It is, as usual, nothing more then cherry-picking and not understanding the difference between self harm and suicide.

The numbers that are so often sited are the numbers of self-harm not for suicide attempts. These numbers are all forms of self harm combined regardless of the severity.

This inflates the numbers drastically as self-harm is especially prevalent in adolescent women. When the time between episodes is long enough it will be seen as a new attempt and will be registered as such. This inflates the numbers even more while the person that harmed themselves may have never had any suicidal thoughts or intentions.

Hanlon's razor suggests that we shouldn't attribute malice when something can be explained with incompetence. But somehow i really don't believe this is done because of them being this incompetent.

-It makes no sense for men to commit suicide 5 times more and have a lower attempt rate than women. If men kill themselves more, then logically the attempt should be greater among them as well.

- It's much easier to measure the suicide rate than the attempt rate, because you can't be sure if someone was really trying to off themselves, besides the good amount of people that tried on private and we dont know. But suicide is a confirmed fact, so it's easier to account for in statistics.

- Most women don't really try. They look for flawed means and know that most likely they won't die. They just want to get the title of "survivor", cry for help or some emotional manipulation shit they are good at.

First, i want to say this is my experience with knowing a few ppl that have attempted, failed or not, and a little research. I also want to point out that any attempt for any reason is a serious issue, and this gender battle of who has it worse by trying to dismiss the other is disgusting. When men bring up male suicide and the response isn't women deal with this as well, but women attempts are higher...... What I've seen with female attempts is exactly that. They are meant to be failed attempts for attention, at least on their first tries...... this isn't all, and men do it too, but on average, when men attempt, they mean to go. And although i said it's disgusting to say what's worse, I think the one that ends in more deaths is a slightly more serious issue...

It's an irrational take. Women attempting suicide at a higher rate literally has nothing to do with the fact that suicide is the number one killer of men under 45. It's about as rational as them countering by saying "Sure, but it rained last Tuesday in Amsterdam".

So why is this counter so popular? Because the person who says this believes societal support for people suffering from mental illness is a zero sum game and wants to make sure all of it goes to women. An apt demonstration of just how much they are truly interested in helping men despite some claims to the contrary.

But, fuck it, let's get into it.

Women use less fatal methods of suicide. From this we can conclude that men are just smarter and better at figuring out what lethal methods are - or - women are purposely choosing less lethal methods because it's more likely a cry for help or attention. The former seems pretty unlikely.
Suicide attempts cluster. Because women choose less lethal methods of suicide the same women can contribute multiple attempts. So really it's possible that the same % of men and women could have suicidal tendencies, but each man only contributes one attempt to the statistics because they only get the chance to try once.
We don't know the numbers on suicide attempts which are not recorded. Existing societal support structures are heavily biased towards women. A study was done that showed most men who commit suicide have gone to therapy but they disengage from an industry is not really helping them and is often hostile to them. This means that women who attempt are more likely to interact with institutions that create the statistics on attempts in the first place. This biases the numbers.

Feminist Counter 2: "Men are more violent". Another irrational one similar to the first. Men being more or less violence does not mean that we shouldn't find a way to address male suicide. In fact, if men have some kind of in built violence that makes them more likely to succeed at suicide, that only means it's even more important to find a way to reach and help these men quickly.

Feminist Counter 3: "Women don't want to leave a mess behind because they are conscientious". This is one you'll see from time to time about how men succeed in suicide because they shoot themselves with guns and women don't. It's particularly nasty as it finds a way to give women a tear men down for being selfish even within the context of them dying in record numbers from suicide. This one is easily countered by examining countries that have very strict gun control laws. In those countries men still commit suicide successful at epidemic rates and they have theu even have the good grace not to leave a mess behind.. usually by jumping off high places and getting swept away in the current.

Still, the person who uses any of these types of arguments/counters is clearly arguing in bad faith. There is no good faith argument that says the number one killer of men under 45 should simply be swept under the rug and given no attention because of x, y, or z. The good faith argument would be "We believe x, y, and z contribute to men committing suicide so that's what we should address first."

