You're edging around an interesting paradox: tradwife influencers are by definition not tradwives. They make their own money. They reduce their partners to the 'camera husband', recording their antics as helpfully (some might say submissively) as any millennial blue-pill boyfriend. They care about their looks and post alluring photos for attention.

In other words, the most common way to promote this idea in the marketplace is inherently a distortion of it.

“Trad wife” is almost impossible realistically. In theory it may sound great, but the reality is that there are simply not enough “trad men” to go around. The number of men that can support a family on his own is maybe 25% of men, if that.

Also women have to be independent anyway. What is a woman going to do from the time she finishes high school until she finds a man to marry her? Sit at home and twiddle her thumbs all day? Wait for a man to come with his calling card and ask her parents for a chaperoned outing? Like lol. It’s in a woman’s best interest to build a way to live independently.

The whole tradwife trend on social media is an absolute scam. Those influencers are not tradwives, and they don’t actually live that lifestyle. They’re rich brats that monetize a life choice they know nothing about, LARPing as traditional wives.
The reasons that kind of content is unhealthy is that it romanticizes the life of a sahm & raises the bar to an untouchable level for any actual traditional wife. Any woman that raised children -regardless if she worked or not- knows that the current trad wife hype on social media is a fucking joke.
No one stops women from being trad wives. What I do find amusing, though, is that even when you hear young women saying that they would like to be trad wives, there are men labeling them as lazy gold diggers.

Simply put - ask any actual trad wife if her daily life has anything in common with the pathetic show the TikTok “trad wives” put together on the sets, after spending a few hours in the make up / hairstyle room.

The ballerina farm egg apron incident is a perfect example of why women would rather be single than a tradwife. Unappreciated after everything she's sacrificed. That poor woman gave up ballet to be with him and couldn't get one barn to be converted to a ballet studio, because anything that's just for her would be a waste to her husband. Even if the guy is a millionaire, he will make a woman give up her dreams and disregard her wishes for the rest of her life while she has no money of her own to pursue goals with.

I would rather be single for the rest of my life than end up dependent like that.

Women who want to live Trad lives sure can. The problem is that their partner need to make a buttload of money to make up for the lost salary. Economies in the developed world are not made for middle classe families to be supported by only one income, especially if you want to have 2+ kids.

Most (all?) of the tradwife influencers are marketing professionals. Hannah Neeleman, one of the larger tradwife influencers and mormon influencers, is a lifestyle influencer who markets via her "tradwife" lifestyle. Except that she doesn't actually live it. She has staff that care for kids, home and farm. They have a teacher who "homeschools" their children. She works outside the home in pageants. Of course, she also runs the marketing side of her lifestyle brand. Oh, she also went to Julliard.

So: went to Julliard, works outside the home, runs a business. Based on that, the needle is leaning more towards "feminist" than "tradwife" but whatever.

Feminism states you have the right to choose your life, be that progressive or traditional. Being a trad wife does not conflict with feminism unless you are trying to force women into that role.

Having said that, I grew up in a traditional type household, surrounded by traditional families and a traditional religion and I would rather do anything than fall into that life. Very little is as repulsive to me as the life I watched my mother and grandmother live through.

Most women do not have the option for that type of life even if they did wanted it. No one makes enough money to realistically live that way.

You are ironically espouseing a feminist view here.

The feminist movement (up through at least the 3rd wave) was all about giving women the option to choose which path to take.

I'll also note that this is an extremely sheltered, classist, and/ or disingenuous representation of the current state of the economy. In many places, couples/ families can not make ends meet with one spouse/ parent solely doing unpaid labor at home.

The trad wife movement is also, in and of itself, disingenuous. While they may want to playact "traditional marriage"

a. that "tradition" always seems to be specifically the white, middle-to-upper class, suburban 1950s TV portrayal of tradition (which was aspirational/ untrue even at the time)

b. it's actually 2024, so if they want to stop at any time, they can. The wife can have her own credit, bank account, medical privacy, get spousal/ child support if things end, etc. She can make money off of her videos of "being trad."

None of that is actually traditional. It's larp.

Hiding the alternative from them is not good.

No one is hiding anything.

