Where I am, plumbers, carpenters and electricians are currently in demand and well paid, as are several other stereotypically male trades, such as truck driving. You can do quite well financially in this sort of work and as such it's no surprise to find more people moving into doing it, including more women.

As if it needs saying, nobody in their right mind has any problem with this.

It only becomes a men's rights issue when people start implementing positive discrimination in pursuit of some arbitrarily-chosen degree of representation. No, this is not code for excluding anyone, and I will happily defend anyone's right to do any job they choose - including men who may wish to attend a training course or join an apprenticeship and should not be excluded in favour of anyone else.

I think it would be nice to also see female construction workers, simply to show kids that everybody can be everything successfully with enough effort (though the socio-economic factors in a life can thoroughly mess with that, but let's not burden our kids with it yet). That your gender doesn't determine which jobs can be the right fit for you.

I think it would also help getting more perspectives across the genders, more handiwork knowledge into a different space. It can have many positive impacts.

No, because then men would have to pull for them and would have to work more. I work in a warehouse, and anything that like close to 10KG, they need help. Now imagine what would it look like if they had to do construction work.

Company where I work hires women, and philosophy is if the package is too heavy, ask for help, but the problem is, there are many packages and not so much time, so you will just run up and transfer the package to its rightful location with no help, because if you don't, you will probably get fired. And you can't say anything about it, because then you would have to go to HR to talk about your unruly behavior.

I worked on factories, back of restaurants, car wash, every job I never wanted, I had to try in order to make a living. Now I am happy with what I have acomplished with my hard work. Definitly, women should never envy men.

I have worked with the Trades for a long career and the few female Tradespeople I have worked with not only were competent, but had a better and less hateful view of men, because they worked daily with us. They saw us for what we were, not what they were told.

The way I look at it is; men and women in general have different tastes and interests, ask anyone in marketing. Why do feminists automatically assume that its a bad thing? When I was a cable guy we had 400+ techs at my company, not a single woman. I work for a coffee shop now and theres about 30 women here and I’m 1 of 3 males who work here, I know I didn’t face any discrimination applying and interviewing, I believe this job just happens to attract more female applicants, just like my cable guy job drew more male applicants, I don’t understand why people REEEEEE at muh glass ceiling when they don’t even consider the possibility that there isn’t large scale discrimination at foot

What happens in reality is that they get immediately promoted to a position that doesn't require heavy physical labor and are appointed to become your supervisor, but since they don't actually know enough to add any real value to the team, they just function as the cell phone and bathroom police and tattle to management every time someone says something politically incorrect. There are two women on this construction crew I see in my small town. Sure it's an anecdote here, but I have yet to see them do anything construction and instead they are always the ones holding the signs directing traffic. But let's be real, outside of that and operating machinery, there's very little women can do as well as a man in a construction job. I don't want some 90 lb woman swinging a sledge hammer. I want Joe who's 6'5 and weighs 300 lbs to swing that shit.

Women can do pretty much everyone a man can do in construction... part of the problem is that only a small fraction of those in construction actually do anything other than being the token woman/distraction on site. It's not always their fault, there is still a lot of sexist bias in the industry where management want to seem as though they are being inclusive but put them in non-consequential positions... flag-person, time-keeper, admin. work, etc... The only in engineering type jobs have I seen more diversity and even there it's been slow to happen. I think that if we as men want real gender equality those of us in a place of influence should lead the way in making it happen, I know female welders, brick-layers, steel-workers, crane operators, etc... so if as men we don't contribute to make it happen we can't blame feminists for everything they say. I can't stand feminists because their solutions are nothing more than entitlements but there is a bit of truth in what they are complaining about.

I work in the O&G field, we have a manufacturing shop that in the last decade has had 3 female workers out of over 150 male workers, only one has stuck around for more than 3 months and she is a machinist who is a beer drinking, biker who rides a Harley to work every day and will talk shit just as hard as the rest of the guys.

