Don’t make female versions of movies. Make original movies. Tell a story we haven’t heard
[–]ThEGr33kXII 246 points247 points248 points 7 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link
Hollywood has a major issue with creativity at the moment. Maybe that's why the virtue signalling is strong? A way to not be original but claim they are?
[–]OrphanAnthem 93 points94 points95 points 7 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
It's not a issue of creativity it's just low hanging fruit
[–]ThEGr33kXII 46 points47 points48 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Well that's kinda what I'm saying. It's easier to virtue signal than to create something original and worthy of our time and money.
It just gives the impression that they just aren't capable of originality.
[–]Rafaeliki 23 points24 points25 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
It's just less risky to repackage already successful content. There arent a million fast and furious movies because of virtue signaling.
It is funny that people still got up in arms over Black Panther which actually was original content but for some reason still upset people.
[–]ThEGr33kXII 27 points28 points29 points 7 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
It's because people want things to be good regardless of the virtue of it's cast (outside of acting ability) yet these days it's a case of "You have to like this because we have <insert group of the month> in it; regardless of it's actual Merritt's." Then when it's a crap film they go all "Oh, you're a <insert slur>ist because you don't like it".
Most people don't care who is in media as long as it's good. Good example. I never ever even noticed that Repley was a women, I saw her as Ripley, because quite honestly it didn't matter. She was/is awesome and I could relate to her reactions and actions, her fears and her coming to terms with it all. Can you imagine how they'd do it now? Thank goodness I don't have to...
(Note; I've not seen black panther, but then I'm not an MCU fan... I can't imagine black panther is so different to MCU films I have seen...)
[–]fuckeveryone________ 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was called a racist for saying I didn't want to see Black Panther. I hate superhero movies and haven't seen one in years...
[–]Rafaeliki 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I genuinely liked Black Panther. I'm a white dude. To assume that I only liked it because I'm "virtue signalling" is stupid. I don't care if people didn't like it. I won't assume their reasoning for simply not enjoying the movie but when they go out of their way to bash a movie it seems like there are ulterior motives. I don't go around talking about films I didn't like.
[–]ThEGr33kXII 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think you're missing the point. You're a reasonably rational individual (or so it appears from your measured response) so it's understandable that you might miss the under current. There are people out there claiming that the only reason someone doesn't like a film that's sold on it's virtue (all black cast/women lead etc) is because they don't like said virtue, regardless of the actual reason for not liking it.
For example, you don't think the new Ghost Busters was great? You're a misogynist. You don't like Black Panther, Racist.
I believe the going out of their way is largely because of being branded these things. Most people aren't misogynist or racist (in my experience) but to get labelled as such out of hand for not liking something creates confrontation, this is what you're seeing.
Captain Marvel is getting a lot of fallout due to Brie Larson's (quite frankly sexist and racist comments) saying that too many White Men have an opinion... It's no surprise that the attacked group is pushing back.
This is my interpretation of it all. It could quite easily be wrong.
[–]Rafaeliki 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I fully agree. There are unreasonable people on both sides. It just seems the narrative only focuses one direction, especially in subs like this.
There are tons of people who hated Black Panther because it was a majority black movie. I never saw the new Ghostbusters.
[–]jaheiner 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There was good acting from multiple sides, it was a solid story and it was fun getting to know about a hero I'd honestly never known much about when I was a kid and into comic books.
Honestly the part when he's talking to his ancestors and gets angry/calls them out was really good acting on his part and felt genuine/compelling.
I'm all for movies with diverse casts as long as they were cast for talent and because they fit the role. SJW Girlpower/Racial power movies are just a way of telling those people that they can't succeed unless they have no competition.
[–]FiddyOneCent 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Black Panther from a film stand point, really wasn't that good.
[–]Rafaeliki 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I like how you tried to frame that as some sort of objective fact. "From a film standpoint". Yeah it's a film.
[–]FiddyOneCent 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You can look at it from a filmmakers view or look at it as entertainment. They are different.
Black Panther didn't have great acting or great dialogue and the CGI wasn't anything new. Even compared to other superhero films, I wouldn't put it in the top 5. Sure, it was entertaining, but didn't deserve any of the nominations it received.
That better for you?
[–]Rafaeliki -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Black Panther had great acting and cinematography.

