sometimes men fail to compliment their partners or give feedback because they are afraid it will get to their heads. I have seen this in action, usually with women going through dieting/ gym regimes and regaining their looks. sometimes these made men feel really insecure in the marriage, afraid that now that she's "good looking" again she has more chances to leave him.

the massive weight gain/ weight loss is a sign that something is going on, usually a sign of dissatisfaction. it isn't healthy thinking one has the upper hand in the relationship, that's not an equal relationship but usually the mark of some form of abuse going on usually emotional abuse.
