural area for a while, I HATE people who stare (it happened in New England so much and it’s so rude). There’s too many people in NY that you go by at all hours that your brain can’t take in all the faces and thus that’s why people don’t stare at you and also everyone has a place to go and things to do they don’t have time. Also in NJ, NY or Philly it’s rude to stare, that’s how I grew up. Rural New England never got the memo it seems. Bored people stare. Even if you’re bored in NY you can walk around and there’s always something (not during the quarantine right now obviously).

Whoa whoa whoa. I’m from NJ and NY and it’s one of the greatest cities on earth. I mean people come to America to see NYC. So many things to do there, at all hours, tons of different people to meet, the pizza is bomb! Also, careers!!!!! My brother works making commercials in Manhattan and his place is owned by Instagram. You’re not gonna find that unless you’re in Cali. I also have a slight NY accent and I love the accents.
I love the attitudes. People aren’t mean like you think. I’ve actually met more mean people when I lived in a rural area, especially the guys! Guys are SUPER mean and close minded and sexist in rural areas. In NY guys were nicer to me, actually knew how to date and kept themselves nice. Like I’d go around and all the guys I knew in NYC looked like they came from Instagram. All the stupid rural ass people I still know in the northeast I lived in all dress like slobs and they look like they stepped out of 2005. It’s like they don’t even care or fucking try. Most New Yorkers I met/friends with try. My brother tries, he dresses to the nines. All his New Yorker friends do.
Listen to Taylor Swifts “Welcome to New York” song. That song FEELS like NY and you’ll get why it’s great. My favorite part of NY is when it starts to get dark and all the lights come on.
I also love crowds personally. I lived in one one of those Christmas towns in the northeast that this post is making fun of, Ive also lived on the beachside in Florida, NJ and nothing ... absolutely NOTHING compares to NY. If you didn’t grow up in the north or near a city you’re not gonna like it. I grew up near Philly too so I like the busy life, I like the people, I like the food! Rural states/towns don’t have a snowballs chance of comparing. I’ve seen and lived both sides. I know.

Not sure why someone downvoted you. People are jealous, IMO. I’m a fellow Jersey person with NY relatives and siblings who work/live there, etc. To live comfortably in NY are most people’s dream among what like living in Beverly Hills or San Diego (I have family out there too) or near a beach in a tropical area. The fast paced lifestyle, the lights, the events, the people, the art, the food. It’s so much to take in. I love shows! I’m an artsy person at heart and I appreciate it all. There’s nothing like New York. You can go to London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris, etc. But there’s only 1 New York. It’s special. Maybe I’m biased. I probably am. But I think there’s something about NYC other cities can’t touch.
I know someone from Boston who tried to tell me NYC is boring and gross. Like what???? One of the greatest cities on earth boring? Uhhh. How is that even possible? I’ve been to Boston like 194738262 times and it’s NOTHING like NYC (no shit). Boston is like a small (cleaner) version of Philly (but Philly is where the cheesesteaks are, so it’s better). And to me Boston is on the same scale as say Atlanta or Pittsburg, population and size. I think this is just overall jealousy. All of it. Like my cousin grew up near L.A. and she loves NYC. Maybe it takes a certain personality to appreciate it. To me dissing on NYC is like dissing London. How can you diss London? It’s fucking London.
[–]buffysummerrsFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Once in a while I’ll see someone from Boston hang around in NY or NJ with their New England sport teams hats on and of course they don’t know how to cross the roads and jay walk (there’s this law in New England where cars have to stop for you and thus they are allowed to cross the road as a car is approaching. It’s very dangerous and they abuse it badly and because of that they think this applies everywhere. Eyeroll. My father constantly made fun of it.) You can also tell who they are if they stare. New Englanders stare a lot. My parents said it has to do with the Irish culture up there. It’s rude and growing up near Philly that was a BIG no no. I also think it comes from boredom. It’s boring out there. Like in NY/North Jersey there’s always something to do and like you don’t have time to sit there and stare at people like a weirdo.
Also, Boston people like Chicago style pizza from what I figured out by everyone I met out there and call cheesesteaks “steak and cheese” like morons. I lived up there for a few years in a rural area. Ugh, hence why I still know a few Boston/MA people. And when they diss NYC I either tell them they have no idea what they’re talking about or I call them jealous and they stop. I know I sound like a dick, but after constantly hearing them diss NJ and NY for those few years I lived there, I couldn’t careless if I offend them. I got a sour taste in my mouth from the locals. They are ignorant from what I learned. At least I grew up eating good pizza and know what a boardwalk is.
[–]heliodromeFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You’re never alone. It’s an energizing city and it wards off depression. If I’m in the burbs by myself in my car by myself, it really makes me lonely. When I hop on the subway in the city , I can people watch, when I walk on the sidewalk, no one is wondering what I’m doing there. Walking is one of the best things about New York. I know there are people around me doing all kinds of interesting things all the time. There will always be an abundance of things to get involved in, classes to take, friends to see.

