Lots of people think that these "dress codes", only exist to humiliate and control women. While letting men wear whatever they want.

In reality, its because its usually women who wear provocative and not men. I'm pretty sure if guys started coming to school in clothing that shows their butt-cheeks and stomachs, they would also get dress coded.

I remember when I use to live in the middle east, they use to think ironically that these provocative clothing that women wear in the west is sexist. Because "males" pressure them into wearing provocative clothing for their own enjoyment.

I think that a way to look at this is sexual harassment. In a workplace (and school is like a workplace) if someone feels "harassed" by a risque display then the risque display is harassment and must stop. It's a nauseatingly disingenuous screed. The most salient of the facts which are left unstated is that girls who wear provocative outfits are less likely to concentrate on their own work because they feel too self-conscious about how they look. That is surely a distraction to a woman's education as well. At any rate, not adhering to dress codes is hardly good preparation for the workplace.

Additionally, this obtusely pretends that sexual arousal from someone's appearance "turns them into an object," which is an akin to saying that someone cannot be sexy and a fully-fledged human being at the same time. I have never understood this charge. I can only conclude that "you objectify women" is just how feminists say "you have dirty thoughts of lust." I have never heard anyone explain the difference between "objectification" and "attraction" except to tell me that only a properly-indoctrinated feminist is capable of reaching into your brain, perhaps via Girl Power telepathy, to discern what's going on. Unbeknownst to yourself.

By the way, if there's nothing sexual about what's up a woman's skirt, then I suppose the author wouldn't object to people taking photographs of the innocent, non-sexual items hidden up there. She should be totally OK with that, unless she's full of shite.

Grade 8 here so I feel I may be able to weigh in somewhat significantly.

I dont give a shit what people wear in my class, girls have come to class with their whole stomache showing and I still got my work done and so did everyone else.

They also seem to contradict their own point, first they say no guy cares about a bra strap then procede to say "teach men not to sexualize women" I dont think sexualizing women is bad because its human nature both ways. But if they seriously think guys should take a class to not rape/sexual assualt women then by that logic we teach blacks not to steal and muslims not to blow stuff up. See we would never do that so why generalize men?

Get a good enough GPA, and we have been instructed to let you come to school in a bikini. Get a bad enough GPA, and the islamic studies department has thankfully paid for a truckload of full body burkas. Which you will be forced to wear at all hours while on school grounds, till your grades pick up.

"Just passing" ensures that you have to adhere to the school dresscode. If you want more, we want to see that accademic archievement.

Tbh this whole thing is silly. I can't name a single time a male peer of mine complained about a female peer's chocie of clothes. We made humorous and/or sexual remarks sure, but that was the end of it. Nothing negative, nothing impacting our edumakayshun or whatever.

Also, slut shaming exists for a reason. No man wants to willingly be with a woman who he knows has been around the block numerous times. It's an indicator of a number of things: she is more likely to have STDs, she isn't a good romantic partner given she can't hold down a relationship, she likely has baggage that not many want to deal with... etc. All sad but true things. And I'm not the kind of person to tell women how to live their lives. By all means, do you. But women also must accept that their actions and the way they present themselves will attract a certain kind of attention depending on how they carry themselves through life. It's a thing we all have to learn as we grow up and it's not exclusive to one gender, though the consequences are different for both genders.

And the last part is the silliest of all: undoing thousands of years of evolution over a problem that doesn't exist is completely nonsensical. The only people who care about dress code are administrators, teachers and probably other parents. The adults in the situation are the ones creating a problem out of thin air. If they want to address the sexualization of children then go ahead. Parents will go about it in their own way. But taking it out on kids by forcing them what to wear or disrupting their day over clothes??? Just make them wear damn uniforms if you care that much about what they wear. At least then you'll be teaching them discipline and how to put up with the bullshit of the world and grow thicker skin.

tl;dr Taking girls out of school, teaching boys to go against their own biology and then saying slut shaming is bad is a completely asonyne way to deal with a nonexistent problem. And this is both on the feminists and the schools. Neither one of them has a worthwhile solution. Either the schools shouldn't give a shit about what their students wear or make their students wear uniforms. Is it so hard to be objective and productive anymore?

As an adult, you typically have to have a couple different wardrobe sets. There's business, business casual, evening formal, evening informal (ie., "club" wear) and casual.

To the extent that this is an exercise in training people to dress business/business casual, I'm fine with the dress code. To the extent that it is an intentional effort to "slut it down" by having girls cover up more of their body...meh. The letter is right; spaghetti straps aren't going to be the difference between driving boys wild with lust or not. But then, perhaps schools would benefit from doing what many businesses do: having intermittent business casual/casual wear days so kids get to learn what the cultural bounds of normal are. Sexist or not, it is in the long run a business skill to know how to dress.

The funny thing is that I never really liked school dress codes. The reason i disliked dress codes was because unlike most other places, students are forced to go to public schools and we really had no choice in any of the rules.The excuses were always bad. Boys never cared about what girls wore, besides a passing comment, they really didn't make the school any safer, and the idea that it " promotes unity" was similarly bullshit. To me, their true reason why the implemented dress code was to hide any problems that they had and make themselves look better to investors and other higher authorities (who they usually lied to every time they came) and who would only be there for a few hours. More than enough time for the illusion that they wanted to hold.