It's fake diversity in order to appeal to chinese audiences and sjw audiences. Thats why you never see openly gay characters in big productions, because they don't actually care about diversity.
[–]functionalsociopathy 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think that it's more likely that the virtue signaling is what's killing creative or even just original thoughts.

More specifically, don't try to reinvent franchises with gimmicks. Not only did Ghostbusters include the available original cast and many nostalgic things from the original they even used a lot of the same types of scenes. Feig said he wanted nothing to do with the original movie, but you sure could have fooled me. Finally, Ghostbusters was basically a sci-fi with comedic elements and the new one is a bunch of SNL skits strung together that doesn't take the ghosts seriously at all. If you remake movies you can't help but compare them, and the new one rarely isn't panned and even rarer to be actually liked. They often just plaster the name on a turd and bank on the existing fanbase to see it just because.

But I do mind that she is the Doctor because "LOOK, LOOK! IT'S A WOMAN! CAN I GET A GOOD-BOY-COOKIE NOW?"
[–]dcommini 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's my main problem with it. I've never been opposed to the Doctor becoming a woman as long as 1. She was an obvious good choice for the role, and 2. It wouldn't be shoved down our throats in the name of "diversity" or whatever popular buzzwords.
I usually feel the same towards most casting decisions, don't shove a woman or POC into a role just because of diversity, put them in the role because they as an actor do a good job in that role.
[–]Sindoray 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Some of my favorite shows like Alias, Nikita and a few others are female-lead, and I love their role. I fucking hate it when they gender-force stuff down my throat. I’m even pro/ok with gender locked classes in games where most favor female gender. But pls, stop the stupid gender force. It’s stupid and makes no sense.

[–]TeslasAndComicbooks 27 points28 points29 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Diversity is fine as long as they make it feel natural. If you’re making a show or a movie just to check a box then the final product is probably going to be trash.

Yeah Bohemian Rhapsody is about one of the greatest Rock bands of all time. Who’s lead singer was gay, so that’s part of the movie. It’s about Queen though. I love the parts where it kind of shows their creative processes. Queen is amazing. They’re so brilliant musically.

Bohemian Rhapsody is actually pretty good. Homosexuality is a theme but the main one is really the music. Great acting !
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm glad it stuck to the relationship dynamics between the band and Freddie while moving away from his sexual orientation. Yes, it's a part of the plot but, for once, not hogging the spotlight.
[–]TheKingOfPancake 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I liked the fact that the movies wasn't about his sexual experiences or his drug abuse.
[–]Endless_Summer 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Why would homosexuality be a theme? They don't accurately portray him as bi?
(I obviously haven't seen it)
[–]TheKingOfPancake 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No they openly say that he's gay, I've learned today that this is innacurate.
It's a theme because we see how this affected his life but it isn't overdone.
[–]MrCoolioPants 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
He says "I think I'm bisexual" in the movie, they didn't get anything wrong there.
[–]xx2Hardxx 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Some of these other answers aren't 100% accurate. In the first part of the movie he's in a heterosexual relationship, then that relationship fails after a few things (his sexual curiosity, the life of a touring rock star) and the rest of the film focuses primarily on his homosexual ones. (The main focus overall isn't actually on his sexuality, but it certainly is a significant theme.)
[–]Funmachine 15 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Bohemian Rhapsody is actually pretty bad. It's full of terrible dialogue, boring characters, poor pacing, awful editing and horrible inacuracies. I would never recommend it to anybody for any reason other than "look how they made one of the most charismatic performers of all time into a bland lifetime original movie." The only remotely good thing about the film was the music.
[–]Arthur___Dent -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[+]TheKingOfPancake -14 points-13 points-12 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're just a butthurt fan but I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt.
What inacuracies ?
[–]Funmachine 24 points25 points26 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Tbh I'm not even that big of a fan of Queen. So, I can't say I felt terribly insulted by it because of the disservice it did to them, more the disservice it did to filmmaking. The biggest inacuracies being Queen never broke up, they had just finished a world tour before Live Aid. Freddy was the last member to do a solo album, Freddy didn't find out he had aids before Live Aid. Freddy was bi not gay. Freddy never had an awkward relationship with Mary after breaking up with her. Live aid wasn't making no money until Queen came on were they then reached their entire target. A lot of the music was played in the wrong order of release. Also, it portrayed the other band members of Queen as the most boringly sterile 70s rockstars that could have possibly ever have existed. Mike Myers character doesn't exist.
[–]metaltrite 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
I’ll admit I haven’t given it a chance because the only hype I’ve been hearing about it was from gay couples. Then it went and won 4 oscars and I’m like “yep it’s probably just a couple hours about a guy being gay in 80s” since that’s all the Academy cares about.
Btw why is this in this sub?
[–]Jabba___The___Slut 31 points32 points33 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]xx2Hardxx 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Just to let you know, although the movie does contain scenes depicting Freddie's sexuality, they are done tastefully and aren't really the focal point of the film. While Freddie is the main focus of the band, the rest of the members are important characters who are more than just supporting characters to the bisexual guy, if you know what I mean.
[–]metaltrite 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The film of Kerouac's ''On the Road'' was so fucking bad It's truly shocking. Unless you like gay love scenes, which I don't, to each their own. I'm actually amazed that Kerouac has not erupted from the earth to flail his rotted limbs in a fatal attack on the director. ''So Brave'' all the press cooed about the groundbreaking male makeout scenes. Literary critics wondered how they power washed all the literary elements out of the story.

