This is retarded. A lot of you will say "if women can meet the standards" but that's stupid. Firefighting is an EXTREMELY popular career choice among men. MOST MEN will not cut it because the only guys who get paid firefighting jobs are so far beyond the minimum requirements.

The "standards" are totally irrelevant due to the context of the fact that the real competition is waaaaaaaaay above it and this is a good thing because professional firefighters should be the best available men. Not just "good enough".

It is absolutely idiotic, pure lunacy, to select women over men for firefighting. Thankfully, most women do the discrimination for us.

Source: tried to become a firefighter when I was 18 and had the experience firsthand. I easily beat the minimum requirements and I was nowhere near being good enough to beat the competition for the job. This is in Australia with regards to paid firefighting. There are also far more volunteer (read: unpaid) firefighters. Bush fires can be a big thing here. I'm not overly familiar with how different things will be in other countries, but I am doubtful that it's much different. I.e. firefighting attracts elite and motivated men.

what needs to happen, in order to shut this bullshit down, is someone needs to die... of course it can't be a man because then nobody would care... it needs to be a woman or child! and they need to die specifically because a woman firefighter couldn't perform the same job as a man but was made a firefighter anyway, despite failing to pass the same physical requirements. thought I'd chime in. Most of my adult life I was an artillery NCO in the army. Part of the standards is being able to carry 3 separate rounds from the ammo vehicle to the gun, lock, load and fire. (depending on the type of round they can weigh up to 75lbs or so). Lot of men and most woman can't do this. I'd go so far as to say that any woman that can is probably a pro athlete of one type of another. I had 1 too many conversations asking/demanding to know why woman can't be artillery and just do other stuff. (driving the vehicles, aiming the gun, pulling the chord and firing the gun) There was no explaining to them, yes-we all do different things during a fire mission but the people have to be interchangeable. That's the job, including carrying, loading and locking 3 rounds in about 30 seconds. (was in AIT about 25 years ago, honestly don't remember the exact standard) That's the job. It's 13B, there is no 13.5 Bravo where you do everything but load the rounds. I can't say there are no woman who can do this, but i can say I've never met one. I've met a lot of woman who just wanted to make the job less exclusive-actually had one thought the army should make 75lb rounds weigh less than 75lbs. I realize firefighters do other things beside break down doors and carry people. But that is part of being a firefighter and if it's a standard every male FF has to achieve I don't think a woman should be held to a lower standard.

A dept. in my town was taking this same approach. They held the fitness tests, and surprise surprise, no women passed. Instead of hiring men that did pass, they invited only the women back to redo the tests with lighter sled drag weights. Then placed both of them number 1 and 2 in the hiring pools.

Men and women are not equal physically or emotionally, there is a reason that there is unequal representation in many jobs, it happened naturally, they should leave it alone.

In the USA we have BFOQ laws which stands for Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications. They are a blessing in situations like these and they provide legal protection for certain forms of discrimination. I'm a hard believer in "If you're qualified, then you're qualified." as a vague general guiding principle.

As a teacher, men don't need to speak up versus be silent. Play a sport? Look like you can coach? Bam! You will always get a job before a women. It fills the need for coaches and men in teaching. I had 3 men in my college graduating class. All of them sucked at grammar and did far below the rest of us. All of them were hired first. So, not a good comparison. As a firefighter's wife, you sure better be able to haul my husband or someone else out of a burning building. Pass the fitness requirements and by all means, get placed on the proper place on the hiring list. The proper place meaning where you stand after testing, interview, and qualifications.

Actually male elementary teacher applicants are few and far between. From my experience male elementary teachers get hired quicker because they are sought after as a role model and provide support in areas that have been more comfortably in the male domain... I'm not saying it's right, but I have know multiple male elementary teachers get offered multiple jobs at once while female teachers must compete with 90% of the other teachers.

this makes no sense to me. its reasonable to expect to be treated fairly when working in construction (or firefighting for that matter), aka not being harassed for being female etc. but this... I've even told a boss off when he told me he gave me special treatment because I was female. Let's say there was a system that gave preference to men in female dominated fields, such as primary school education and social work, and gave preference to women in male dominated fields, such as STEM. Standards would not be lowered in any way. Would you guys be for such a system? Or would a system that had community outreach (but not preferences in hiring) be a better idea?

Thanks to you guys, I stopped being a lurker and made an account just to respond to this. I have many friends in the fire service, both male and female. I'm currently trying to get hired. Your comments here really annoyed me, because of one of my friends in particular. I've known her for years, and she has dedicated her life to being a firefighter. She's no more than 5'5", maybe 130 pounds. I'm 6'1 and 210. I have been on the receiving end of this woman hauling me out of a building, and let me tell you it was not comfortable. I was removed faster than I ever have been. Her strength is NOT in question in my mind. In fact, I'd rather have her come for me than some of the others I know. You guys need to understand that things are changing; get out of the past. If the fire service diversifies, we can grow as an industry. Stop thinking everything is an attack on you. It's not. On the one hand, people are totally right on the point they are making when it comes to jobs in education, where no reforms are being made to promote male hiring. On the other hand, we should try and keep the discussion a bit more civil and logical in this thread. Sure, women will -on average- not be suited for a firefighting position. That doesn't mean that there aren't women who are perfectly capable of physically and mentally handling the job. I am willing to bet that out of 200 humans there are way more than 4 women able to be firefighters (simply put it's like saying only 4 in 200 women can physically be on par with males, which is absurd). The bar isn't being lowered to get random women into firefighting. What is happening here, will just be an incentive for a really small amount of women that are in a position to do the job and might had not been chosen due to their gender. Not more women are going to apply to become a firefighter, it is just a way of promoting the few that are able and willing to do so. People are gonna jump on me saying that "Sure, not more women will apply and all, but when they are choosing between a man and a woman that are equally skilled and qualified, they will DISCRIMINATE against the man and choose the woman". To which I can only say... Yeah, this is literally how it's supposed to work, lol. If the 2 are actually equally suited for the job then SOME decision HAS to be made and tipping the scales ever so slightly for 1% of women actually capable of doing the job, doesn't sound awfully bad to me. After all, isn't this what we want to happen in the sector of education for men anyways? At least that's what the title suggests.

We must remember that this is not a fight for who gets the most rights. We, as men, should not get pissed, because a reform is favorable to women in certain work fields, and to be honest in this case, rightfully so. It is still perfectly reasonable to argue for the same reforms in similarly misrepresented fields for us, but the picture people are painting in this thread makes it seem like anything positive going on for women is downright outrageous if men don't get the exact equivalent at the same moment. This is r/mensrights not r/bashwomensrights and I don't see how this reform affects men's rights in any way, other than giving us a reason to point out that the same principle should be applied to the education sector.
