It's because most men don't receive compliments, affection or attention ever, and the ones that do don't even scratch the level of attention the average woman gets. So even a random smile is embedded into their soul for a long period of time. I find it to be an exceptionally cruel situation where people feign interest in you to effectively have an easier life with more perks at work.

The actual best complement I ever got was from a German guy who watched me and the commis chef cooking on a very busy night in an open kitchen and as they left he came up to me and said ‘You’d make a good German’. I think that will take some beating.

This really hits home. I've had female friends for ages, but we don't "compliment" each other randomly on our circle of friends. For Finnish people that's pretty normal tho. We spend time together some times, laugh, play games... Pretty normal friendship stuff. Outside of my biological family, (and my girlfriend) I've not received that many compliments.

But... Few years back when I was about to leave for deployment in middle-east for a year and we were having my send-off party, I received a notebook for my friends which had a picture for each of them and nice things like how we met, memories together and stuff. It was enough to reduce a grown-ass man and soldier into tears. Three of my female friends had also bought a little stuffed monkey character from a childrens book (mr. Nillson from Pippi Longstocking if you are familiar) and made a little BDU's for it with their names written on it. You can bet on it that I remember that rest of my life.

I seem straight, but I also understand the issue about not receiving affection from platonic interactions.

I avoid complementing women because of conditioning to leave them their personal space.

I avoid complimenting guys because of the obvious conditioning that fragile egos taking it wrong would place me at risk of having to awkwardly explain myself due to their homophobic reaction, or fight. I'm ex army, so fighting a homophobe isn't something I'm worried about, but it's just saddening to think some guys still think that way...

So yeah... social awkwardness because a few dicks made normal dicks slink away from being friendly and platonic. I've circumvented it mostly, but life does seem occasionally chilly.

Honest question: Do you guys go outside and interact with people? I've had a lot of luck after moving with finding people very generous with their kindness and very comfortable expressing that.

Is it a generational thing; are younger generations becoming more informed about mental health and how there's actually very little difference in the emotional needs of a man and a woman?

Is it because I'm 18; does time wear us all down? Am I just young and attractive? Obviously not everyone I meet wants to be my bestie, but I find good people are out there.

Idk, but I find it hard to swallow this narrative whole cloth.

Btw: Small acts of kindness meaning a lot doesn't imply rarity. I've experienced a lot of kindness in my life, and I appreciate all of it. Oftentimes, people are kind when life isn't.
