How do you have a relationship with someone who was raised much more lax than you were, and deal with co parenting with them?

I am not married but am looking at my dating pool and the young people whose upbringing I would be involved in as a future step parent.

For example some of my male friends parents give them hentai, their mom gave them a playboy subscription when they were underage, or they let their children party and go to strip club /brothels, or the family goes to gun ranges and other things my parents would be disgusted by (my parents consider guns = rated R for violence) and they are allowed to smoke weed and drink at home.

One of them is 60 years old and divorced, smoke weed, works outside of the city where his children live, and he says his 18 yo and 21 year old has their own "food subscriptions". They don't eat together, even for Sunday dinner.

Meanwhile my dad gets tight when I say the word shit accidentally, like a steam valve is building up. He didn't know what weed smell was until it became legal and used to think it was flavored cigarettes.

How do I reconcile my value system with that of my dating pool which contains people who have thousands of hentais at home, possibly have a high body count and have been watching R movies since childhood?

Somehow I think this is still a controversial comment to admit. Make a profile on a dating app you're guaranteed 100+ matches before the day's end.

And that does mess with you and gives you both the freedom and illusion of choice. I know it because when I switch my dating app to a different country and got 100s of matches I said to myself "so this is how the average woman feels"

anyone else is in the purgatory where you have optimized a lot about your physical looks but cannot seem to crack that threshold required to be considered attractive enough for women?

Ive found that if you dont have the immutable qualities (such as height, frame, facial structure), it's incredible hard to hit that threshold even if your fashion/body/grooming are great.

it's your max potential is maybe increasing your looks by 1.5 points.

where a man with the frame/hieght/face can not do his hair, even be skinny, throw on a t shirt and ball cap and be objectively more attractive.

recently in conversation i was asked my thoughts on a tweet about flowers on the first date. my initial response was an enthusiastic yes, bc i love that kind of thing.

but after opening the tweet to see the individual the flowers would be coming from, my answer had to change to “no thanks, no flowers from you” .

now, assuming all options are cute to me, id pick flowers guy over no flowers guy.

but if you don’t pass the threshold, it doesn’t matter to me what cute things you do, doesn’t matter how funny you are. there’s a minimum bar for physical attraction if anything is to proceed after that.

I was talking to one of my subordinates the other night and I was explaining a post from a user here who was speaking like a complete NT NPC to a woman and bagged her despite his lack of social prowess and communication. I explained that if I had tried that with my social acumen I'd still be rejected and possibly labeled a creep (for approaching at the gym, which is where this was at). She flatly tells me that "if you look that good, all you need to fucking say is hey!"

The "women are wonderful" effect in regards to looks is still very much alive. This is what I mean. This guy got banned for this comment, despite it being perfectly polite and not generalizing. But to insinuate that women can be shallow is heresy. In fact, bitterly fighting this notion is a major point of that entire subreddit.

For the first time in about five or so years, I saw a legitimately average dude with a very good-looking woman.

Dude was around 5'8" (still MUCH taller than the chick, she was short), glasses, not a great beard and basic ass hair do. Yet the chick was all over him; you could tell she was the one way more invested than him. He just didn't give a fuck.

First time in half a decade that I've seen this dynamic. 90% of the time I see mismatched looks in couples, the man looks FAAAR more attractive.

I remember refusing to take off my shirt at swimming lessons when I was a kid, because of my embarrassment about my stomach. I think back and I can honestly say there's never been a single moment in my life where I felt good about my body.

I know it's common for people growing up to have insecurities. But I imagine most people eventually do something about it (like start eating right, going to the gym, etc), instead of just giving up like I did. I truly believed I was so unattractive that no woman would ever want me before I was even in my teens.

It just goes to show the prevalence of looks in our society and how much weight they're given (no pun intended).
