Something I think is weird is the way people use "cute" and "hot". It seems most people conceive of "cute" as just meaning attractive but less so than "hot", but to me these are different kinds of feelings.

"Hot" to me is purely about sexual arousal. A woman being hot doesn't cause me any romantic feelings. Anything I'd want to do with her would only be in service of access to sex with her. I'd date her, but only because that means I get to fuck her. I'd cuddle with her because that means I get to feel up her sexy body.

"Cute" is what makes me want her to be my girlfriend. It's what makes me feel feelings of possessiveness. I don't want other men to have her, even if I can't have her myself. I'd feel jealousy if she was attracted to other men or even had been in the past.

I know people like to denigrate passport bros as simply using arbitrage to transactionally get more for their buck, but I think an underestimated factor that is relevant to this thread is that looking exotic for a given locale can throw off the conventional 10-point looks scale.

Indeed, I was on the other side of this dynamic when I first arrived in Latin America and was interested in a woman that all my local friends swore was ugly and beneath me.

The only time I’ve ever heard “looks don’t matter” is “when you’re old and in love for a long time” after it. Like to talk about how deep love in a relationship changes how you see the other person.

“Looks aren’t everything” is a more common mainstream statement. It’s accurate, and even studies on the halo effect tend to show that the halo effect mainly applies to first impressions biases. It doesn’t mean your personality/content doesn’t play into changing people’s initial impression of you.

If you fall into the mindset of “Oh I got the girlfriend/boyfriend/the spouse so I don’t have to care about looking good and can let myself go.” Then that’s lowkey disrespectful to your partner imo.

When I see women and men out there talking about how a big part in their motivation to stay active is because they’ve got a hot spouse, it’s one of those things where you realize.

Now this is a very complicated topic because of how aging works, stress, bills, time, etc. of course losing some of your looks as you age is normal. Again this is about mindset more than anything

That *mindset* to me just seems “I don’t value my partner nor do I think they can do any better”

But men and women don’t prioritize the same features in each other, so making everything about height is just male solipsism. For example the preference for women to have very feminine faces is pretty monolithic across all cultures, while women’s preference for facial masculinity is more varied and culture dependent. Or another example is how men across all cultures have very strong preferences for a low WHR in women.

Both men and women want beautiful partners, but we generally just don’t prioritize the same things.
