Question for women: What is your opinion on circumcising boys? Consider when you have a son for example. Is this something you would want for him? Why or why not? Please discuss

I don't plan on having children, but if I did id certainly not get a child circumcised. I see it as an unnecessary procedure that shouldn't be done without the consent of whoever "owns the penis". In the country I am from that is also not a common practice. Piercing girls ears when they're born is a common practice, and im also against that.

I'm not in a place or culture where men are routinely circumsised, and there's no question that I would not support circumcising my child, or anyone else for that matter (unless there is some medical reason). I don't understand why anyone would do it outside of blindly following convention.

I would never circumcise my sons. I think it’s awful to mutilate them without consent. However if he’s older and makes the decision himself as an adult, I can’t stop him.

I was insistent that hubby and I not get our boys circumcised. If my son wants to be circumcised, he has that option when he's old enough to give informed consent. He can't decide to undo it if I make that decision for him. Not my penis, not my place.

I will not allow it to happen. Children cannot consent to body modification. If he wants to do it after 18 that's his choice. But my body my choice should not just apply to pregnancy

It's too personal of a decision for a parent to make. It can be decided by the child when they are grown.

I know the biggest issue is hygiene, but i'm of the firm opinion that if a girl can be taught to wash herself so can a boy.

I have a son, we did not circumcise and my husband is intact (uncirc) and I’m completely against it, if we want equality then we must be against female and male circumcision. Even for cultural/religious reasons it takes away bodily autonomy. I also am against piercing baby’s ears for that reason too although it’s less bad than circumcision.

I can understand if it’s for medical reasons like a bad infection happens but that’s usually on the parents for not having good hygiene practices. That also happens sometimes when men become elderly at least they’re able to chose that.

I'm not an activist or anything but I think circumcision is pretty fucked up. You're slicing off a part of your newborn baby for literally no reason. Frankly I don't know how any mother could do it. Now that I've had a baby, even if I wanted to I don't think I would have had it in me to hand him off to have that done to him.

My son is not circumcised and it was a bit of a fight with family. My logic won out. All humans deserve and intact body and to make their own body modifications (unless medically necessary before the age they can make their own decisions.) I realize that modern culture really demands circumcised dicks but I couldn’t do that to my kid. Especially knowing the origin(s) of all genital mutilation practices.

Circumcision is child abuse. If a man wants less penis, he can choose that for himself when he’s an adult. There is zero reason to perform cosmetic surgery on the genitals of children. Foreskin is natural, normal, and provides great pleasure to a man and his partners.

I really don't agree with it - however I'm not in the US and it's really not usual here which has probably helped to shape that opinion.

Obviously for medical issues that's fine, but I wouldn't think that would normally present until much later on (I slept with a guy a few times who was circumcised due to phimosis and was telling me about it, but he hadn't known he had an issue until he was 12 or so, getting erections and realising they were really painful).

Genital mutilation. Children must be left intact. They can do whatever they want when they are adults, if its for cosmetic or religious reasons, or can have a medical indicated circumcision if there is a clear medical reason.

I will never make a decision like this for my child and I am definitely against genital mutilation for bith genders. If he needs to do when older for cosmetic or medical reasons he can make this decision.

I am fucking terrified when my baby needs to get blood test or a jab, because the thought of hurting her makes me cry, I would never be able to be cruel enough to agree to cut something off my baby for some superficial reasons. I habe a daughter, but if I had a son I would feel the same.

I think it’s insane and don’t understand why it is even legal to make permanent body modifications to a baby who can’t consent just for cosmetic purposes.

I also totally disagree that it is cosmetically better, so it’s not like everyone had the same tastes as the parents. And as a woman, the foreskin makes sex more comfortable, so it’s just better to have it in all ways as far as I’m concerned. And “hygiene” makes no sense either, no other countries do it and it’s not really that hard to wash a dick, none of my uncircumcised partners have had any issue keeping their dick clean. We don’t cut off baby’s fingertips to keep them from having dirty unmanaged fingernails.

I don’t want kids but if I had a son I wouldn’t have him circumcised. It might be slightly more common and acceptable right now, but I think that’s changing. Plus my family likes to over share so I know my brothers aren’t circumcised and neither are most of my cousins. My current partner and most of the men I’ve been with in the past have been uncut. It just seems more natural with no risk for losing sensation or anything.

I tried to talk to my SIL about not mutilating my nephew. Unfortunately, she cited religious reasons and went for it anyway. She's Christian, not Jewish. Ugh, well anyway, as a proponent of science I can't get behind circumcision. Unless there is a true functional issue, I'm very agaisnt any surgery. Boys can wash their own genitalia. It doesn't have to be mutilated to be clean. In most of the world, uncircumcised men do just fine. Obviously, any son of mine will not be genitally mutilated. Surgery will happen only under very exceptional circumstances. My husband and I have talked about this, though the plan currently is to not have children.

Never done it to my son. Never had a partner with it done either. Here in my country it isn’t the norm. I am glad of that. I think it looks rather odd without it’s skin to cover it.

When I was still active duty, I assisted on a circumcision at a hospital. Despite the EXTREME skill of the doctor, a vein was nicked, and stitches applied. Had the doctor not been wearing a face shield, they would have gotten blood in their eyes. The ENTIRE procedure was done ONLY because of the parents decision. I can't see him being too happy with his parents when they explain to him in about 6-8 years why he has scars on his junk. Can you imagine telling your kid he's mutilated because of a decision YOU made for him?

Yeah, after that, I swore if I ever had a son, this would NEVER EVER happen. Over my dead body.

I’m in the US and all of the men I’ve ever dated have been circumcised. I’ve actually asked them if they wish they hadn’t been and they all agreed that they preferred to be circumcised. And they all want their sons to be also. I think most of the women in the US do leave it up to the fathers.

I think I’d let my husband (assuming I had a husband) choose. The fact of the matter is that I don’t know anything about the autonomy of male genitalia. If he thinks that’s what would be best for our child then that’s the choice I’d make, and if he thinks it’s unnecessary then I will side with him. This is less about consent like other people are talking about, but more about keeping my hypothetical child safe and healthy. I don’t do excessive amounts of research on the benefits and issues that having a circumcision can cause. I don’t do any research actually, as well as the fact that I don’t know how to take care of male genitalia properly.

Obviously, if I were to know that I was having a male then I would of course learn more before their birth, but I still will have never experienced what it’s like to be circumcised or uncircumcised.

I wouldn't have, if I'd had a son. My sister had 2 boys and both of them were circumcised "so they'd be like their dad." One of my stepsons is and the other isn't because of the evolving opinions of their parents.

I asked my husband and he said he would have circumcised because of hygiene issues. Perhaps it's fortunate we never had a child together to spare us that argument.

I’d leave it up to my partner. I don’t care, I don’t have a penis. If I ended up a single mom I wouldn’t get it done for them because that sounds like a lot of work to deal with. I do prefer men who are circumcised but I’m sure my kid will be fine. My partner now is circumcised and against circumcision.

I don’t believe in circumcision and don’t see a need for it. I’d rather not circumcise my boy if I have one in the future but I will leave the decision to my future husband.