I'd actually really recommend Love Simon if you find yourself with 2 free hours.
I was like you, I had no inherent interest in it because it just seemed like a movie that was riding a success wave because it featured a gay main character. But then on a plane ride to Europe last year I was bored and saw it was free to watch so I figured "what the hell, let's give it a shot".
Let me just say the people who spread it's word of mouth praise (and to a lesser but not non existent extent, the marketing team) really sold the movie in the wrong way. It's not a movie that's good because it features a gay character, it's a really good movie that happens to feature a gay character. I think what the writers/directors did right was that they didn't frame it as his struggles with deciding whether or not to come out were some big unrelatable problem that only other gay people could possibly understand, they just framed them as a different kind of "coming of age" issue. The scenes in particular where he talks to his mom, dad and sister after word gets out, against his will, that he's gay were actually very easy to empathize with even though it's an issue I've never had to deal with. They just made his being gay seem like any other secret that teenagers feel the need to hide from the world and that made it a lot more accessible to me even though I'm straight.

I thought it was good, but it's pretty gay: all of its gravitas comes from the process of coming out. As an empathizing non-gay, I found the depiction pretty well-done, but what do I know.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
If you care so much about that I give you the right to know about gay. I hate the fact people feel they can’t talk about things if they aren’t part of the demographic
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I'm about as far right as they come, (I'm a woman and sometimes question the wisdom of universal suffrage), but still feel lucky that I am hetero in a largely hetero world. I also know that testosterone is not known for inducing tolerance, so I feel doubly blessed that even if I were gay, I'd be a gay woman. I still pretty vividly remember when HIV was new, and how Matthew Shepard was found. So even though I still think that children are better off with constant care by role models of both sexes, and in particular need heterosexual relationship role modeling if they are hetero, I still feel a need to make sure gays are protected from assholes. Part of that for me is acknowledging that I am not gay and represent the perspectives only of the dominant orientation.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Since homosexual couples usually only have adoption available I’d always recommend adopting a child of your own gender. It’d be especially difficult for 2 men to raise a girl and vice versa and would fuck the child up most likely
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
See I disagree. I think 2 dads would teach a girl how to interact with the opposite sex better than two women ever could, and as children grow up, modeling interaction with the opposite sex is vitally important. I think 2 gay guys can do a pretty good job teaching a straight girl how to be womanly. Not so much for 2 lesbians teaching a hetero little boy how to be masculine.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I feel like what’s most important is the ideas passed across rather than the gender they’re exposed to. But it’s always a good idea to have somebody around like an aunt or uncle to teach them what you can’t
From a straight female perspective: you learn the outlines of what is pleasing company to the opposite sex from your dad and brothers. You also learn what behavior is pathological or to be avoided in the opposite sex from your dad and brothers. They literally model acceptable hetero female behavior and normal hetero male behavior in a way that no lesbian(s) can for a straight female child. Modeling femininity is easy enough, because it is all yielding, warmth, and appearance, things that a girl can learn by reacting to men, be they gay or straight. Modeling masculinity is far more complex: how do you teach a boy how to usefully manage aggression and strength if you literally have no idea what they are? That is something only men can teach men, imho.

