I just had the same convo with my brother (he finally realised his best friend smells like a wet dog), it's cause 1) Some just wash with hot water and no soap. 2) Some don't dry their towels properly and have this moldy smell on them. 🤢

Ah yes, the Olfactory Assault. I believe poor diet that contains a lot of grease and dairy really contributes to this smell, and it cannot be washed off because showers do not remove sweat glands. Plus the men who have this smell tend to not wash their sheets, so they're just marinating in it every night.

Building off of this, why is it that so many single males' homes all have the same stench to them? It's like you've said with the stink, musky, sourness. You can always tell when a male lives alone because of this!!

I've had two roommates, the guy that lives in the unit near the front door of my current place, friends, work colleagues, dudes I had dated.... their homes just fuckin' reek!!! It's actually noteworthy when a male's home or apartment doesn't have this nasty odour to it--and the odour has become one of the first "checkpasses" I use when I enter a guy's home. They usually fail that before I have time to see the garbage littered everywhere but the bin, and general disarray they subject themselves to; even if they appear normal and well-adjusted from the outside. YUCK!

Yea, it can be several things including:

They don't wash properly
They put on dirty/stinky/sweaty clothes after showering, so the bacteria just get right back to it.
Poor diet/lifestyle
Some medical conditions
They just do not smell good to you (or possibly anyone)

If a smelly lurking scrote is reading this, you need to use soap AND something to scrub the layers of grime off like a loofah. And don't skip any part of your body. Women smell and feel good because we don't just let dirty soapy water run over our skin. That's nasty. For me hygiene is in the top 3 things I screen for before I meet someone. I casually bring it up and take note of their reaction.

I think in most cases some guys just don't wash properly on a regular basis. Some guys are out of the shower under five minutes - how do you wash your whole body thoroughly, wash your hair and brush your teeth in that time? Just brushing teeth should be almost half that time...

In my experience, some of them have fungal scalp infections. They don't treat it and it always smells. I've never met a man who doesn't use the same towel for 1-2 weeks. I've met very few who brush twice a day, floss etc. Men smell stronger than women anyway. When they don't shower at night, they smell very frowsy by morning.

In some cases this is obviously a hygiene problem or some sort of medical problem (for example excessive sweating), but sometimes a guy smells bad to you even when he just showered because you don’t find him appealing on a biological and hormonal level. Your reaction is telling you that you shouldn’t mate with him because he’s too similar to you. His natural smell might be perfectly fine for other women though.

Contraceptive pills can affect your perception of the guy’s natural smell and you might end up with someone who doesn’t smell ‘right’ when you’re off the pill.

I went on two dates with someone who smelled like stale meat. He was sweaty and gross and clearly didn’t wash or air his clothes. Told him I wasn’t interested, he tried to convince me to give him a chance and told me I didn’t have to wait until I was perfect to be good enough for him. Vomit. Told me to come back to him when I was ready to date him. Arrogant asshole! Then, a couple of weeks later he found a colleague of mine on Tinder and they’re dating. He told her we both just didn’t like each other. No, sweat-pit, you were clingy and unhygienic and I told you I wasn’t interested. They’re both still together a year later and can have each other. Creep.

Us women are conditioned to wash so much. I had Jamaican grandparents and they would scrub me like a dirty pot in a bath twice a day. Talking about how I had to obsessively wash my vulva in a bath full of Dettol disinfectant when I was pre-pubescent. No child needs a bath twice a day. This social conditioning needs to stop, why are we seen as dirty when we are far cleaner than men anyway? Taught that our periods are dirty and being made fun of for having "period knickers/panties". Whenever I come across a smelly person 9/10 it's a man. Men need to step up their personal hygiene.

Hormones can be a big factor too. Some of that might be genetic, some might be from poor diet and lack of exercise.

IMO it's because they don't actually use a wash rag or loofah in the shower. Or they just don't use soap. Add in the unwashed towels, and there you have it.

ETA: I just showered and this post makes me want to shower again. Memories of men who stunk, even slightly, or whose body chemistry I disliked 🤢. Use a damn wash cloth and wash your towels after one use, please...

I had an ex who showered everyday and did laundry regularly but his diet consisted of beer, frozen pizzas, and fast food. He always smelled of beer and vape juice🤢 when I would spend the night at his place, it looked like he lived in a frat house (he was in his mid 20s way past college age). Dishes were piled up, he had a pyramid of empty beer cans on his mantle above the fireplace, he had no water bottles or water filter because he mainly drank sodas and beer, and random pairs of shoes and shirts were strewn across the living and dining rooms. Typing this is cracking me up because this scrote acted like he was still in high school😂

There could be several reasons: Didn't wash properly, drys with old towl, puts on same old, stinky clothes after showering, bad diet or lifestyle as a whole,.... It could also be that you don't have chemistry, that he doesn't smell good to you. Women have a way better sense of smell because they vet for genetic compatibility. Either way if you don't like his smell it's a sign to stay physically away from him.

I think it's a combination of diet and daily habits beyond hygiene. My ex showered and did laundry often but somehow always smelled like what I can only describe as day old McDonald's fries. He only ate meat and bread, no veg, and drank a LOT. He also drank a ton of coffee every day. I don't know how I tolerated it for as long as I did.

It’s not washing clothes.

I lived with someone (not a bf thankfully) who showered every day but did not wash their clothes regularly. And everything smelled.

At first I thought the same thing - why? They shower every day! I hear the shower!

But then I started realizing that I rarely saw them doing laundry, and when they did there was a layer of grime left on the tub. Again the first time I noticed I thought they must have had an unusually heavy load, but then I realized it was the machine trying to deal with weeks of grime.

Our machine broke and I didn’t tell them. It was four weeks before they asked about it.

And they don’t have a large wardrobe. Sometimes they wore the same outfit twice in a week (not judging that, but wearing it 5+ times without washing? Ugh)

And that sort of thing doesn’t wash out. Even when THOSE clothes are freshly laundered they will still stink and they will transfer the stink to the person.

There are some men who just smell so good — don’t know what it is, the soap they use, the cologne, the combination, pheromones?? — it drives me absolutely insane and it doesn’t even have to be someone I’m attracted to. But then sometimes, and oh shit when it is, it is.

It is also often leaving clothes too long in gym bag, in the laundry, or not drying quickly after washing, so it smells damp, musty and sour. Also, I don't like the smell (or taste) of guys that take certain supplements and protein powder.

My ex would literally not wash his legs or feet when he showered bc he claimed that the soapy suds would trickle down from his upper body and wash the lower parts. I could never understand that. When we showered together, I’d sometimes wash his legs. Like wtf was wrong with me for putting up with that nasty shit? It literally takes 10 seconds to scrub your legs and feet.

It's improper cleansing in the shower, a dirty towel, and also buildup on their clothes. If you don't wash your clothes properly, stank gets stuck in the fibers. Then their body heat warms up the clothes and releases the odor.

It can also be from living in an unclean home (especially with pets), or body odor from a junky diet.