(there was one that actually broke the lifetime/hallmark mold recently! with a helicopter pilot and a chocolatier but i forget the name)
i usually dislike movies and books like this. it's always the woman who is shown her lifestyle and thinking is wrong and backwards so she then compromises or flat-out gives up her hard-earned accomplishments along with her former life because it was making her so deeply unhappy--that is, until she reunites with her rugged abercrombie and fitch poster boy ex-high school boyfriend who stayed to work for his family's business and helps her realize what she was missing all along (🙄). but on the other hand, it's slim pickings regarding romantic films. we never really have a happy ending without a sacrifice or catch.

Eh these are not the worst. The worst movies/TV shows are the teen stuffs where the girl drops a Ivy League uni (usually Harvard or Yale) to follow her shitty high-school boyfriend to his no-name state university and it's framed as the ~deepest proof of love~ and not a girl literally throwing away a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a relationship that may or may not work out.
Sadly, because of this trope, so many women got brainwashed into thinking that giving up on prime education for their school sweetheart is the most romantic thing to do. I have a pickme acquaintance who confessed to have rejected a good college for a bad college just to stay near her boyfriend... Who dumped her 4 months later. 🤡🤡🤡
At least the woman who ditch her top job in NY for ~love~ has a chance to get another good job back if things don't work but college choices stick with you for the rest of your life.
Also I hate how it's never the shitty boyfriend that pick a job/education to be near his gf when it would actually makes sense since she has the best job/college choices. But no! Just like I have never seen any fictional work where the man leaves his top job/education option for love lol Somehow, he manages to get both!

Oh god that irks me so much. I immediately thought of Topanga and Cory when reading this comment. Textbook pickmeisha drops Yale and proposes(!) to underwhelming below average guy during graduation. What kind of toxic garbage ideas were they trying to teach girls?! You can never know or control whether your love interest will stick with you, always feel the same way, or help feed you and potential babies with garbage degrees and careers that now both of you have. Dropping your dream career path and prestigious degree that you can have control over, and will keep for the rest of your life, for some fickle guy that could turn abusive, weigh you down or leave you in few months is such a bad message. If they really loved you they wouldn't hold back your dreams, independence and earning potential. Why do strong exceptional women always accommodate weak guys' needs, and never the other way around, it's so toxic.

The only one I can think of where this is even considered is Always and Forever, Lara Jean. It’s the third book is the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” series by Jenny Han.
Peter gets into UVA and Lara Jean doesn’t. She gets accepted to William & Mary and UNC (which are both still great schools). She decides to go to UNC and he wants to transfer, but his mom steps in and basically tells Lara Jean she’s ruining her son’s life.

Oh, also in Weeds when the teenage girl going to Yale gets knocked up by douche-boy son who purposefully compromised a condom, parents get her an abortion and lock her down and send her away.

[–]applestormFDS Newbie27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Nope. I'm from France and we both went through 2 years of prep school to pass a difficult competitive exam for selective business and engineering schools. Once you refuse a school, it's over. And she already enrolled to the shitty school and paid part of her yearly non-refundable tuition by the time her NVM boyfriend dumped her soooo. Basically she played herself and hasn't learned anything from that because she recently ditched a job opportunity to stay in the same city as her boyfriend... Who dumped her not long after.
Some people are just too dense.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
NOOOOOOOOO, your friend went through prépas and got into a grande école and turned it down for a boyfriend????? What??
What school did she turn down? Sciences Po, ENS...? I'm afraid to ask...
Anybody reading this should know the entire college application process in France is insane and makes applying in the US look like a walk in the park.

I have a pickme acquaintance who confessed to have rejected a good college for a bad college just to stay near her boyfriend... Who dumped her 4 months later
I did this. I had amazing grades and a standard overachiever's resume, but my boyfriend was... not even able to graduate on time. He failed classes in his senior year of high school and did an extra semester. I stayed home to be with him because I thought that was it for me. I wish I had known my worth. I had a couple of school officials mention that my grades were never seen before and probably the best in the province, but it never dawned on me to do anything other than stay to support my boyfriend. I never thought "oh easy, I can go somewhere better and find a better guy, yag", I just thought "I could never do that, it would be so hurtful to my boyfriend to acknowledge that he's not worth as much as other guys".
I guess being humble and loyal was prized so people approved of my choice. A lot of people think happiness and love are more important than money and achievements. But the love you feel at 18 is so replaceable... I could have loved any guy the same way I'm sure. And if anything it was more guilt and obligation that kept me with him. Feeling obligated to return a guy's affection, then feeling guilty at the thought of wanting to find someone better, then this guilt and obligation making you loyal. I don't think I ever "wanted" him, but he wanted me and I felt like I had to honor that.
I was honestly bored at the local university. It's not a bad university at all, but I was the best student in any class and it just sucked... It didn't bother me being the best student in my high school, but I guess I had expectations that university would be harder, and then it wasn't. If anything the students at the university were on average worse than the students at my high school because I went to the best high school in the region that feeds that university. I would have liked to go somewhere where I was the dumbest around because that's how you grow.