I‘d say Love Simon is an okay/decent movie. I don’t think it’s amazing, but it’s a decent cheesy teen/high school romance except with a gay main character. I suppose it does capture the experience of a gay male teen with some accuracy but with an added dramatic cheesy teen romance flair.
I would go in expecting a gay version of She’s All That, Never Been Kissed, or To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before... not like Brokeback Mountain or Call Me By Your Name or Lady Bird.

Why i haven't watched Captian Marvel
[–]theGrayDeadpool 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
Captain Marvel isn't really about diversity. It's an origin story about a character with a crazy backstory. Call me crazy but the Captain Marvel name is a passed down title. One of my favorite characters in Mavel comics is Genis Vell the second Captain marvel ( a dude) son of the original Captain Mar Vell ( also a dude). Why does a story about a woman have to be a diversity mandated movie? Marvel definitely dropped a diversity shit with Black Panther but that's a whole different bucket of worms
[–]conradfart 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. I'm not sure how it helps men or women to go "Ooh, a woman superhero!" or "Ooh, a woman scientist!"
It's not treating people equally to prejudge their achievements as more or less worthy because of their genitals.
[–]theGrayDeadpool 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
AGREED. She is a super hero in a super hero movie. I promise you it will follow the lines of any other super hero movie. It's only the sensationalists out there trying to spin this into some feminist narrative
[–]TheCrabWithTheJab 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I think it was brie Larson's comments that made it seem like a forced push for diversity.

" I don't need a 40 year old white dude telling me what didn't work for him about "a wrinkle in Time"". Basically she said she saw mostly white people doing interviews and now requests for only minorities to interview her. Not saying she's right or wrong in her actions, but it does lend itself to the thought that Capt Marvel is working under this agenda as well, making it seemed like a forced diversity move.
[–]theGrayDeadpool 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Huh yeah that's a pretty stupid thing to say I can't really defend that one
[–]theGrayDeadpool 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
After some research to me it seems like Brie Larson is the real problem. Mostly in that she is ignorantly white knighting for a cause that certainly doesn't need her. She definitely has alienated a core demographic of comics movie goers
[–]theGrayDeadpool 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
To be fair I actually dislike the character Carol Danvers. I think making her Captain Marvel in the comics was just a move to also be able to make Marvel's version of the Wonder woman movie.
[–]Dancing_Anatolia 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It doesn't have to be about diversity, the lead actor and the writers just explicitly told us that they made it that way.

Forgive us for assuming a movie that is mass-marketed with a female lead character that none of us have ever heard of is a "diversity" movie, in today's climate of diversity shitstorms.
[–]theGrayDeadpool -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Because I'm sure you were aware of who Dr.Strange was before that movie came out. Suicide squad sure pushed the shit out of Harley Quinn but I don't remember anybody crying then. If it's a Marvel movie then yeah it's mass marketed.... I'm not how you figure it is a diversity movie just cause the protagonist is a female
Forgive us for assuming a movie that is mass-marketed with a female lead character
That's about all there is to it huh
For now, yeah. After years of things being arbitrarily female, and the current political climate of hollywood, it's an assumption.

This is why identity politics annoy me. It's just prejudice going the other way.
"You're [some minority intersection]. You should do/like [something stereotypical for what I labeled you as]"
What it actually means is that you're not seen as a person anymore. You're just one unit of a category of people from now on.
I stood up for a gay friend once when a girl said she needed a "gay best friend," telling her he's not a fucking accessory. He later confided that he feels constantly objectified around women.
[–]xx2Hardxx 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ugh it really bothers me when these things happen and people eat it up. Like when the creators of a show or movie or video game brag about their character being gay, for example, and then proceed to pat themselves on the back for how "progressive" they're being when its obvious pandering. Like the character's sexuality never even becomes relevant to the plot; its just a bullet point the creators brag about to earn brownie points.
And then some people call me a homophobe when I say I don't buy it...