Our HR constantly tries to hire women for our shop to meet some diversity quota and they just can't get female workers who want to work in a hot shop working 12hr days lifting heavy shit and using industrial size tools.

Honestly I think it'd be great. I think what stops some women is that when they enter male dominated fields, they are not treated very welcoming. I've seen it everywhere.

A woman who was a trucker and there were thousands of men telling her she couldn't do it because she's not strong enough.

Of course this isn't the case everywhere. I've seen some be extremely welcoming on the flip side. But from a women's perspective, sometimes the threat of harassment is a deterrent.

And then there are also cases like me who literally couldn't because I'm 5ft and no muscle haha so sometimes we aren't cut out for the job.

Given I am not a construction worker, I would prefer that it remains as it is. I can't imagine how feminine they could be as construction workers. The field is pretty tough. It makes you a certain way. How many men would be willing to marry them. Maybe I'm wrong but I wouldn't. Also I would prefer for men to take the rough jobs and women to take the more chill ones, as long as the ones doing the less demanding jobs appreciated the others. Also there wasn't any discrimination. That's overall though. I wouldn't have problem with any individual cases.

Men, and I say this as a man, are distracted by women. I'm not saying men are bad because of this, or that they shouldn't be distracted, but...we are. Deal with it.

Construction is a dangerous job and if you are not paying attention to your surroundings, people will get hurt. Also, it's probably a good idea to keep the carriers of the next generation safe and secure. I'm not saying "lock women up", but there's a simple mathematical reason putting women in dangerous positions is a bad idea.

I'M NOT SAYING WOMEN ARE NOT CAPABLE OR DO NOT DESERVE A CHANCE TO PROVE THEY CAN DO CONSTRUCTION.

I think that gender representation is important in nearly every field. It normalizes gender representation and increases gender socialization, which I believe to be very healthy for the maturation of people in general. It's an important time for gender representation. I think women are mostly concerned that work places in typically male dominant roles are not safe for them, and I think that needs to change. There's been a marked transition in the 20th century that has given women individuality, rights and powers that have historically been barred from them, and I don't think that men have completely adapted to a world where women are their equals as individuals, especially financially and in the work place, and gender representation forces men with internalized patriarchal expectations to accept women's rights as an individual. I don't deny that and I welcome that.

But the only way I want to see more than 10% female workers constructing a building that matters to me is if the construction company is a passionate family business and nearly all the women are daughters in the family. A healthier Hannah Wallen would be an amazing asset to any construction crew, but barring a big family operation, you'll never get over 10% women without lowering the bar for the women because the company is about proving a point, not providing great work.

I do not have a problem with women who want to get into construction. Hard working women rock. I have a problem with the women who get hired by companies (and the companies themselves) which go out of their way to get women into male dominated fields.

I live in the Southern rural area , see a few women in the construction zones , not many. Mostly holding flags directing traffic from my observation.

My career is nursing , we see very few males in our field that do well. At my facility now , we have no male nurses working at the moment .

In my rural area individuals seem to stick more to gender role type positions, of course my father did construction also before having his own business, he never encouraged me to learn the trade of construction. Always encouraged me to further my education through college.

Personally i think we should have more women in construction. It's a dangerous job where a lot of guys get injured or even die, if we start making more women join then perhaps society would notice all the women being injured/dying and would try to opt for safer construction practices.

Plus I don't see it as fair that men have to do all these physically strenuous jobs while women get to stay inside an air conditioned office. Granted not all women have that luxury, and not all men have hard labor jobs like that. But when looking at the majority there's definitely a bias as to where women get to work and where men get to work.

I don't think women being underrepresented in construction is as impactful as men being underrepresented in felds like education. A building doesn't care who built it. A kid does care who teaches him. But maybe I'm not considering a larger picture there.

