I see a lot of…. - resentment? Anger? Resignation? Maybe all of those - negativity directed towards the expectations and trappings of traditional masculinity. For example a lot of people here seem to very much dislike the need (real or perceived) for men to be the providers, protectors, be emotionally invulnerable, etc.

The consequences of traditional masculinity - male suicide rate being higher (ETA: due to things like the perceived “weakness” of mental health discouraging men from seeking help), pressure to have high-paying jobs, men historically working dangerous jobs, even men having to approach and pay for the first date - have all be discussed on here. So I’m wondering if you support men who don’t conform to the traditional expectations of masculinity.

Do you see traditional masculinity as the only valid way to be a “man?” (Yes/no and why/why not).

If you resent the expectations of traditional masculinity, are you supportive of the men who go outside those boundaries? (Yes/no why/why not).

Full disclose I’m very much of the camp that gender is a construct and that the traditional gender roles are fairly unfair for everyone because it doesn’t allow much room for personal choice without societal pushback. While there is nothing wrong, to me at least, with choosing to perform more “traditional” gender roles, I think it should be a choice and not an expectation. I don’t think we should force people to conform to or rebel against gender roles unless they want to. But I’m interested in your thoughts.

ETA: Yes I know women can and do reinforce gender stereotypes and traditional masculinity but I’m asking men how they feel about it right now seeing as you guys are the ones feeling it.

So please, before you comment to tell me actually women are the problem….I’m asking for opinions on how men see other men here. I am asking for your perspective on how you, a man, see it.