This reminds me I've always wondered. For "regular people" gay guys (i.e. non-flamboyant "out and loud" etc) whose personalities are not 100% wrapped around muh sexuality, is it a little off-putting to see heterosexual relations in a movie? Like a hetero couple kissing, or love scene, etc.

[–]Drag0nV3n0m231 -3 points-2 points-1 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I highly doubt this has ever actually happened to you. I assume it went more like this:
“You should watch X, it has a gay main character!”
“Is it good?”
“Yeah! The main character is gay and he rough plot outline”
“But is it good?”
“I think so, but you have to decide for yourself, I think you would”
“BuT iS iT gOoD?! wHaTs ThE pLoT?!”
Generally, a big reason you enjoy a show and recommend it to others is because it vibes well with you, and it probably will with someone else. You probably won’t like it if it doesn’t have a good plot.
Also, I feel most media with LGBT representation or diversity have very good, or at least good, plots and such, as it’s immediately more intensely judged because it has diversity.
Judging from your other comment, you just seem to hate any media that’s gay, probably because you semi-resent lgbt even though you, yourself, are one. Maybe go to therapy or something? It helps

Alien 1-3, Terminator 1&2, Annihilation, Hereditary, Halloween, Tomb Raider, The Witch, Scream, Prometheus, Mad Max Fury Road, Under the Skin, It Follows, Alita Battle Angel, Ghost in the Shell, The Babbadook etc etc. All well received films or classic films with female leads/main characters that no one complained about.
It's almost as if people unhappy with Ghostbusters didn't like it because it was terribly made, unfunny and marketed in a manner that insulted anyone who disagreed, rather than because it starred women.

Critically it got pretty good reviews, and the director's cut is much better. Certainly has it's problems, like the aforementioned moron characters, but of all the criticism it did receive, none of it was because it had a female lead.
Then in Alien Covenant they just kill her off screen for no good reason.

Let’s not be unfair here. Most of those movies are also made with a male audience in mind. The main female lead is often (not always, but often) in various states of undress, is good at some skill men can respect (such as combat), and absolutely not made with a female audience in mind (the only one that doesn’t fit these descriptions is The Babadook).
Ghostbusters 2016 was not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it was certainly made to appeal more to a female audience. A lot of the criticism it received was “feminist trash bs” or that it was “sexist” or that “women can’t be funny”. But in actuality, had the movie been made with a male cast it would’ve just been another “boring cash grab remake” instead of a hated “sexist crash grab remake” that had the entire internet collectively outraged. You need only look at the trailer. People judged and hated that movie before they even saw it. It’s not unrealistic to say that a lot of people went into the theatre ready to hate it. And the hate the trailer got wasn’t just because people are tired of remakes.

You know I hadn't thought about it like that. If so, that seriously shoots its permise entirely in the foot in the process. It was otherwise enjoyable except for the otherwise out-of-character misandry explicitly expressed ("a he gets noticed, a she gets ignored" ... are you for real?) towards bringing on an otherwise qualified man or men to the team - took me right out of what little story there was.

I wrote this on a different sub, same discussion, just pasting it here:
Every movie has a script. Regardless of genre, context, political subtext. This script can be objectively good - eg it has a non fractured storyline, it has a working method of creating suspense or belief in the unbelievable/unrealistic, it has a believable character development, and/or - why not - a strong message to convey.
It does not matter if you make a horror movie, a gay cowboy romance, a comedy or a war movie. If you have a script that fills one or more of these checkboxes in a good/excellent way, you are making an objectively better movie than those who do not have a good/strong script.
So, these general components can be quite handy to tell whether you have a movie that is worthwhile or not. Regardless of genre. And that goes for directing, camerawork, score, etc.
I can compare the QUALITY of directing/script/camerawork of two inherently different movies, and do them justice.
A lasagne and a tomato soup are two completely different dishes. But I can compare them - and do them justice - regarding the freshness of the ingredients or simply regarding the temperature it has when served. A hot tomato soup made from fresh tomatos is simply a better dish than a cold lasagne out of a tin can.
But of course there are still those who like a cold lasagna. So if you enjoyed the Ghostbusters accident - have fun with it.

