at least the men are usually attractive, in that generic sears catalog model way. These movies are clearly made for a female audience, as opposed to a Seth Rogan movie.

I think the “rejecting the flashy city life” trope is really about flattering the audience and showing them an idealized vision of their own modest lives. Reverse class snobbery, etc.

And the guy is an idealized version of someone they could imagine meeting: good-looking, with a modest profession that he works steadily at and takes pride in.

but yeah, they never show the positive sides of the heroine’s life: her accomplishments, her thrilling independence, the friends she’s made along the way, etc. they just show her being harried and lonely and maybe materialistic.

I think they're stupid AF. Especially lifetime movies. BUT they are so incredulous they are addictive. My boyfriend's evil twin/ foster daughter from hell who seduces husband/ other crazy scenario that would never happen but keeps you glued to the screen. I LIVE for car crash films like this.

How are they marked as romance or comedy genre instead of horror and tragedy? i usually dislike movies and books like this. it's always the woman who is shown her lifestyle and thinking is wrong and backwards so she then compromises or flat-out gives up her hard-earned accomplishments along with her former life because it was making her so deeply unhappy--that is, until she reunites with her rugged abercrombie and fitch poster boy ex-high school boyfriend who stayed to work for his family's business and helps her realize what she was missing all along (🙄). but on the other hand, it's slim pickings regarding romantic films. we never really have a happy ending without a sacrifice or catch.

A girl I knew actually did this irl. She was an intern at a really competitive firm in manhattan and got a full time offer to start work the following year. But she turned it down to move to nebraska to be with her boyfriend after graduating. At the time I thought “aww how sweet” but now...🤢🤢🤢

Eh these are not the worst. The worst movies/TV shows are the teen stuffs where the girl drops a Ivy League uni (usually Harvard or Yale) to follow her shitty high-school boyfriend to his no-name state university and it's framed as the ~deepest proof of love~ and not a girl literally throwing away a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a relationship that may or may not work out.

Sadly, because of this trope, so many women got brainwashed into thinking that giving up on prime education for their school sweetheart is the most romantic thing to do. I have a pickme acquaintance who confessed to have rejected a good college for a bad college just to stay near her boyfriend... Who dumped her 4 months later. 🤡🤡🤡

At least the woman who ditch her top job in NY for ~love~ has a chance to get another good job back if things don't work but college choices stick with you for the rest of your life.

Also I hate how it's never the shitty boyfriend that pick a job/education to be near his gf when it would actually makes sense since she has the best job/college choices. But no! Just like I have never seen any fictional work where the man leaves his top job/education option for love lol Somehow, he manages to get both!

She’s too “prideful” or “shy” to get with him OR she’s still obsessed over the ugly ass fiancé.

Hot guy and girl almost kiss, but ugly ass fiancé comes around the corner

“Kate! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Your parents said you’d be in this part of town. I drove 4 hours just to see you. Whose this guy?”

She looks at hot guy with this perplexed and sorrowful look. “I’m sorry....” she says.

She takes her hand away from hot guy to greet ugly ass fiancé.

She stays with ugly ass fiancé at her parents thinking everything is going to be perfect the way she always dreamt.

Something bad happens like she finds out ugly ass fiancé cheated or he says something really offending to her and doesn’t understand why she’s upset.

“Oh why do you need that yoga place, Kate. We’re rich fucks in NYC. I work at a law firm. I make more than plenty for the two of us.”

“You just don’t get me, do you ugly ass fiancé!? You never understood me. That’s the reason I came to Vermont!”

Something happens off screen. We see hot guy look around at the town event and here Kate comes back into to his arms. He never asks a word, they just kiss.

Then something crazy at the event happens and everyone cheers or the snow falls.

I laugh about this every single time these movies come on.

The thing is, we women have to have a “safety net” when these guys leave us high and dry, or fuck up our lives. Lifetime sure didn’t have an “after show” for this movie, showing the “dreamboat syrup man” cheating on his love “Miss lonely businesswoman” with the sexy and sultry neighborhood “Candlestick Maker,” or depleting his newfound love’s savings account after buttering her up to pay off his late child support payments, LOL...And they wonder why a lot of us become bitter! 😡

It's so bad too cause we are all brainwashed on this. I was all "miss independent 21-24 but then got re-traumatized and now I'm regressing back into thinking I need to be in a relationship to feel special/good; I wish we weren't on lock down so I could get help lol I can't see my shrink.

It is not good to condition women to feel that their success or life has no value without a man, i am finding I enjoy films more and more that just center women and don't focus on relationships. That is so shoved in our face everywhere and it doesn't even reflect reality cause most men are shit and I think this conditions women not to think critically about their relationship because they're obsessed with a fantasy.

I don't usually agree with the career change, but usually the women in these movies are leaving some rich, good-looking, but ultimately shitty LVM for the admittedly broke HVM who treats her like a princess even though he doesn't have a ton of money. Usually the original guy was cheating, or turned out to kick puppies in his spare time, or whatever, and the other guy turned out to be the better guy all along, even though he bakes cookies for kittens for a living and lives in a tiny house. Or it's the nerdy guy she grew up with and she discovers she should have picked him years ago instead of the studly quarterback.

This aint got nothing on lifetime way back when. I remember growing up my mom would call lifetime (the supposed television for women) the rape channel. During the 90's to early 00's it had nothing but an abundance of movies about rape, pedophilia, being kidnapped and the occasional "reconcile with my cheating husband". Not sure what's on it now though. Seems like TV that is marketed towards women either exploits the violence done to us or has some dumb Disney romance movie.

I had a schoolmate like that. She really wanted to be psychologist and got her bachelors degree easily. Than she would have to apply for masters (with only bachelors degree you aren't qualified to do most psychology jobs) but she quit so she could join her boyfriends pyramid scheme.

Hm. I actually disagree. Haven't seen this particular movie, but I do think people (both genders) are happier through meaningful relationships than money (several studies on happiness support this).

The right person is worth giving up lucrative careers for. The issue is we're horrible at identifying the "right person".

My dad used to work on these as a second camera operator (focus puller). My grandma loves these and was so in awe when he invited her on set. However she drives a mustang and used to be a security guard and is pretty dang tough. Little does she know that all the people working on it are literally just in it for the money. My dad preferred doing commercials bc they were more fun to do. My other grandma who on paper is like a stereotypical grandma at first glance (knits, bakes cookies etc, like a lot of cookies, Christmas cookie baking starts in September, and they all get frozen until she dumps a huge never ending pile of yummyness on a tray) likes breaking bad and action movies. So I guess the point here is that the media that someone consumes does not make the person. However hallmark movies are crap.