It raises the question of why are attempts even recorded in the first place? The cynic in me makes me think it is purely because women attempt more that they choose to focus on attempts, since otherwise recording attempts is meaningless - you can attempt 100 times and it have no bearing on your life because you failed every time.

The figure often quoted on suicide attempts is self reported and there are some problems with that fact

- the figure ironically suffers from survivorship bias, a dead person can’t tell you how many times they attempted suicide

- it’s very likely the male figure is much higher, again due to the societal pressures for men to bottle up and not tell people about these things (it's worth finding a source for this)

Then people tend to retort with "men have greater access to lethal means!" which of course isn't true. The figures are the same in countries where guns are illegal for example

It's a very complex subject, so making a competition out of it as soon as one statistical anomaly is brought up is pointless.

What needs exploring is what behaviour results in these statistics.

What reasons do the suicide victims have for killing themselves and what reasons are behind repeated failed attempts? How do those reasons affect people and how may they affect men and women differently? How may the use of suicidal actions differ along this dynamic? What differentiates victims with different results when they have similar backgrounds?

And many more questions that I cannot even begin to ask because I know fuck all about suicide in the first place.

Once that is all cleared up (and maybe somebody has done some of the research in extensive academic study), we can start addressing those cleared up things as the root problems resulting in statistical disparities instead of mentioning a disparity and then being moaned at for pointing out there is an issue somewhere.

It is a ton of issues. Some we commonly know, some we don't.

Ultimately, more attempts point towards a 'cry for help', which results in attention being showered on the individual. Its not hard to come up with a way that will get the job done. This does not happen to men though. If a guy does not succeed, its chalked up as a failure and he is socially isolated and people walk on egg shells around them.

Female suicide attempts are a cry for help or attention, and are statistically not nearly as severe as a male suicide attempt. Don't get me wrong, it's still bad. It's just that they often don't mean it. When a man tries to commit suicide, it's usually because they are FAR past the breaking point, compared to a woman making the attempt.

As well, when a woman brings up the stat that females attempt it more frequently (if less severely), that is also a cry for help, trying to redirect the conversation away from men and towards women.

To me, this speaks more to the why and how women attempt suicide, which is often more akin to a publicity stun for attention. When men attempt suicide, it's usually silently and alone. They aren't doing it for attention, so there is no call for help. It's far more likely that men still attempt suicide more, but most of their failed attempts remain quiet, unseen and unreported.

Well I feel suicide is a horrible thing regardless of gender and can indicate a number of things but many times stemming from grief a person has faced being too much for them and they have no way to deal with it and I think it's maybe a bit more understood why women have done it but for men it seems less understood. And the reasons men suffer sometimes get swept under the rug. I think men are given this sort of invincibility that isn't always so true. Guys can really hit rock bottom hard and fall apart. They aren't these stone faced people that society tries to paint. I'm a man with a big heart and I'm not ashamed to say things make me tear up a bit sometimes. But it's funny how the facade paints that it is weak but often it's another form of strength.

If you commit suicide does it count as attempted suicide as well?

Suicide Is a very serious topic and as someone who is contemplating Suicide, its extremely inconsiderate and disrespectful to those who died to treat it like it is a contest of who has it worse.

The truth is both men and women suffer from deteriorating mental health. Suicidal people do not choose or want to be suicidal.

Instead of making a pity for something that you never experienced, try to actually help raise mental health awareness so people who need help reach out without others shunning them for something they can't control.

If someone truly wanted to do something, they would do it. They wouldn’t stop at a handful of pills. They would stop eating pills the moment they die. They wouldn’t jump off a 2 story roof, they would jump off at 20 story roof.

Many attempts women have aren’t actually suicide attempts. They just get counted as such.

Men being violent was always for self defense and for self protection. I don't think men want to die by suicide to begin with.....too many people want men to be repeatedly revictimized and to not do something about it. People are against men setting boundaries to not let people bully them to the point of suicide. Women prefer to bully men to death but they don't want to be responsible for their deaths that is why men have a highest rate of suicide for not being able to stand up for themselves. Women only rule out on abuse, sexual assault, being bullied ect but suicide attempt is not genuinely a completed one so it should never be counted