Hello, Im terminally retarded, so I need help finding basic info:
BAME Black, Asian, and minority ethnic
Also any actual link between the backlash and hiring white people instead of black ones?

[–]cztrollolcz 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Basically casting kinda leaked and they were casting a BAME as a white character, but you know polish is also a minority in the usa, so yeah, turn out, shes white: https://www.polygon.com/2018/10/10/17959594/netflix-the-witcher-series-ciri-and-yennefer-actress
[–]FountainLettus 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
So I see a perceived issue some people would have, but since she is polish, what is the issue now?
[–]cztrollolcz 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
The thought of casting a black person as a typically white character.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yes, I'm a big fan of the entire MCU so I fail to see how Captain Marvel is any issue other than the actress herself. Brie is retarded.
[–]YeOldeVertiformCity 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Oh. Simple.
This post isn’t criticizing the movies. It’s criticizing the discussions surrounding the movies.
So Captain Marvel might be amazing. It might be terrible. It doesn’t matter for the post. The point is that people talk about these movies as if its quality doesn’t matter.
Thats fair.
[–]cuntbag0315 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]they_be_cray_z 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No. See my other comment. I get that it's a trailer, so the goal is to provide limited info as a means to tease/hype. But this is different; the trailers I've seen provide no info about storyline.
[–]pajamajoe 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So it was a typical Marvel trailer? That is literally how they all are, why is it a problem now?
[–]they_be_cray_z 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The Avengers trailer for the next Thanos movie starts out by saying "we lost," and explains who they lost to. That in itself is more story info than the Captain Marvel trailers provide.
[–]pajamajoe 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Literally, the entire trailer is hinting at who she is and framing the movie of trying to figure out her past, if that isn't a plot then idk what the fuck you are looking for.

Male Captain Marvel was only in comics from 1967-1982. Of course he’s not as popular as Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man...
[–]they_be_cray_z -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Uhhh, Carol Danvers is famously known as “Ms. Marvel” a superhero that started as Captain Marvel’s love interest and got super powers. She was Ms. Marvel for about 30 years and became one of Marvel’s most popular characters. She even took over the “Captain Marvel” mantle in 2012.

[–]SnMan -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–]SnMan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I honestly don't get it. Why are they putting it on a pedestal as a feminist movie, like it empowers women and shows how powerful they are because she's rumored to be the strongest superhero. It's fake. Women can't be that strong or have super powers irl. It's not a gender thing, men can't either, but big deal. Men don't care because we're not interested in making our gender superior based on a fucking movie, we just want to be entertained without having a baseless political agenda forced on us.

White men are around 30% of the population. If the other, let's say 60% of the population to exclude small children and the elderly, went to see a "Diverse Movie" it would probably break a few records or, at least, be no. 1 in the box office for a while. Stop blaming "racist white men" when your movie/play/song whatever flops.

I feel like people shouldn't care if any men or women, regardless of race, like the film. Care about whether kids like it. The movie is literally not for adults.

