There are requirements for the draft. They have to pass the physical standard - something the military itself estimates would disqualify almost 80% of young men - and still be fit at the end of boot camp - something that disqualifies 10-ish% of current recruits, and would certainly delay or eliminate deployment of many drafted ppl. Then there are exemptions for men whose absence would cause significant hardship to their dependents, men who've lost a parent or sibling to the military, religious leaders, politicians, and ppl with skilled jobs that can arguably do more good at home. Then there's conscientious objection, which relegates a person to a role away from the front. Instituting the draft would not mean all the men get shipped out.

Technically, it's possible to suspend the standards for the draft, including the requirement that they be a man. But it's too wasteful to justify until/unless there's literally nothing left. Just pouring resources into ppl who aren't capable of turning them into success. At that point, it's a death rattle, and there's no credible threat of legal accountability. Not doing it would prob be less risky than not registering is now... which is basically a non-issue.

I live in a country where only men have to register for draft

I bet you live in a country with an unsustainably low fertility rate, too. Although it is theoretically possible that your country might end up in an existential crisis that requires activating a draft, it is a certainty that it will end up in an existential crisis if the fertily rate continues to decline below replacement rate.

Only women can make babies. It requires physical labor, health risk, energy, and resources for more than two years for a woman to produce two babies. And, to achievement replacement rate and population stability, women who are not infertile need to have a minimum of 2. It is a totally gender imbalanced service that only women can do. So how long would your country's mandatory military service be? Would it be 2 - 3 years?

In case it isn't clear, I think the "unfair" gender assigned "national service" is actually more of a burden for a nation's women as it is a service and a labor requried regardless of peace or very rare existential war. That said, if you want to argue that women who choose not to have children should be expected to be eligible for a draft in the event it is needed, I'm ok with that (this would assume something like the draft in the ROK that allows young people to choose when to serve between the ages of 18 and 30).

By the way, if I see your user name pop up in some argument about how women don't belong in the military/are too weak/blah, blah, blah, I will be very dissappointed.

War. War always changes. We're quite far from tons of legionnaires marching on foot through continents, and even from trench warfare where morons shout "charge" and people with bayonets pop up from trenches to get mowed down. Just look at russia invasing ukraine and compare population numbers.. We're in the era of nukes and stealth bombers were a thing literally more than 30 years ago. The skills required by average soldiers are also far more advanced. In simple words, advanced countries with advanced military don't need anymore massive armies in the sense of high percentage of population as soldiers. You need "just" "few" highly trained life long professional soldiers. Countries with nukes especially or part of large alliances aren't worried of being invaded with boots on the ground. Just look at what happened just now in venezuela..

Should contemporary warfare for countries like usa still have needed so many soldiers, you can be absolutely sure you'd still have the draft.

Should the government fail to acquire enough volunteers at critical levels, some form of draft, conscription, coercion will take place.

Mens rights activists like to pretend they have some risk of being drafted (despite only having a paperwork obligation in real life) because they need to claim that men are carrying some special risk in order to get to the part of the argument where women lose the right to vote.

You've managed to highlight the reason in your last few words. It had nothing to do with their race and everything to do with their economics status. Also, FYI, none of your links provide data for respective class or race rates of those DRAFTED. Two thirds of those who served were volunteers, so flat mortality rates are irrelevant anyway. Yeah, that’s right now a lot of things were extremely expensive at one point and became cheap over time. Remember plasma tvs use to be 10-20k in the early 00s. Now ones better then those and in bigger sizes can be purchased for 400 bucks.

Crazy to think about but when tech moves it moves and what is expensive now will be dirt cheap later on. Which is why I believe it’s probably a decade and a half away, once we get there it won’t be an issue. Hell if we were to continue to work with china they could probably get some at a decent rate right now, since they basically have free servants over there.

Also I'm not sure if you know our u.s. government but they love spending money on things like war. So whatever price you think is too high is just right for something like that. Having trouble finding money and cost cutting, typically happens when they are looking to save money for what the citizens may need, lol. Even still I do think its a while off currently.

Canada does not rely on the us to protect us. We have a damn good military, it's why when you called for NATO allies for Afghanistan and Iraq we were the first ones there and in the most dangerous zones. Don't fall for the propaganda of the president.

We also do not have selective service since 1945 and I highly doubt it will be enacted in the future as that would be full political suicide for any politician and their party, since large we do not support it. Military service is a chosen path here for a wide variety of reasons for men and women.

Never claimed the world was peaceful, I know full well what the war is, I come from a family of Holocaust survivors. And while I won't turn down men choosing to protect me from something and I'll be grateful to them, just like in grateful to the women choosing to protect me and the men in military service or public service jobs

Selective service is an easy form you fill out, normally when you get your drivers license for the first time. That's it. That's the whole obligation. It's a simple, unobtrusive paperwork requirement.

The United States does NOT have a draft. In fact, we have the opposite - we have an anti-draft. We have an explicit, federal law that says the US government can't draft people. The only way to change this would be for Congress to pass a new law, and there's no reason to assume that wouldn't be gender neutral.

Insecure men sometimes lie and say that they are subject to a draft because they want to claim that being a man involves more hardship than it actually does. This is an exercise in stolen valor. These men are pretending that they made a sacrifice they have not made in order to get credit they do not deserve.

