Female applicants to be given preference for firefighting jobs: "preference in selection will be given to female applicants assessed as suitable" Male teacher applicants in elementary education are expected to remain silent.
I was an EMT and knew several women who went to firefighter school, passed all the physicals, and were immediately hired because they were supremely qualified and that's all the fire station fucking cared about. There's not done grand conspiracy to keep women out, but it's also not like women universally hate such jobs, one of the women I worked with was a US army sergeant and despite being 5'4, could easily carry my full dead weight during training, and was an all around complete badass. Not like all chicks are super princesses.
Certainly I wholly agree, but I'm seeing a lot of good old fashioned /r/mensrights style just straight up hating on women and acting like they don't stand a chance at this and there's no such thing as a woman who'd want a job as hard as firefighting and that's kinda shitty.
In researching this I found who the first women firefighter was:
The first known female firefighter of the United States was a slave from New York named Molly Williams, who was said to be "as good a fire laddie as many of the boys," and fought fires during the early 1800s.
Just want to try and present another side here, but want to start by saying I agree that safety of fellow FFs and the public is a large concern and tests should not be lowered in those concerns. However, there may be actual and legitimate reasons to also encourage more female FFs. In the states, from my friends how work in their local depts (this is mostly suburbia), they tell me that 90%+ of what they do is not fight fires, but more social and domestic related issues. Having more female FFs could allow them to more appropriately handle more cases in these areas. Also, having a more balanced workforce (not saying it has to be 50/50) could also provide additional benefits that does not relate to fires at all. Women tend to index high on empathy, which could be beneficial overall to the force. I know we all tend to jump to the pulling a victim from a fire scenario right away, but there could be procedures put in place that maybe solve for this issues. I'm not even sure if every job in a firehouse even requires you to be running into burning buildings. Are there dispatch, HR, or other field jobs? Long story short, I think there are concerns equal on both sides. However, if having women in these roles could lead to amber positive benefit, the question might be how to make it work rather than saying no and using fear as the main reason. Listen & be creative. We are smart people and no one wants to intentionally hurt anyone. I don't think there needs to be such a large divide on this issue. Caution should be taken, but anger should be left aside.
Okay, really not trying to lie, just sharing information I have received from friends of mine that were FFs in suburban America. Not quote me on the exact ratio, but house fires where I grew up were incredibly rare. More often than not, they were responding to car crashes, noxious orders where there was the chance of gas leaks, & safety issues unrelated to fires. Lots of time calls were in response to the elderly citizens. One of my friends had horror stories of finding people covered in the own feces and having to literally clean up the mess. His own words would tell you there are a lot less heroics in the field than you may think, but that depends on perspective. This might be different in a city environment or another country, every place is different.
The whole point was just to present another side or view point of the same story. What if there is a case where the male leadership of these departments want to take on this initiative irrespective of "feminist" influence. If their experience leads them to believe there is a net positive would you so strongly disagree with them or hear what they had to say?
Your personal tone seems very angry. Am I reading that incorrectly? Why so much fever and anger? This particular issue isn't even that important to me, but being able to discuss the motives and solutions overall is important in a neighborhood, town, city, state or country. Do you not think your conclusion of feminist wanting cushy air conditioned jobs,l and wanting their name in lights seem a little drastic? Seems mean spirited in a conversation as you are large conclusions on the motives being the initiative.
I have no idea what you are talking about. Who is talking about glory? Is there absolutely zero circumstances, in you opinion, where having more women in the force be a positive thing? If yes, just say you don't think women or having more women would bring value to being in the force. This tangent on "glory" seems like too large a leap for me.
Not exactly. Women have 40% less upper body strength than men on average, and upper body strength is very important for firefighting. Also this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF-YeWnIJfU
A 5'5", 130 pound woman has no business in firefighting. And firefighting is not an "industry" that needs to weaken itself to compete, it's a publicly subsidized, life-saving service. You also said it was "not comfortable," from which I take it that she drug you on the ground (because any other scenario is basically impossible). If she were a larger woman or a man she could have just carried you instead.
We do not owe anyone anything just because they want it really, really bad.
