As I understand it attempted suicide is much more common amongst women but successful suicide is much more common by men. So if the threat of suicide is an act of violence then women are much more violent in this regard.

Threat to self harm is indeed emotional abuse. Problem is, men usually don't threat to commit suicide, they just do it and most of the time quite successfully.

On the other hand, women threat to self harm A LOT! Most of them never end up doing it, or make sure to not really harm themselves too much...

Threats of suicide and self harm are abusive. Actual suicide is not abusive since the dead person can't benefit from their death's affect on others. Since women report attempting suicide without succeeding at much higher rates than men, women are the primary perpetrators of such abuse.

I got into a dating situation with a girl I had a crush on. I just got out of a 6 year relationship where I ended up breaking it off after she cheated on me. I also had a death close to me a few months prior. I should have known better than to start dating so soon after 2 traumatic events, but I went for it anyway. Our first date was amazing, as was our second. Then she started ghosting me. One week, then two, then three. I objected to this treatment and broke it off. However when I refused to play her game, she asked for forgiveness and told me to come back. So I did against my better judgment. This began a cycle, good date, get closer, ghosted, argue, try to leave, asks me to come back, rinse repeat. Towards the end we had become intimate. By this time I ignored a lot of red flags, particularly her boasting of how cruel she had been to her father and ex. When I asked her if we should go elsewhere to be intimate as her ex was now her roommate, and still hoped to reconcile she flatly said she could give a shit. After our third incident I naively thought we were on track to a relationship. So I asked why she kept asking me to come back and why she wouldn't let me go. I asked her if she loved me. She said she did. At this point I told her about my past and she wept, saying I didn't deserve the losses I had experienced. She said she'd never hurt me. Fast forward a month, she's ghosted me again. By now I've been led to believe we're really in a committed, loving relationship and all of the arguments and trials had led to being with the most amazing woman I ever knew. I finally asked "are we or are we not in a relationship and do you or do you not love me?" She said she didnt. My heart stopped, withered and died. I felt used, manipulated, and abandoned. What I thought was going to be the greatest love of my life was a lie. At any time before she said she loved me I could have handled it. I wanted to walk away and tried. She knew what to say to keep me in place, so she said it. I wanted to die because every time I hoped, what I hoped in was a lie. I let her know as such. So what did she do? She called the police. Not for my welfare, but because she wanted me to go to jail. She thought I was playing a game, and she hates to lose. Instead if telling her friends the truth (that she lied about loving me to keep me in check) she told them I was a stalker. She told the police I was going to shoot up a movie theater, and that I had previously assaulted her. She then attempted to put a restraining order on me (which I successfully fought off.) All because I dared to want to die. She even lied to me (we'll get back together!) to get me to a place where I could be aprehended by the police. She was upset nothing happened when I came home. To this day she continues to lie to her family and friends to protect her image. She even teamed up with my most recent ex to attempt to destroy the evidence I used to successfully fight her off in case I ever had to use it against her. Spoilers: my attorney and I still have all the original screenshots stating that we were intimate and were in a relationship. So remember gentlemen, If your SO mindfucks you so hard you want to die, don't let them know their abusive behavior was the trigger, just wander off and die quietly. /s

TLDR: Girl I thought the world of lied to me about loving me, drove me to want to die. She thought it was a ploy, tried to have me jailed. Didn't work. Told friends and family I was a stalker, tried to get a restraining order. Didn't work because I saved months of FB messages and texts. Still holds onto lie until this day.

Male suicide is self directed male violence. (just like female suicide is self directed female violence)

Self harm/ threats is in the abuser's playbook. It's a fairly uncommonly used guilt tactic, but used enough. However, it almost never manifests as a completed suicide.