If you see a man claiming to be subject to the draft, and he was too young to fight in Vietnam, please make sure to call him out as the military imposter that he is. The real sacrifice made by real soldiers serving our country (both men and women, and all volunteers) shouldn't be diluted by little boys on the internet LARPing as soldiers.

So abolish the draft, or make women part of it too.

I’ll never understand why this is such a sticking point for everyone. I’m fully in favor of being draft eligible, I think it’s only fair, but I also have no control over whether or not that changes beyond voting for people who want to change that. Revoking my right to vote, on the basis of something I have zero control over, is straight misogyny and entertaining this idea is genuinely horrific. By that logic, disabled people shouldn’t be able to vote either. Do you see the problem there?

Debates like this are so clearly in poor faith. Revoking women’s ability to vote on the grounds that we aren’t draft eligible is dumb. Because a lot of the female voter base…. have no say in the draft and have never met someone who was drafted.

It could happen at any time? 🙄 You act like the events leading up to a draft are truly random, but they’re not we actually have an idea of the likelihood of whether or not a war is going to break out to the point of men being drafted these things they don’t just pop out randomly. We haven’t had a draft in over 50 years and it’s not likely to happen anytime soon based on the current geopolitical state. Not only that but even when the draft did happen all the way back in the 1970s. The more women gave birth that year than men were drafted! That is even if a draft happened tomorrow. It is very unlikely that it would impact the majority of men. It would probably be a very small percentage of men that actually end up being drafted into combat.

Anyways, my point is for the last 50+ years there has been no draft. Somehow society has managed. There is no way that women could not have any over for 50 years in our society still be standing. Women must continuously bear children a generation of men can live and die never being drafted.

Well obviously, I’m saying it can start the process that leads to there being a draft. Me saying that isn’t saying they will just randomly start knocking on doors out of nowhere. Of course there is a process just like with most things, let alone something that major.

BTW when people are saying that, they are basing it off of the conflicts that seem like they could lead there in today’s time. So, it is always possible which is why they still have men sign up for the selective service.

If there was no possibility of it ever happening, then that would’ve been discontinued long ago. So, it’s still possible we are just hoping they don’t have to do it again. Also, yes back in the 70s that was true but it has decreased a lot since then, not only that but the risks aren’t the same as it was 50 years ago either.

So that will likely be factored in is all I’m saying, especially if she doesn’t want to be a mother in the first place. All will depend on how desperate they are for soldiers, which there is no way of really knowing beforehand.

So really only the mentally or physically disabled are safe from being drafted, if they were to ever include women. Also, yes, we have managed but that is because there was no need to, since there were no other world wars that have taken place.

Well the draft is also less common and so is military service. About 80% of women become mothers by age 50 nowhere near that amount of men are drafted or even willingly serving in the military.

Why is not a good basis? Can any civilization or society be maintained without women risking their lives to birth kids? No. So just like we can’t have a society without a military we can’t have one without women having kids. And the reason women historically weren’t drafted to begin with was because they were having kids, a woman of fertile age could become pregnant at any time so it makes no sense to have her on the front lines. People always want to act like some massive favor was given to women but really it just didn’t make sense to send pregnant people to fight wars and back in the day women were pregnant often or nursing.

I don't know where you're getting your stats, but they're wildly wrong, certainly for the UK and Europe. In the UK, around 1.25 million military deaths occurred in WW1 and 2 combined. The peak maternal mortality rate was around 3600 per year.

Between 80 and 100 million people were killed during WW1 and 2. 4-5% of the global population were slaughtered during those 2 world wars. Deaths during child birth are nothing comparable to that. Not to mention that the trauma of fighting in a war is incomparably worse than child birth, much less being injured and dying.

Men also risk their lives doing a thousand other physically laborious and dangerous jobs. The comparison you're looking for doesn't include war. At least hundreds of men died per year doing regular jobs during the 20th century. War is above and beyond anything, it's almost literal Hell.

Why are you comparing the war to just one year of maternal deaths? In the 20th century from 1900 to 2000 more women died bearing children than men died in combat. That is what I said and that is a fact. I specifically mentioned combat and you bring up civilian deaths which would also include women anyways. Many women died as civilian casualties in wars as well as children. I specifically did not bring up civilian deaths for this reason but shoot if you want to go there then the death toll for women would be higher if you include civilian casualties. In WWII specifically civilian casualties grossly outnumbered combat casualties so much for war being only a danger to men in combat.

Comparing one year of deaths to multiple years of war is nonsense also men weren’t dying in droves in combats for the last 100 years there were 2 major wars that had extremely high deaths but also many years of peace with barely any deaths. So when you add it all together more women end up dying in childbearing than men in combat.

Why would you feel confident of that during these times? Honestly if I was a betting man at the rate we are going I would put my money on some form of the us draft being reinstated in the next 100 years. It wasn't that long ago that people were drafted... my living father was drafted.

Now we have a lowering birth rate, increasing conflict, nato falling apart, climate scientists predict changing shorelines that will cause mass migration, military spending in many first world countries rising due to the times (canada, japan, much of Europe), debt just getting to the point where interest payments are the size of US GDP and I wouldn't be shocked to see USA using its military to seize foreign assets for money. US military reporting recruitment levels are way lower than their targets. Honestly I'm not sure what indicators aren't pointing toward the need for a draft to come back right now.
