He should’ve never dated her in the first place. It’s not like she was a radically different person when they met. That’s always something that’s been weird to me. If you know someone’s lifestyle isn’t something you’d be able to jive with long term, don’t engage with them. Just leave them alone instead of dating them and trying to change them.

Just because u use the term “boundaries” doesn’t mean those boundaries are healthy to have in a mature relationship. If I chat up and ask out my local baker, I’m not going to say my boundaries are not dating ppl who use lots of flour. Imo that was him trying to get somebody he could control. Of course it’s nice to say that somewhat up front, but I see it as a filtering device to get into a relationship where he has all the power. What’s also getting lost in the shuffle here is he wanted to control who could be in her friend group and went as far as not wanting her to be around anybody he deemed weren’t in stable places. It all just reeks of him trying to be super controlling. Just because he uses the language of emotional intelligence doesn’t mean they his boundaries aren’t very strange.

People keep focusing on the fact that he presented it as a stay or leave situation as a positive. That’s not a positive. What’s the alternative? Physically restraining her? What does it take for people here to call something controlling?

If someone says I need to control your friendships and public image in order for our relationship to continue that is controlling. You don’t have to literally hold someone down to be controlling.

He was a fucking idiot is what happened. She broke up with him. He is spinning things. (eta: as in, the relationship was over before it finally ended because of this very same singular problem)

He couldn’t handle being with someone beautiful. She is a surfer, of course she’s going to have fit, attractive friends and lead the same sort of lifestyle. She did this BEFORE he ever knew her and he slid into her DMs BECAUSE of a surfing picture.

If you cannot handle being with an attractive woman, do not date one. He is extremely insecure and projected all of his own shortcomings onto his girlfriend. He effectively expected her to rearrange her life to provide comfort for his insecurities, which she didn’t give him—they were already there. Jonah Hill is not an attractive guy and has spent most of his career in fat friend / comic roles. I get that that takes a toll, but none of that was her fault. He was controlling and overbearing.

I think a boundary is something between yourself and someone. How someone directly interacts with you. Someone posting themselves on instagram or choosing how they want to dress is not a violation of a boundary. There’s a difference between saying “I don’t like when you do something” and “I don’t like when you do something TO me”.

Yeah he’s controlling telling her what to wear, what to post, and who to hang out with, realistically has nothing to do with him. He met her doing all those things. If it makes him feel insecure about something then it’s up to him to fix his insecurities or not date someone who makes him feel insecure instead of trying to get someone to stop being themselves in order to pacify him.

Jonah was wrong about 2 things. He shouldn’t have told her she can’t post swimsuit pics and he shouldn’t tell her she can’t talk to other guys. To his credit he says several times in the texts that maybe she should break up and get with a guy who doesn’t have his “rules” and is more in synch with what she wants to do.

However most of the texts were really just Jonah Hill showing himself to be a pathetic, low-self esteem insecure and moody guy. However the texts are taken out of context and obviously meant to be private. If any one of us had text messages or private conversations when we were trying to voice to a partner our insecurities all of us would come off as the most cringe, embarrassing person ever.

What's interesting to me is the backlash. It just proves how toxic and unaccountable some people can be when it comes to respecting men's boundaries.

Jonah wasn't controlling in the slightest. He's clearly established reasonable boundaries that she wasn't comfortable with, so he ended the relationship. He's allowed to establish boundaries, she's allowed to disagree with them, and either are allowed to end the relationship over it.

The only disrespectful thing going on here was her posting this and acting like a child.

His boundaries are a bit much and come across as insecure. In my opinion they are somewhat unreasonable too, given her existing hobbies.

But he's stating what he wants clearly and not trying to be passive aggressive or manipulative. He says what he needs in a relationship and that she can take it or leave it. People are unreasonable all the time, especially in matters of love. She can decide for herself whether she will accept his terms to continue the relationship. He says he would respect her choice regardless and I don't see any reason to not believe him.

I think everybody would be better off if they communicated this openly. Maybe without being so whiny and insecure, but still.

Blasting this out on the internet is absolutely shitty. Nobody is proud of everything they've ever said in private when they were emotional.

This is what guys are talking about when they say women use men's most sensitive and secret things against him in the end and it's better to just never open up. Would it be better if he kept this inside, tried to manipulate her, and eventually blindsided her with a blowup and/or breakup?

He's was being open about his insecurities and what he needs and then she does this. I'm not saying this always happens but it's things like this that tell us it's not worth the risk.

These controversies are always kind of dumb, because we have no idea what happened behind closed doors. Like what did her "boundaryless inappropriate friendships with men" actually entail? What kind of friendships with her former wild friends is he talking about? There are answers to those questions that would make him a jealous control freak, and answers that would make her insane and him completely reasonable. That said one would think she chose the exhibits that make him look the worst, and the fact he doesn't come across as at emotionally abusive in those tweets definitely doesn't help her case. Also some of the media are predictably blatantly misleading in their coverage, making it sound like it was only about posting bikini pics, or that he forbade her from working with men, etc...when that's not at all what the tweets showed. Great, now I just wasted time writing a paragraph about a celebrity I didn't know about it and don't care about!

I saw a comment in the popculturechat thread that said he hates women now because he grew up feeling fat and ugly. In a thread of women calling him an incel, it was hard to put my finger on what kind of immense societal pressure would make him base his worth around sleeping with women.

So much shit about men trying to find women to control, give me a break. People are hypocrites. Hypocrisy does not a sociopath make. And let's not talk about how many times I've heard women joke about "fixing" men or needing "projects."

I never heard about this story, but guys like Jonah Hill have so many options. He may not be a handsome leading man like his A-list buddies Pitt and DiCaprio (though when he slimmed down he revealed that he wasn't bad looking either), but he is still a famous multimillionaire (net worth of $70M) and should therefore not waste his time with women who are incompatible with his values - he could easily find a woman whose values are aligned with his.