[–]whoAreYouToJudgeME 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
She complained that critics are "overwhelmingly white and male" and wants more inclusitivity. https://www.indiewire.com/2019/02/brie-larson-minority-journalists-inclusive-captain-marvel-press-tour-1202043142/
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
“Am I saying I hate white dudes?” Larson said. “No, I’m not … [but if] you make the movie that is a love letter to women of color, there is an insanely low chance a woman of color will have a chance to see your movie and review your movie.” From that article she literally just said wanted to give opportunity to those in the same industry of reviewing movies outside of white men who dominate the industry. From that never says this movie isn’t for white males nor does she not care if they like it or not.
[–]whoAreYouToJudgeME -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
I wasn't able to find her exact words, but what she said seem to be very divisive. The left leaning outlets support her while right leaning trash her. I don't know if it's another clever marketing ploy a la Gillette ad. Edit: found the whole speech, no commentary. https://youtu.be/9e852S8RvlU
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
It was definitely to make herself look good but she is doing a good thing with inclusion but I don’t have a issue with that just people letting it sway their opinion on whether a super hero movie that hasn’t come out yet if it’s good or bad. It could be great could he trash I think it will land somewhere between mediocre and above average the hype for this film just hasn’t been there. But I’ll find out the following Tuesday of release when I get see it
[–]whoAreYouToJudgeME 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have to double check on her exact words. Everything I found online span up either for her or against her. As far as movie goes I will wait for reviews from my friends.
[–]whoAreYouToJudgeME 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Found her exact speech. She sounds condescending and argues that critic panel has to be reformed and only people that belong to a protected class should have any part in it. https://youtu.be/9e852S8RvlU
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Did you watch the video? She makes 2-3 sarcastic remarks that could be seen as condescending but that is her entire point she’s asking for reform but she never said only people of a “protected” class should be there she literally said she 9 people of minority groups women, women of color, men of color, for each of the top 100 movies it would have a big impact and represent our country more because white males only make up 30% of the US but 90% of movie reviews because not only white men enjoy Star Wars and would like to be on set and why should the majority of reviews for a movie made for women and women of color be from white men. That’s why she said she didn’t care what white men thought of the movie because it wasn’t for them. To say a man and women should have the same opinions on a movie made for women is absurd because men and women have different life experiences and that difference becomes greater once it’s a women of color and white man/any man in general or a disabled women and men in general
[–]whoAreYouToJudgeME 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, I watched the video. That preachy, condescending tone is how Gillette rubbed the people wrong way on this and other places. I understand she wants more inclusitivity in journalism, but she didn't mention the way she wants it to be achieved. The video implies that she wants either force retirement of "white dudes" or promotion of minority groups based on belonging to their group alone. Her remarks that she doesn't need a "40 year old white dude" to tell her about the movie is silly at best. She's in a public art anyone can criticize it let alone a person whose whole job to do only this. How would you like someone to question integrity of your work based solely on your socioeconomic status, gender and age? Yes, film critics are probably not fully representative of demographics of the country, but most proffesions aren't. Hollywood actors and actresses are possibly the worst offenders. I don't see Brie Larson stepping back from her role in a major Hollywood blockbuster for under educated, under employed, single mother of two, fat woman of color.

[–]Bmarquez1997 31 points32 points33 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I think the fact that if you're a white man and criticize any movie that has a diverse cast that you're doing it only because your "weak white male ego" was hurt due to not enough white men in the movie, instead of accepting actual criticism
Well this referring to captain marvel how can you criticize a movie that you haven’t seen yet cause she wanted to have a diverse group of interviewers interview her. And she and the movie get backlash for it? When has anyone ever attached a white male with that line about criticizing a movie with a diverse cast. This issue only arises cause of people shitting on the movie for her wanting to be interviewed by a disabled interviewer, women and women of color instead of solely white males
[–]Bmarquez1997 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't think it's specifically referring to Captain Marvel, but could be read in context of that whole situation. I agree, I don't think you should be able to review a movie you haven't seen yet, that doesn't make sense. IIRC the backlash from that movie isn't just that she wanted a diverse panel of reviewers, but because of a tweet she put out, something along the lines of "If you're a man don't go see Captain Marvel on opening weekend, leave room for the people the movie is actually meant for".
In general I've actually experienced this line of dialogue with my own mother and sisters, about the new ghostbusters movie. I personally didn't like it that much, just kind of felt like an "eh" movie. When we were talking about it after watching it I mentioned that, and they instantly jumped on the whole "oh you just don't like it because it was all women leads, it was hysterical and the best movie I've seen all year...", when in reality it was just an average movie that didn't really stand out as amazing.
In the grand scheme of things, I think it's how the movie is marketed. Some movies have done it really well, and as a result have done really well in the box office. For example, Wonder Woman. It was just marketed as "Hey, it's a movie about wonder woman, come see it", instead of some movies nowadays where the trailer (and marketing material) is all "hey look, we have a woman lead and a diverse cast and did we mention a woman lead?". I get that most movies have (white) male leads, but I feel like movies should be marketed for their plot and story, not for how diverse their cast is.
I mean, the title of the post is literally Ghostbusters.
[–]Bmarquez1997 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Correct, that's what made me think of my sisters and mother making those comments about Ghostbusters. I'm not sure if that's what the original tweet was referencing, or if that was just OP putting an example of a movie that fits the situation.
[+]RunswithIrony -12 points-11 points-10 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But the amount of butthurt from both this sub and OP couldn’t be more palpable.. God forbid women get a swing at big franchises without manchildren losing their shit and making up fake counter-criticism. /r/thathappened must have missed this one

You're literally doing the exact thing you're accusing them of "making up".
[–]RunswithIrony 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Please point out where I call someone white male trash and a crybaby over vague movie criticism.. Look at the other comment threads, a pretty big chunk of users are here bc they need a relevant place to take out their rage on women.