Women are aware we can be trad wives, nontrad wives, non wives, etc. We don't need some random 19 year old -who secretly has paid work but pretends to be an unpaid sahw who makes pie crust from scratch- to tell us our options.

Surely in today’s economy, having two salaries is better than one? And if you actually fight over chores, pay someone to do them. Personally, I think a little like a trad wife. It is incredibly difficult to balance work and family for parents, in particular mothers. The idea that we should have it all is a lie. You need really excellent childcare, which is extremely expensive, and there’s still a million other things that need attention (laundry, grocery shopping, class volunteering, kids need new shoes, holiday planning…etc). Parents today are stressed out and miserable, and needing 2 parents to work full time is probably somewhat to blame. But the flip side ain’t roses either. Being a SAHM can be very fulfilling but also monotonous, draining and isolating. There’s no right or wrong choice, everyone just needs to do what is right for them.

I recently took a step back in my career so I could focus more time on the home and the kids. My husband’s work is quite busy, and I was miserable working crazy hours. Now I have a lot more flexibility (and not even that much less income). It’s awesome. I made banana bread in the middle of the day earlier this week.

But I’m still working and I could never not work. I need something to mentally stimulate me. I am addicted to achievement.

When my daughter grows up I will encourage her to get an education and a skill set she can market herself with. If she chooses to drop out of the workforce in her mid 20s to start popping out kids I wouldn’t begrudge her of that. But women need a backup plan - being a tradwife is only as valuable as having an amazing supportive partner. If not that can leave a woman extremely vulnerable.

Has anyone stopped women from being "trad wives" who sit at home, take care of the kids, and churn butter? We can still do that. Hell, I was a SAHW for a bit while I was waiting for my PR to go through, I didn't get pelted with rotten tomatoes, nor was I ostracized by polite society.

Most women just don't want to do it. Sure, in fantasy land it's really great to be able to just chill at home, spend time with your loved ones, and bake cookies all day. Commuting to work sucks, bosses suck, sometimes work sucks in general, it can be stressful, demanding, and you have to deal with Heather from accounting who loves talking about some stupid reality show she watches. I can see how the idea of not doing that is very tempting, especially if you throw in someone who takes care of all the financial stuff for you. In reality, few people can afford that, and many people won't be satisfied with that for longer than a few months. I thought staying at home for a bit was gonna rock, it didn't. It was super boring, and incredibly isolating, it did a number on my mental health. I'm sure for a lot of women it would be the opposite, they would thrive when they can stay at home, more power to them. But I don't think we need to encourage dependence on a man as some solution to the general unpleasantness of current-day existence. It's just substituting one set of problems for a different one.

They will see the results of women before them

Most of us have seen that already or, at the very least, we've heard of it. Our grandmothers have told us all about "the good old days" and they were some of the biggest cheerleaders for our independence. Being reliant on someone else for everything is a giant gamble, and it doesn't pay off more often than not. The highly edited, heavily aestheticized videos of some women LARPing should be something everyone takes with a giant grain of salt.

I would 100% be a childfree trad wife. If you add kids to then I am out.

However, I am an ingredients house. So I already know how to cook.

I was raised by an old black grandmother, no one will ever out clean me. My hospital corners are some of the best.

My dad taught me the power of networking so I am always at a party gathering information to be used at a later date.

I am living the life of a trad wife now except just for me. I am on sabbatical for another six months. Right now I am baking bread, making jam, freezing meals. Just doing it up.

I am not doing all of that with kids though.

This discussion is an interesting one because I think the thing no one is talking about is this key point:

Here is an article of a feminists being jealous of Mormon trad wives and their traditional lifestyle.

When, the case of the US at least, I look at the polls and at surveys on abortion rights...I legit have come to believe that a lot of women are straight up lying about how progressive they actually are. They're still deeply influenced by gender norms and have significant patriarchal expectations of their male counterparts. I feel sites like Reddit have essentially become astroturfed disinformation platforms to benefit groups like white/UMC/educated women.

I think a lot of women want to lead the tradwife life, hence why there has been such an explosion of tradwife influencing in the last few years. I also dont think there is particular difference in the appeal of this lifestyle across political lines. I simply think the presence of "boss babeing" and casual misandry is merely a backlash against the economic decline of younger men.
