More women opt for sterilization than men it seems. I’ve thought about it myself. Didn’t even consider asking my partner to get a vasectomy. That would be his own decision.

No, it’s more expensive and invasive. A lot of providers won’t perform tubal ligations unless you already have children. It’s just easier to men to get snipped. This is all common knowledge btw.

My dad got a vasectomy after my parents had my brother. Said it lasted like 20 mins and all he felt was pressure. Got up and went about his day after. They have to actually cut you open and put you to sleep when you get a tubal ligation. Comes with a higher possibility of complications.

I’m pregnant with baby #2 and this is it for us and yeah I asked my husband if he would get a vasectomy after this. I feel like I’ve shouldered the entirety of birth control for the two of us for going on two decades already and now he can do it. I don’t want to take birth control long term any more and I dont want to have to go through a surgery that’s more invasive after I just dealt with two pregnancies.

He doesn’t mind. Pregnancy sucks btw be grateful if you’re a man you dont have to go through that and maybe you get to skate by with her just asking you to get snipped when you’re both done with kids!

If I never wanted children I doubt I’d have gotten a tubal but who knows. Maybe I would have switched from the pill to some form of LARC. Vasectomies are easier, less invasive and reversible whereas tubals are not. When you factor that in I don’t think it’s some huge unfair ask if you’re both on the same page about not wanting kids or being done with kids, personally.

It honestly depends. A tubal ligation is invasive surgery that takes 4 weeks to fully recover where as a vasectomy is a minor procedure that may take a few days to recover from.

Not to mention getting a tubal litigation may be hard because a lot of doctors won't perform any kind of surgery that sterilizes women that are considered "child bearing age". Even if it is beneficial to a women's health, i.e getting a hysterectomy to help with endometriosis.

Ultimately if both a man and a woman in a relationship don't want children it is much easier for a man to just get a vasectomy.

The reason a lot of couples opt the v over getting tubes tied is the former is generally easier to reverse if they change their minds.

A vasectomy is a procedure way more easy than a tubal ligation and the recovery is way more faster.

That being said, I’ve been trying to get a a tubal since I was 30 and no doctor has agreed to it, they dont even give me any information on my options because “what if I marry a man who wants kids”.

I assumed I would get a tubal ligation before I considered that my future partner could get a vasectomy. I would rather he get a vasectomy because it seems safer, easier, and less costly, but if he didn’t want one I would still get the tubal ligation.

I'd be willing to get a tubal after having our last child, but if you want to be really sure you don't have any more the safest open is to get both. I'm the result of a tubal that didn't stick.

Sure. There are stories about oopsie pregnancies even after vasectomy or ligation, so to be totally sure it's better both partners to get surgical sterilization. We aren't sure about it, as maybe we'll want to have a kid, plus, these procedures aren't even accessible for us in Russia, but I guess in the future it'll be our way of contraception.

There are some side-effects of ligation though and I wouldn't rely only on it in terms of contraception. It increases risks of ectopic pregnancies and for some still unknown reason one's risks to require hysterotomy in the future. Also even in countries where these procedures are legal and accessible for everyone, women often have far more problems to get ligation than men to get vasectomy. Doctors just don't want to do it and at least in the US they can decline your request.

Don't need it. Not only is it medically unnecessary in my case, but I actually love children. I'm not ready now and may never be, but I won't rule it out. I am "in favor of vasectomy," as you so put it, for silly TERPers who go around thinking they can stick their dick in any woman with no consequences. I'm in favor of vasectomy for men who don't have the ability to be a good father and husband. I, as a woman, don't have that inherent problem to being a wife or mother. I'm just not ready yet and the world is Hella fucked up.

No. Neither are comparable so the question is moot. A vasectomy is reversible. Men get women pregnant so birth control should be just as much of their responsibility and not only on the women. Look up the procedure and you can see how silly this entire post is. Again, neither are comparable.

Yes. I had an endometrial ablation because I don’t want children. This way I can’t get pregnant and don’t have periods and don’t need to take hormonal contraceptives. People who don’t want children should take measure to ensure they don’t. I’m dating a child free man who had a vasectomy at 35.

unless the law changes, most docs only agree if you get "permission from the husband" so... you might have to marry the lady before she can get it done. And even then she has to be over 35...

Yep, Iove my tubal ligation . No more babies that's why I love it. lol Vasectomy is okay if he wants it . I had my tubal done for me right after the baby was pulled out from the C-section. So it was a convenient time for me . They cut ,tied ,and cauterized the tubes . Technically I've already given birth to Three sons , my second son was massive and I couldn't have him naturally. Once you have a C-section you cannot have a natural birth after that. Three children is enough.

I probably do want kids at some point but once I'm done having kids I still probably wouldn't consider tubal ligation. I don't even take the pill, I'm certainly not going to go for full on surgery. It could obviously be fine but every surgery has risks - besides which it's notoriously difficult to get a doctor to agree to it.

I'd never make anyone have a vasectomy either; if they don't want to risk the surgery they shouldn't. I'm happy to just use condoms forever as I've never had an accidental pregnancy yet, so it's really up to my partner on what they prefer there.

If it was a very certain set of circumstances - for instance if I was about to have what I knew to be my last kid and complications meant I was going to have a c-section anyway - I'd probably consider getting them to do it while they're in there as that seems to be an option.

My perspective after I had all the kids I wanted was that I am going to be infertile within a certain timeframe and can easily abort if I do not wish to continue a pregnancy. Also condoms...I don't mind them , they taste bad but keep the bed dry so on balance acceptable. So I was sorted...condoms and fertility awareness to make sure I knew to test if I might be preggers. So I was not going to ever get a ligation unless I had to go in surgically for some other reason.

My ex partner's opinion on vasectomies was therefore up to him...I approve heartily of vasectomies because they seem quick easy and available, but I also approve of not having unwanted medical procedures. If he disapproved of condoms it was up to him to get snipped. He did not. But I suspect he kind of wanted one more kid so whatever.

Nah, recovery from a tubal is ROUGH and there are other options that work nearly as well. I don't react poorly to hormonal BC and have no reason to switch methods. If that weren't the case I might consider it.

My only friend with a tubal got one because she can't take any type of hormonal BC at all. Recovery took a solid month and she needed someone to look after her for the first 5 days or so.

It's pretty common to do the tubal immediately after giving birth because you can get the recovery all over with at once but I want precisely 0 children, so that's not an option.

Yes, absolutely. In fact I'd go even farther and get a bi-salpingectomy(removal of the entire tube on each side) tomorrow if I could find a damn doctor willing to do it, but between their personal beliefs getting in the way and their fear of getting sued, no dice so far.

I don't want kids because I don't like them, but I'm also tokophobic. Pregnancy is horrifying, and the fact that other women willingly go through it baffles me. A vasectomy just isn't reliable enough in my eyes, they can fail, regularly having your sperm levels checked is a must to make sure things haven't reattached on their own.

You have a better chance of getting pregnant practicing celibacy than you do with a bisalp, and that sounds like heaven to me. no chance of regrowth, either, once they're gone, they're gone. Removing one of my greatest fears from the list of possibilities? Hell yes!

tubal is minimally invasive (& outpatient!) as far as surgery goes. vasectomy is even more minimal but men are pansies, they can’t take pain. if you don’t want kids, take it upon yourself to ensure you don’t and can’t. had a tubal, no regerts. some pain from gas but it’s not as bad as the pain i get on a monthly (even tho i’m always thankful that she comes)