These "runs to the country to be a wife" movies are the conservative equivalent of the "runs away to Hollywood to become a star" movies. Give up the big sinful city to live a simple life with Jesus and family values. Its why people were so upset about hallmark showing a lesbian couple in some ad, because they see hallmark as their safe place.

Lmao! I always make fun of these movies.
But it’s more like.....
Girl lives in NYC. She broke up with her UGLY ass fiancé.
Goes to Vermont for Christmas.
See’s this absolutely 10/10 hot guy in a bakery or bookstore that in reality DOES not actually exist in Vermont.
Hot guy likes her.
She’s too “prideful” or “shy” to get with him OR she’s still obsessed over the ugly ass fiancé.
Hot guy and girl almost kiss, but ugly ass fiancé comes around the corner
“Kate! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Your parents said you’d be in this part of town. I drove 4 hours just to see you. Whose this guy?”
She looks at hot guy with this perplexed and sorrowful look. “I’m sorry....” she says.
She takes her hand away from hot guy to greet ugly ass fiancé.
She stays with ugly ass fiancé at her parents thinking everything is going to be perfect the way she always dreamt.
Something bad happens like she finds out ugly ass fiancé cheated or he says something really offending to her and doesn’t understand why she’s upset.
“Oh why do you need that yoga place, Kate. We’re rich fucks in NYC. I work at a law firm. I make more than plenty for the two of us.”
“You just don’t get me, do you ugly ass fiancé!? You never understood me. That’s the reason I came to Vermont!”
Something happens off screen. We see hot guy look around at the town event and here Kate comes back into to his arms. He never asks a word, they just kiss.
Then something crazy at the event happens and everyone cheers or the snow falls.
I laugh about this every single time these movies come on.

There’s no better indicator that a man wrote those shitty movies. LVM don’t want to feel guilty for being parasitic, so they try to convince themselves (and others) that they add something to a woman’s life.
[–]PooPooMeeksFDS Newbie15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The thing is, we women have to have a “safety net” when these guys leave us high and dry, or fuck up our lives. Lifetime sure didn’t have an “after show” for this movie, showing the “dreamboat syrup man” cheating on his love “Miss lonely businesswoman” with the sexy and sultry neighborhood “Candlestick Maker,” or depleting his newfound love’s savings account after buttering her up to pay off his late child support payments, LOL...And they wonder why a lot of us become bitter! 😡

[–]Reachingout365FDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's so bad too cause we are all brainwashed on this. I was all "miss independent 21-24 but then got re-traumatized and now I'm regressing back into thinking I need to be in a relationship to feel special/good; I wish we weren't on lock down so I could get help lol I can't see my shrink.
It is not good to condition women to feel that their success or life has no value without a man, i am finding I enjoy films more and more that just center women and don't focus on relationships. That is so shoved in our face everywhere and it doesn't even reflect reality cause most men are shit and I think this conditions women not to think critically about their relationship because they're obsessed with a fantasy.

Wait, are we watching the same channel? I don't usually agree with the career change, but usually the women in these movies are leaving some rich, good-looking, but ultimately shitty LVM for the admittedly broke HVM who treats her like a princess even though he doesn't have a ton of money. Usually the original guy was cheating, or turned out to kick puppies in his spare time, or whatever, and the other guy turned out to be the better guy all along, even though he bakes cookies for kittens for a living and lives in a tiny house. Or it's the nerdy guy she grew up with and she discovers she should have picked him years ago instead of the studly quarterback.

This aint got nothing on lifetime way back when. I remember growing up my mom would call lifetime (the supposed television for women) the rape channel. During the 90's to early 00's it had nothing but an abundance of movies about rape, pedophilia, being kidnapped and the occasional "reconcile with my cheating husband". Not sure what's on it now though. Seems like TV that is marketed towards women either exploits the violence done to us or has some dumb Disney romance movie.
Television for women made by men.

Hm. I actually disagree. Haven't seen this particular movie, but I do think people (both genders) are happier through meaningful relationships than money (several studies on happiness support this).
The right person is worth giving up lucrative careers for. The issue is we're horrible at identifying the "right person".
[–]SamLikesGoats0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My dad used to work on these as a second camera operator (focus puller). My grandma loves these and was so in awe when he invited her on set. However she drives a mustang and used to be a security guard and is pretty dang tough. Little does she know that all the people working on it are literally just in it for the money. My dad preferred doing commercials bc they were more fun to do. My other grandma who on paper is like a stereotypical grandma at first glance (knits, bakes cookies etc, like a lot of cookies, Christmas cookie baking starts in September, and they all get frozen until she dumps a huge never ending pile of yummyness on a tray) likes breaking bad and action movies. So I guess the point here is that the media that someone consumes does not make the person. However hallmark movies are crap.
