For the single moms out there, and the women that support them: Why?

Why are we still pretending that being a "strong single mom" is an achievement? Quite honestly, it’s a complete and total failure.

Raising a kid is arguably the hardest thing a person can do. So, why would anyone look at that task and decide to do it on the most difficult setting possible? It is completely absurd to voluntarily bring a child into a situation where they are already starting at a massive disadvantage. You are choosing a life of being broke, tired, and overwhelmed, and then acting shocked when it is hard.

And let’s be honest about the "absent father" trope. In the vast majority of these cases, it wasn't a mystery. These women chose to have children with men who were clearly never going to be stable or reliable fathers. You cannot ignore every red flag in the book and then claim you're a victim of circumstance.

It isn't "empowering" to have such low standards that you end up tied to a deadbeat for twenty years. It’s just a series of terrible decisions. Why is the desire to have a "mini-me" more important than actually ensuring that child has a stable, two-parent home? It’s selfish, it’s short-sighted, and we need to stop romanticizing it as anything other than a huge mistake.

Why? Why be a single mom? Especially in a country where abortion is legal? Especially when you know that the outcomes of single parent households are abysmal?
