My father gave up all of his pension to my mother in return that she would never come after him again or get alimony. This was 3 years after the initial settlement. I watched my father (a well respected highly ranked in a government job) wear sweat pants with his business suit belt because the elastic was broken and he couldn’t afford to replace the sweatpants.

He would stress out if we asked for more food or just grabbed something from the fruit bowl because it meant he would go hungry. If he came to the family home to pick us up for the weekend we would tell him he couldn’t come in to pee (because mum had told us not to and also convinced us he hated us and he was a shit father). My father is a twin, I met my uncle after I turned 27 and saw a carbon copy of my father with the difference being he had a loving wife who encouraged him to be close to his kids (aka she wasn’t a POS) and it broke me, I had a movie style flashback realization that we had had the wool pulled over our eyes by our mother.

My father was and is to this day a broken man, he tried to recover from the divorce but he couldn’t. Happiness to him is going to work, coming home and cleaning up the house and getting ready for work the next day. Any time he gets time alone he gets that 1000 yard stare and you can see he’s not happy and he is a shell of what he was and what he could have been.

I’m not saying my father was perfect, far from it in fact but how was he supposed to recover when the judge awarded my mother the family home, 70% or his income until the youngest child was 18 (13 years and yes the amount stayed the same until the youngest was 18 it didn’t scale out) 13/14 days custody of the kids (and we were never encouraged to go to our dads on the day we were scheduled so we rarely did), only to come back a couple of years later and force him to hand over what was left of his money??? How?? The way it worked in my country too the government said my mother could earn up to $40k a year without her support package from my father being impacted. WTF??? She chose to not work and instead charged her children 50% of their income (with no cap) until we moved out to supplement her laziness.

Maybe it’s unhealthy, maybe it’s nots right to feel this way but I am yet to hear a single story of a man getting a lopsided divorce settlement (that isn’t Adele’s ex) with primary custody. So to this day when I read a story like this one barring abuse or similar I always feel for the man. She says he was manipulating her into a shitty divorce settlement? Maybe I read it wrong by but to me it sounded like he was down to pay the money in return for equal custody? Why the fuck should he pay to play.

Fuck this shit. All of it, fuck the court systems and fuck you Drew from South Brooklyn.