My school had major double standards. Girls got sent home regularly for wearing shorts that were to short but the guys would go around the school after athletics wearing nothing but gym shorts and no shirts. I can't tell you how annoying it is to be called out of class for a girl only dress code meeting or to be asked to stand up so someone can look you over. I was a tomboy who mostly dressed in jeans and a t-shirt but I saw many girls be sent home for really small things. I think if you can wear it in public you should be able to wear it in public schools. That being said I saw many guys being called out for their hair being to long or because they didn't shave, I never saw them being sent home though. I guy did get sent home once because he came to school wearing skin tight leather pants and it was very visible that he wasn't wearing any underwear.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm assuming this is for a school that doesn't have a uniform (I didn't have a choice what to wear to school - just the school uniform).
There is nothing wrong with having a dress code that encourages neat attire suited for a school day. Why are strapless tops, tank tops and mini skirts deemed appropriate for a school day? You are there to learn, it's not a fashion parade. I'm all for teaching boys AND girls how to have respectful relationships but that doesn't mean it should be a free for all in terms of what can be worn to school.

A lot of the dress code debate lately has focused on girls being distraction to boys, but I think this is misguided. A dress code is about creating a professional, respectful atmosphere. And contrary to the last line on that flyer, what you wear does dictate the respect you get from others. That is the way the world works. When a high school girl is told she can't have her bra strap showing, it has nothing to do with distracting high school boys (who I'm sure have seen plenty of bra straps), it has to do with the fact that such attire is unprofessional and inappropriate for school. Even single-gender schools have dress codes, where there is no issue of distracting the opposite sex.

What I find very strange and depressing is there is almost zero discussion of why human sexuality operates the way it does. Allow me to present a hypothesis -

Premise 1) Biology is parsimonious. It never wastes energy unnecessarily. Efficiency is a fundamental survival mechism. This is derived a priori. A posteriori evidence confirms this truth.2) From that premise we can derive that humans, as biological creatures, are also subject to the natural law of parsimony. 3) Because reproduction is a biological function it is also subject to the law of parsimony. 4) From that we can logically conclude male arousal, which is an essential condition for human reproduction to happen and the species to continue will operate in the most biogically efficient manner (waste the least of amount of energy unnecessarily seeing as the survival of the species depends upon it!!) Note that Female arousal is not essential. Full stop. Unequivocal. 5) It is self evident that the most efficient and straightforward mechanism for male arousal is for it to be triggered by visual clues. This is human sexuality explained accounting for the biological law of parsiomny, as it must be. 8) Male arousal cannot be explained absent taking the presupposing biological conditions into account. 9) Conclusion - All feminist theories of male sexuality do not take into account these presupposing conditions therefore they are necessarily false including all explanatory hypothesis which claim that males can be taught to the see the female body in a desxualized manner, can consciously regulate arousal to any meaningful degree, and/or are intrinsically capable of desexualizing women but choose not to due to socially constructed unconscious ideological beliefs (PATRIARCHY). If this hypothesis is true it means we don't need to disprove a single claim of feminist theories of male sexuality because they are false on their face. Their starting premises, from which they derive the arguments they use to construct their explanatory model of sexuality, contradict how biology necessarily works.

Why do we almost never talk about the way sexuality is and allow for the debate to be framed inside totally bogus premises from feminists about how they subjectively wish it ought to be? Classic is/ought logical fail. Such a basic error in reasoning it's embarrassing actually.

Here's a theory to ponder.

What if the rules are more for the benefit of the staff instead of the students but are blaming the students so the staff won't get in trouble?

Example: Male staff don't want the distraction and temptations that they have when female students are wearing revealing clothes. And female staff are jealous of not being able to wear the same outfits. So the admin came up with the solution of blaming the male students.

I doubt you will ever see a teenager complaining about a girl wearing any of that... unless it's some kind of ultra religious kid.

Let's face this. Schools that do this don't do it because "distracts men". Schools with such strict codes are usually religious. And it's what they believe. So don't blame men, blame religion.

We are sexual creatures, but we are at school to learn, not attract mates. It just so happens that most of our social interaction happens at school, so people tend to try to look for mates, and therefore dress provocatively.

There's nothing wrong with calling humans sexual objects. It's when we treat people as ONLY sexual objects that it becomes wrong.

For starters I agree to the point on what's guys have never said and that inturupting her education based off the fact her atire only slightly breaks the rules being stupid. However, personal responsibility should be taught to both. Wearing slutty clothes is done for attention and affects BOTH GENDERS.

Even if we take it as not a strawman (though it is one since dress codes are based on upholding the school atmosphere/image rather than boys being distracted), notice how for men the benefit is being "distraction free" yet for women it is "their education". It is an education issue for both the man and the woman, since what would they be distracted from when at school? Most likely the teacher and their work.

And it must be said that men are biologically attracted to female features. It doesn't mean they have to stare and generally they are good at not doing so. But wearing overly revealing clothing (which they know is overly revealing) and not expecting people to stare is like bashing a tamberine and not expecting people to turn their heads around. Or criticising them for doing it. It goes against everything we know about human nature.

Having lived on marine corps bases for several years, we have to follow a dress code on base. No spaghetti straps, flip flops or shorty shorts or leggings unless an appropriate top is worn over it. It's not a big deal. It's not sexist because men aren't allowed to wear those things either. If a marine here wore shorty shorts and a crop top he would get kicked out of public places way faster than a girl would. It's just basic decency, the base has a dress code and you follow it if you want to go out on base .

One time I was in Algebra one, and this girl wore sheer tights under jean shorts. That style has always and will always do something strong for me. I popped a boner super hard and almost left the classroom before the teacher had her change. Pretty distracting.
