Men are never excused rape under some understanding that they just couldn't help it. What kind of myth making is this?

Rapists are always portrayed as vile monsters, and nobody ever has any sympathy for them.

That is why false rape accusations are so damaging - because of the stigma attached to the idea of being a rapist is enough to ruin someone's reputation and even their life.

Nobody is ever excused rape because "my penis made me do it".

Here's where they lose the thread because what they're saying is that we somehow think black people and men are ruled by criminality or violence but at the same time we give black people and men a pass on being criminal or violent. Both women and white people don't have social narratives that say they 'can't help it', yet when they do engage in violence and criminality they're the first people to get responsibility for it lifted off their shoulders.

Black people are held more culpable for crime then white people. Men are held more culpable for rape then women.

This is bullshit.

The assumption behind this poster is that society excuses men who rape by saying "He couldn't control himself".

I have never seen or heard anyone defending a rapist in that way, but the poster claims this is something common, thereby creating the perception that society is incredibly unjust to women. Isn't this the way that all feminist propaganda works?

I think many of you will disagree with me, but I don't really like this poster. It's a very confusing message, and even when I get to its core, I still can't subscribe to it. It sort of treats sex as a rational enterprise, when it's really not. Sex is an animal thing.

Yes, people are rollercoasters and werewolves, both men and women. Sex is ardent, fervent, and sex can also be a violent and consensual thing. Sure, talking about "controlling yourself" gives the impression that everyone is a potential rapist, and I agree that reason must always dictate what we do, but let's never pretend that sex isn't a powerful inebriating force. I believe that this aspect of our sexual selves fails to be acknowledged in this poster.

Feminists must first understand that the often repeated cliché that says "this isn't about sex, this is about power" makes absolutely no sense. Rape is about sex, all sex is always about power, and that goes for both men and women. Honorable people do not rape, but slut rallys and poster signs do not create honor. Once they understand that it's not men who rape, and that it is rapists who rape, maybe we'll actually be able to start a conversation.

Judging from a lot of these posts, I think a lot of you tend to look at issues from a bit of a sheltered perspective. Most people here are probably young white males. Probably educated, probably come from a comfortable background, probably atheist/agnostic. I'm obviously generalizing quite a bit, no need to point that out to me. However, I think you all have to take that into account when you say things like, "Ugh, nobody actually thinks that men can't control themselves, RARR GRR FEMINISTS." The plain fact is that lots of people think that. Your peer group of 18-34 y.o. middle class white non-religious educated people generally holds more liberal views about these things, but your peer group is not everyone. If you go to a small rural town in the South or Midwest, people might very well think that way. If you talk to Latinos or Asians or Muslims or just about any group, you would probably hear very different views on rape.

Hell, even in my educated, affluent suburb, I don't know a single rape victim who hasn't been told by SOMEBODY in her life, be it parents or friends or police or boyfriends, that it was her fault because men can't control themselves and she should've been more careful. I read a poll a year or two back that said that 42% of Australians thought it was the rape victim's fault if she was showing too much skin or dancing suggestively. Wish I could remember specifics so you all could double-check me, hopefully someone can find it anyways.

Honestly, I think one of my biggest problems with this subreddit is that, when confronted with an issue that women face, you all insist that "nobody thinks that way anymore" outside of the third world. Women have rights now! Show's over, time to focus on men's rights! But it's really not like that. Men and women both have a really long way to go in society before these become historical issues, right now they're very much current problems.

Choosing to not work full time

Choosing to not work at all

Choosing to leave the workforce periodically or early.

Choosing to not pursue promotions/raises.

Choosing to lie about abuse.

Choosing to divorce someone, severing access to their assets.

Choosing to compromise themselves by drinking and putting themselves in compromising situations.

Choosing to initiate violence, and any defensive response that follows.

TL;DR: Choosing anything that comes with a tradeoff or impacts the lives of someone else directly.

Here's the problem : Very few people simply say "Want to screw ?" to somebody they're attracted to and even fewer still are successful . So what does that mean ? It means we use non-verbal communication to initiate sex ... at least the first time we have sex with somebody .

An unbuttoned blouse here ... a dropped pen there ... an innocent game of fully-clothed rodeo . We all know how it goes .

Now , we all know that men make the most obvious advances and shoulder the risk of actually putting forth the question initially . Supposedly women actually do more but if that's true , it's not because they're consciously aware of it . The men certainly aren't anyway .

Anyway , what does all of that have to do with this subject ? Well , if you can't ask a random woman if she'd mind bending over for your pleasure , you're pretty much stuck looking for those non-verbal cues that she's got sex on the mind . If she's wearing revealing clothing , flirting with you , and doing all those other little things that women do to let us know that she's interested ... well , we interpret them in a logical manner . So : If it walks like a duck , talks like a ducks , and looks like a duck ... it's probably a duck .

Sometimes , yes , it turns out it's not a duck . By no means am I excusing rape but let's be clear about what a rational person considers rape . We think of a man using physical force to subdue a highly uncooperative woman so as to have sex with her . This certainly doesn't include or preclude a myriad other possible scenarios but it's what most people think of when they visualize the crime in question . Either way , we expect that with a genuine rape , the victim is incapacitated or otherwise unable to voice an objection .

If a woman does all those non-verbal things a woman can do to lead a man to the reasonable conclusion that she would like to have sex with him AND then does not clearly verbalize a negative response to his attempts at initiating a thorough rogering ... is that still rape ?
I mean , if she did everything she did to 'tease' him , he finally decided to go for the bait and then she didn't say no in clear terms ... is that actually a rape ? Is that a bait and switch ? Can we even call it a crime if she makes no attempt at all to dissuade him from trying to take his skin boat down to tuna town ? I understand fear-paralysis but shouldn't it at least be incumbent upon the victim to state 'no' ?

I'm not victim blaming , I'm asking a genuine question . In a situation where one side is too scared to say anything and the other side has interpreted all non-verbal cues exactly as any rational being would ... how do you decide if a crime has even been committed ?

This message is to counter the victim blaming that surrounds rape victims. "She shouldn't wear that" or "She turned him on" are often said. Society doesn't excuse the rapist, that is not what this poster means. It means that when we blame women for being raped, it is assumed that the man had no control. It's sexist against men to treat all men like potential rapists. This poster tries to show that men are not all rapists, they can take decisions.

It's poeple who say that women need to cover themselves otherwise they will get raped. What does it say about men? That we are all raging rapists that only need to see a bit of skin to become monsters.

I read this poster as anti sexist against men. Not the other way around. I am not a walking penis. I will not rape you because you are sexy.

I think when my feminist buddies share these condescending messages about men in the name of 'awareness' they also express their deep-rooted hatred for men. It is easy to make posters as such with.."Women aren't talking vaginas!" but it will be branded as misogyny.

I completely agree with this statement.

There are several types of people saying this, though. And the ones that really piss me off are the ones that say 'women deserve to be raped because they were asking for it', and at the same time say 'she was there asking for it, so he raped her'. It's most problematic, and most difficult to get through to the people who have both of these mentalities.

Just throwing this out there: Let's apply this logic to politics.

Stop criminalizing non-ideal choices--you know not what you do. Prostitution, minimum wage, drug use, ergonomically incorrect chair use. These things are vices, not crimes. While we should discourage with reason participation in these things (if you so believe), punishing people for their choices as if their actions are a trespass are a perversion of the meaning of a law abiding society.
