What are your thoughts on today's Women's March on Washington?

My initital thought was that it appears, as a nationwide event, to be about 3x-4x the size of the tea party protests in 2009.

Thats not significant if this is a one off event. If, like that protest, this is a start of a "movement" or "resistance" of one form or another it bodes very badly for Trump/Republicans.

We'll see.... for me any significance will only be apparent once we know where it goes from here, or whether it was purely a one off with no/limited followup.

Watching people protest the results of a democratic election is pretty embarrassing, and I'm not sure if it's better or worse when it's in a country that didn't actually vote for the US president.

The irony is that most of the people involved seem to be incredibly privileged people who've come out to posture about how much more enlightened they are than the people funding their lifestyles. They don't have the real worries that people who can't put food on the table do, but Trump is a godsend to them, as now they've defined him as a Trigger Golem - the personification of all the trivialities and hurt feelings in the world. I have major misgivings about Trump, but I find myself increasingly wanting him to succeed just to spite these assholes.

Can you relax. It was a peaceful protest motivated by valid political concerns. It made people feel good, and provided a bit of fun in the midst of an inauguration that is understandably scary to people. It wasn't meant to change anything immediately, it was meant to be a loud statement of solidarity, and to rally/demonstrate support for the progressive agenda - with that in mind, it was a huge success. The global turnout was massive.

We had one of those cringeworthy marches in London and even the BBC News comments on that shit were mocking it. BBC News is very biased against Trump, so for even its readers to mock this crap it is pretty hilarious.

No idea why the fuck anyone living in the UK went out to march against the democratically elected president of another country anyway. None of our fucking business.

My black friends who went only went because their white feminist friends dragged them.

Overall my friends who went had a good time and felt the solidarity with fellow women and intensity of the crowds.. But they (black women) couldn't relate to all of the white women crying over Trump 😭. Like we (black ppl) knew that America has a culturally nationalist white underbelly on the brink of full on tribalism. I think white liberals just think many blacks identify with BLM for their health and that there aren't legit reasons why that movement became a thing. LGBT women: our rights are just as important

I'm proud of the MEN and WOMEN who were out there protesting.

I'm stoked to see the large number of men who care about equality and don't have their egos threatened by it.

I agree with the issues being highlighted and am happy seeing our society band together to say it loud.

I didn't have the best time trying to cross the street with kids at the time, but it was an awesome protest.

I don't know really about the one in Washington but the one in London was idiotic. A couple of London based friends went for their jobs (one is a police officer, one is a journalist) and said it was shit and filled with far left sjw nuts who s ideas for fixing things were laughable. Especially when Brexit could put us in a difficult spot economically and Trump has promised a great trade deal and we'd be top of his list, whilst Hillary said we'd be bottom. As a Brit think we should just shut up about our dislike for him at least until that deal is signed and done.

Right now I do not think/feel one way or the other about it. Trump may do things that specifically inspire people to protest so it is not as if that will be the last one. I did my usual Saturday woman things, go to gym catch up on laundry and a few chores and meet a couple of lady friends to go to a local hockey game.

I saw a lot of commentary about people saying protest is stupid blah, blah. That certainly never stopped tea party people who were often also protesting vague things. The difference is their protests were much smaller. Protest can have an impact on policy when the protest is specific and addresses grievances, ie Civil Rights protests in the 50's/early 60's and the anti war movement during the Vietnam war.

One protest rarely changes anything so I don't get that comment either.

I don't see how the protest showed women are immature because they look for excuses to quit work and compalin about things, not really sure what OP was talking about there. Like it or not in a country with democratic freedoms and rights, people can protest. Generally speaking the problem is somebody actually likes what is being protested.

Trump could potentially do all kinds of crap that make people want to protest but he has not yet. I did not vote for him and I am not a fan, I think a lot of the undercurrent in these particular protests were a way to say they weren't happy he won and banding together just made people feel good.

I live in Trumplandia so people here seemed pretty upbeat on inauguration day.

Really don't know. They have abortion, equal wages(this can be debated, but a arguably bad study and anecdotal evidence isn't enough proof). All in all, the march is indirect in what it wants, and I think this question existing in a debate is good enough to prove that this march seems like there isn't a lot of direction. Take a look at MLK's occupancy on Washington. It was very direct that they wanted to be equal to whites, and it was clear they were not equal to whites because of the blatant segregation. What proves women aren't equal to other groups?

I spent a summer working for a provincial chamber of commerce and at one point somebody decided we would have a "rally" outside some government office to protest against some new bullshit law. It was the most retarded thing: a bunch of guys in business suits protesting. I felt stupid and my impression was that the other guys just wanted to get it over with so they could get back to making some coin.

And I wonder about those 500,000 women: what do the men in their life think of this? And those that drag their kids along and despicable.

Trump personally hasn't done anything much yet, but these are protests based on what he said he would do in office.

The implications for planned patenthood are a fairly direct and pressing issue for feminists. Coupled with statements he's made about women, I think it's incredibly understandable that these peotests exist.

Glancingly appears that the anti-Trump movement has branded itself as women's movement, which seems strange, but then again maybe they were organized by the Clinton supporters. As I support the Roe v. Wade decision, I am worried of an abortion rollback.

That said I don't think Trump is a substantial threat to any other actual women's issue so that's the only thing I'd be supportive of. Otherwise the march just became an intersectional nightmare and not particularly representative of 'women' collectively.
