If you, generic young woman, put up with a man’s shitty behavior for just the right amount or time, he’ll turn loving and honorable. It’s just a tiny little bit more nonsense and we swear it will happen! Lots of women think like this and it’s not just Disney. It’s most romance and a fair amount of women’s advice and literature, especially from the right. Indefinitely tolerating trash treatment is the basis for most pickme BS.

I always felt uncomfortable as a child discussing marriage and weddings. I grew up hearing that women were equal to men and could do anything they want, but legit did not understand why women were suppose to get excited about marriage. All the women's magazines my mom read made it seem like married women were all too fat (but needed endless recipes to make sure they made tons of good tasting food), were disorganized (but had to clean up everyone's messes), and needed to be told how to look, dress and entertain their families and friends.

I had no interest in playing a housemaid to a man, never.

True love as a concept is honestly the biggest con and form of propaganda for heterosexual relations. It’s primes women and girls to believe that love conquers all and that abusive dynamics are normal. I can’t even think of one Disney fairytale that doesn’t include some form of coercion or manipulation. We’re taught that it’s okay if a man lies to you or kisses you without consent because love conquers all right? It’s honestly why when I decide to have children I’ll never let them touch older Disney fairytales. I like the newer versions like brave, moana, and frozen because they teach autonomy and decenter men which is a much better message for future generations.

Prince Florian (Snow White) - kisses unconscious woman without her consent

Prince Charming (Cinderella) - is “in love” with a woman he can’t recognize either on sight or by talking to her, has to use a shoe as the only way to confirm her identity

Prince Eric (The Little Mermaid) - “falls in love” with Ariel without ever having a conversation with her

Beast/Prince Adam (Beauty and The Beast) - kidnaps Belle, holds her as a prisoner against her will, is verbally and emotionally abusive towards her until he love bombs her

Prince Edward (Enchanted) - self-centered narcissist

Prince Naveen (The Princess and The Frog) - lazy and entitled until he turned into a frog

Prince Ali/Aladdin (Aladdin) - lies to Jasmine and pretends to be someone else in order to “win” her hand in marriage

Prince Phillip (Sleeping Beauty) - love at first sight is always a red flag, although he did slay a dragon for Aurora

These are just literal princes as well. Prince Phillip is the closest to HV, minus the whole love-at-first-sight thing. Don’t get me wrong, I love a Disney movie, but the princes as a whole are not good examples. They look at and treat women as objects for the most part.

1000%. I felt so disillusioned when my ex-husband and I broke up. I had this narrative that we were true loves, meant to be, had this amazing love story!

I thought I had major problems when I was struggling with being faithful to him (I didn't cheat but had a wandering eye) but looking back on it now, he emotionally abused me and used me for sex which made my mind and body cry out for something else, someone who'd treat me better!

But because I was sucked into this true love shit, I thought there was something wrong with ME instead of the way I was being treated!!

My theory is that it was to keep women focused on seeking love instead of pursuing higher education and a good paying career. Sad that it still permeates into this day. The amount of women I've met that spew undying love for Disney is astronomical. That corporation is not something to revere.

Fortunately for whatever reason, I was raised to hate Disney shows. I think because my parents didn't want to take us to Disney World. I still had some fairy tale ideas, but when my daughter came into the world she was having none of that. She was born a realist. One time when I saw her talking to a boy, I asked her, "Who is he?" She said, "Oh he's just a stupid boy."

I always felt “different” from the Disney princesses, I guess because I was poor and an awkward looking child. Only beautiful princesses found their one true love and I didn’t look like them, and I didn’t have money. I went from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, didn’t even begin to grow into myself until at least after high school and I worked hard to transcend generational poverty and have my own money.

Cause they combined the Grimm’s brothers 1700’s stories (which tbh are pretty dark and macabre at times) with whatever mysoginistic bullshit they were feeding women in the late 30’s (Snow White), early 50’s (Cinderella) and late 50’s (Sleeping Beauty), and I think it just carried on from there.
