I think it will be less widely taken than female birth control because, at the end of the day, the burden of birth is on the woman. This adds an extra layer of reasoning for women to avoid pregnancy that men don’t have to worry about.

Also, as someone who takes hormonal birth control herself, if this male BC will be hormonal I’m not sure that men would be able to handle the side effects or at least consider them worth not impregnating a woman.

Anyway, it won’t really impact me as I’ll be having kids soon and then my fiancé will be getting a vasectomy.

I don’t trust men to keep up with a daily pill. I can’t even remember to take a pill everyday, that’s why I opted for the depo shot. If they come out with alternative forms of BC like they do for women then maybe.

For it to get use:

Needs to be non-invasive. Vasectomy already exists
Needs to have nearly non-existent side effects
Needs to be affordable

Achieve all of those conditions and sure. I'd much rather not use a condom if I didn't have to.

Dude - I worked on male hormonal contraceptives about 20 years ago.

To be fair, the one I worked on never got to human trials; but - don't hold your breath. Hormonal birth control for men is hard yo.

I'm already on Male Birth Control. Seen as an "experimental compound", works wonders, I have no side effects! Bonus: My wife who gets side effects if she takes BC is happy about not needing to take any. And no condoms, so I'm happy!

Personally, I don’t think men will use it. Because they’re not the ones who get pregnant, or are culturally expected to raise kids, and there’s no way for a woman to verify at the time like a condom

The only men that might use it in large numbers would be cheaters, because money is at stake

I’ve had enough conversations about this to think men are actually pretty ok with not having control of their fertility. It’s continually very surprising to me.

So I think even if it passes trials, it will change nothing and women will continue to be the ones who deal with birth control.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets pulled for again causing a pretty similar set of side effects that women deal with.

The last few times we tried to have clinical trials for male birth control, all the men dropped due to "side effects" that were not nearly on the same level as women experience.

Birth control (for women) is a wonderful medication for those whose bodies agree with it--it can regulate cycles, help with acne, help with medical conditions like endometriosis, and of course, prevent pregnancy.

It also causes many women to experience terrible side effects.

Honestly i think this will make the birth rates plummet for good.

A good portion of nowadays babies are born unwanted, as in casual sex or by accident inside a relationship, very rare is the planned baby nowadays.

This could mean that men not wanting kids will also have a real impact on the birthrates, and the effects we are left to see honestly.

It will remove the unilateral control that women have over reproduction. They are not going to be happy about that, to say the least.

When both the men and women are young and in the hoe phase, having protection on both sides is extra good.

But when women reach that Epiphany phase as they approach 30 dudes can be like "yeah I totally want to have kids with you" meanwhile he's still taking the pill.

Women are going to be livid. There are going to be lawsuits against guys claiming that they defrauded her by lying and saying that they weren't on the pill.

And just like a woman says oops I don't know what happened I was on the pill I don't know why I got pregnant. Lol. He can play the same game. "I wasn't taking the pill I don't know what happened." Because he can just stop before any sort of blood test and claim he is innocent.

Instead of poking holes in condoms women are going to be finding his pills and replacing them with sugar pills. It's gonna be great.

I'm almost 50 and I've had a vasectomy so this isn't really going to do anything for me but for generation y and moving forward men will get to take back half the power.

Mark my words women are going to fight this with everything they've got which is usually a whole bunch of shame guilt insults innuendo and reputation destruction. Same old shit.

I've heard that it decreases testosterone, increase estrogen and basically turns you into more of a woman.

But if there were no bad side effects, yes I would take it.

As for how it would affect society, birth rates would drop even further I would imagine.

It won’t do anything to stop STD’s, so it’s useless for casual sex.

It only lasts for 3 weeks, so it’s too much of a hassle for committed sex.

My gf has a Mirena to negate her periods, but if she were to have it removed we’d probably do something like Phexxi instead of male BC.

I guess it would depend on the side affects that come with the birth control. I have stayed away from birth control because I couldn't hack the mood swings and weight gain. So if the side affects aren't too bad I could see men using it.

I don’t think it would be necessary for men to take it. As a female I hated what it did to my body, and could only imagine what it’d do with a man’s body. After being in it for 6 years I said I wouldn’t go back in it. Talked to my current boyfriend about it and we just stick to the pullout method and what not.

I think it will be a game changer, As long as side effects aren't terrible.... I can see men using it, and being more responsible about it since it's not a daily pill. It definitely will change the landscape more than the female condoms (which I have never seen a women use or even have)

"Pull out" isn't even a "method" worth considering.

Condoms break all the time and when you go from low sensation to high sensation after the thing breaks you come almost immediately. Lots of "Daddy wore a condom" babies out there.

I don’t think it’ll be effective for like decades to come because many men want to observe the side effects it has on them long term, only then will some be open to it but most will still push the responsibility onto women because “that’s how it’s always been”

men can't say "she trapped me with a baby" once this happens which is a frequent go to when a woman gets knocked up. (Of course this shouldn't be the case. None of these men probably want to use condoms and act like they have no control of their reproduction). I suspect some men won't want to deal with the side effects and won't be as good as women with taking it consistently. Since there's less on the line if they knock a woman up versus when a woman becomes pregnant. Nonetheless it's a good thing 👍

I believe the reason why female birth control was so impactful was that it allowed women to be promiscuous with much lower risk of getting pregnant.

Women, in almost all societies, have been the "pursued sex", while men were the pursuers. So with the advent of birth control pills, women could now have sex without marriage without having to worry about becoming single mothers. Even the ones who pretended to be Christians/Conservatives could now sleep around and then pretend that they're still virgins.

Since men are the pursuers, I don't see how the advent of male birth control can have a strong systematic impact like that. It's not like now men will magically become able to have a lot of sex.