If the Ghostbusters remake had an all-male cast and was terrible, it would just have been seen as a terrible remake.
But no, it has an all-female cast, so all of a sudden it's a terrible remake because there are women in it.
As if that director and screenwriter would have made a good movie if only they'd cast dudes. It would have been differently bad, sure, but there's no way it was going to be good.
Grow up folks. There have always been lots of bad movies, diversity is not ruining cinema.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
They tanked a franchise by turning it into an female led SNL gimmick. It gets panned extra because Amy Pascal is crazy, forced Murray to do the movie through threat of legal action and Reitman out of directorial authority in favor of Paul Feig who literally said he wanted nothing to do with the original movie. Everything about this was a cash grab while giving the middle finger to the "boys club" Pascal and Feig saw the franchise as. Paul Feig's go to directing move was "improv and be funny", so he didn't even bother to come up with anything more than an outline as far as scripts go. People dislike that movie so much because they waited forever, albeit that's all on Murray, and when they finally make a new one they not only don't even try to resemble tone/atmosphere but hire a director that loathes the source material. On top of that nobody was happy with how Sony was curating their Youtube channel to remove rational non-interest and leaving anything bad. They also did the PR tour talking shit about existing fans. With the Sony emails leaking this was pretty obvious.
[–]A_Rabid_Llama 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Most of those major issues have nothing at all to do with the casting. It could have been an all male cast and 90% of what you just said would still hold true.
[+]eggsymon -7 points-6 points-5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's hugely important to represent a diverse range of people in a film. It's meant to entertain and reflect. This post isn't mens rights, its glossing over an important step that cinema is taking to stop it being dominated by rich white men.
[–]Altairlio 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The rich white man is making the film and making the money, the diverse casts is just to get chumps through the door
[–]Anders_A -4 points-3 points-2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Why do people tend to make up discussions with non-existing people? I mean, I do it in the shower all the time, but posting it on-line for everyone to see? No one has the opinion he is debating in the first place.

It's just low. Yes, there are crazy feminists. Every feminist is not crazy and I just can't handle this stupid shitty attitude.
I agree that the movie was unfunny and horrible. I like melissa McCarthy, she's hilarious. But i didn't laugh in the whole movie.
That being said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having female Ghostbusters. Literally nothing wrong with it. Yet I personally heard several people complaining about it.
So if you still can't see what's wrong with this post, fuck off
[–]Not_A_Greenhouse 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't think the post is saying theres something wrong with female leads. They're saying its wrong to only give a shit about forced diversity instead of a good story.
Yes its definitely circlejerked though.
[–]Retnaburn 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nothing wrong with female ghostbusters if they're not there just to push a narrative, which is what happened, and contributed to the movie being so bad.
I heard it suggested that they should have introduced them as purchasing the business from the original remaining Ghostbusters. That would have been a great way to include them, introduce the women, and explain the story so far. But no, women had to not only be the busters, they had to be the inventors, and discover ghosts, etc. Not to mention the big stupid pretty boy that was supposed to be Janine's counter character. Because we all know Janine was just there as a stupid prop woman sexual secretary, right?
They got everything wrong because this wasn't a movie, it was a propaganda flick.
You're retarded. The post is literally about not giving a shit about a movies diversity but if it's any good or not. It in no way implies women shouldn't be leads. Sony literally ran a PR campaign focusing on sexism as a way to sell their movie, and even curated their youtube comments to reflect this. The fact that they're women doesn't bother me at all, but there are about a dozen other things involved with that movie that do.

It made $229 million. I didn't see it bc it's not something I was interested in. I've never made something worth $229 million dollars and I seriously doubt all of you combined have either. You people are pathetic, so what if it had a diverse cast. How is that something worth complaining about? It made money. That's the point, to make money. What would y'all have rather happened here? What are you complaining for? Fucking losers.
