Think about how men don’t wear engagement rings because they are not taking themselves off of the market. They give dowry/engagement rings to ensure that a woman does not take any more “offers”.

This:

A. Financially incentivizes him to follow through and not waste her time.
B. Compensates her for her lost opportunity should he decide to break up.

There is some truth to men having more time to become fathers (although the risk of fathering offspring with genetic abnormalities increases with paternal age) so it is way less harmful to THEM to string women along and not commit.

Came here to regain my sanity after seeing the comments of this post. Seems like men shaming women for wanting to be with someone who not only can afford a nice ring to propose with, but WANTS to spend that money on you to show you that he cares and chooses something you'll be happy with for the rest of your life. It requires not only financial stability, but effort on the part of him to know her tastes and make a nice choice. All the comments about "I got her a placeholder and let her pick her own," to me shows low effort. It's not that difficult to get to know her jewelry tastes and, I don't know, ask her questions about what she pictures as the perfect ring/wedding in conversation. Also all the comments about "my wife would rather us spend that money on a house" show me that he's only interested in spending money on things he benefits from personally. The ring isn't for him and it isn't supposed to be useful, that's literally the point. It's a gesture to show your love and commitment to her, and if you can't choose a ring she'll like and spend the money to get a nice one, chances are you don't care enough for her to make the effort to learn what she likes and you won't spend money in the relationship just to make her happy. Shocked by the pickmes in the comments. I refuse to feel guilty for wanting a man to show effort and commitment in the relationship, especially when it's via an engagement ring. It's perfect, perfect for me, looks good with the other jewelry I wear. That's what I wanted... something old and beautiful and wouldn't clash with my other real jewels. And yes, emeralds are my preferred stone. He put a lot of effort in trying to find me just the right ring that I'd love and love to wear.

That EFFORT more than the $8,750.00 price tag is what means the most.... he didn't stop looking until he found the exact right thing for me.

I'm pleased with and very proud of my ring, it gets a lot of notice and compliments, it looks so good on my finger. Every time I look at it I'm reminded that my dude loves me and loves my style and wants to give me pretty things that I'll enjoy.

Ladies it's NOT the amount of money spent, it's the care the effort, it's him being in tune with you and knowing what you like and what you want. It's about him wanting to give you the best thing FOR you that you will be happy with.

If you're a minimalistic or "don't like jewelry" type.... good for you! No sarcasm. That's your style and you developed that style to please yourself. You'd be disappointed with a ring like mine because it's not YOUR style.

A real HVM will learn your style and what makes you happy and only give you things you like.

When I picked an engagement ring I wrote down my top preferences and the top one was a large stone. Now I priced out a diamond for that size and it was like 50k...which I frankly don’t feel comfortable wearing that sort of money on my hand. So I got the size I wanted in a moissanite and it cost what I feel is an appropriate amount for someone to spend on an engagement ring I’m going to wear for the rest of my life. But it was all me - he never baulked at what I wanted him to spend.

I also saw a post the other day of a girl who’s fiancé got her a cz ring and she was considering buying a new stone herself....so sad.

This is the kind of ring I’d expect as a promise ring in like..idk..high school? Looks like a gold plated, CZ ring from Walmart in the teen section.

There are so many affordable and adorable options out there. You can have a stunning ring without having to throw a house payment down and have something that will last.

And honestly, you and your partner should be talking about engagement rings, likes/dislikes in style, and what your budget is. The ring itself should not be a surprise, but when the proposal happens should be the surprise.

If some guy proposed to me out of the blue with this ring, I’d turn him down right then and there because he did not give me the respect to have a discussion about potential engagement or my thoughts on anything.

wow that's a pathetic excuse for a ring, I for one definitely wouldn't accept that proposal, not in a million years. Fact is I wouldn't mind if the guy proposed and was like "lets go shopping together and pick out your ideal ring" (obviously he pays for all of it) because one of my favorite fashion jewelry pieces is rings, so I'm quite picky in that regard. That said, I also don't plan on having kids ever so if I have my way, getting jewelry on a regular basis would be a thing.