Some women couldn't keep up with men in physically demanding trades, so artificially inflating their numbers for PC might put people at risk, or at the very least impact productivity. So maybe there is some calculus there. If the injuries resulting from women are less than the injuries the men they replaced would have sustained, it's a win-win? Or, maybe we worry less about who is doing the jobs, and more about making the jobs safer!

I don't have anything against it. But I think unless they really know what they're doing, they wouldn't be as efficient with physical labor as men because of our natural strength differences.

Part of my work is to deliver stuff to construction sites. I see very few women there and they are always in one of three categories: Foremen or other bosses, drivers of trucks/cranes/machines or standing besides the men working with their hands, doing almost nothing. Sometimes they maybe lift a straw with one of their hands or hold something out of the way so the men using their body strength can work more efficiently. I am all for real opportunity but I really can't see how there can be room for a higher ratio of females in that line of work.

No, I would not "like" to see it. Not "opposed" to it either, as long as they're willing & competent. This petty desire for 50/50 representation in all fields is actually quite harmful.

I do see a lot of females on construction sites. They'd usually wear high heels and skirts, and point at random shit and nod their heads when speaking with their bosses.

A female cousin of mine was an electrician, and a pretty damn good one at that. Harassed by male coworkers, not realizing she could give it back as good as they could dish it out. They then accepted her into the pack because her shit talking game was on point. Master electrician now and killing it.

I’m an Architect and spend a lot of time on job sites. In the US there are actually a lot more women in construction than that statistic would lead you to believe (nor do I think it is accurate at all).

First, there are many contractors now owned by women. It’s mostly so they can apply for minority status so they can work on government jobs. Some of them are great and involved; some are ‘in name only’.

I know what your going to say. ‘How can that be legal, it’s discriminatory?’ It is discriminatory and its legal. Remember it’s not illegal if you exclude males, especially white males.

In fact many cities will ‘encourage’ you to ‘look beyond woman or hispanic owned to meet their minority contractor requirements’ (in other words: chicks and Mexicans don’t count you need darker brown tones). It’s an ‘open secret’.

It’s also disgusting and if I were a black contractor I would hate that policy because it would make me and my work look bad. We’ve got some great black owned contractors in our area that HATE the program and refuse to ‘officially’ register with it.

Next you have women laborers. Most of them are going to be Hispanic but there are others in there too.

I’ve seen lots of women doing demo, cleaning job sites, directing cranes, standing on stilts doing drywall and painting work. I think a lot of them are not counted because they are either day labor or paid in cash (see Hispanic) to keep them ‘off the books’. It’s illegal as heck but they don’t work for me, or even the GC so there is little we can do.

Is it 50/50? Not by a long shot. But I would hazard the actual percentage is closer to 10-15% female if you include all the people actually working on a job design to finish.

I even work with some highly competent and competitive female engineers in all areas.

I’m not sure if any of them are feminist. I’d think it would have been obvious by now if they were… seeing as the feminist Architects I’ve met can’t go a conversation without saying something derogatory about males.

Biology of men and women differ a great deal, both physically and psychologically. Feminists downplay or outright deny them because those biological facts are incompatible with their agenda of equality.

Feminists are hostile towards any inequalities and disparities beetwen men and women, like percentage of men and women in managerial positions, percentage of men and women in congress etc. Whenever they see inequality in such areas they automatically conclude that those disparities are results of oppression and patriarchy.

The reality however, is that not all disparities are bad. Our biologies differ, which is why men are better at some things and women are better at other things. Its not sexism but biological reality. It makes sense why there is more men in physical jobs, they are stronger. There is no reason to push for equality in this area, it serves no purpose, aside from satisfying feminists. Same goes for quotas in managerial positions, men make up majority of managerial positions because they tend to be more competetive and make up better leaders. Pushing stuff like quotas to artificially create equality there goes against natural order and results in negative outcomes.

We should all accept that not all disparities are bad, some are caused by our biologies.
