This is just my two cents, but I think that people just got sick and tired of having to clean someone else's urine off of a toilet seat just so they can sit down. For the love of everything good, if you pee standing up (more power to you) then please put the seat up.

Maybe they are very aware of prostate issues. It is healthier for men to sit down and pee as when you stand it puts pressure on the prostate which can cause inflammation. I still pee standing, but a dude who got prostate cancer in his 30s told me I am doing it wrong and explained this. That said I don't, and my prostate is fine so far

Standing to pee is savage. I see lots of comments about girls bathrooms being dirtier, because they hover piss, etc. great, I have seen anti hover-pissing signs too. That is also gross. However, standing to pee is also gross.

If you stand to pee when wearing shorts and flip flops, even if your aim is perfect, there is splash back. Simply from the pee hitting the water from height. It gets all over your legs and feet too. I personally prefer pee-free pants and shoes. And the stand-pee crowd get the seat all pissy so the rest of us are forced to choose between sitting in someone else’s piss and pissing on our own legs and feet. I don’t want to have to make that choice.

To be fair it is cleaner to pee sitting down on a toilet that was designed to sit down on. I do it and I ask guests at my house to do the same, standing up makes the piss splatter everywhere no matter how great you think your aim is. However I don't call them animals for doing it the way they're used to. Men and women alike have shamed me in the past though when I admitted to peeing sitting down which in my opinion is a much bigger problem.

I had a housemate who peed while sitting down. He'd be on his phone and not paying attention. We had an apparent leak around the toilet but a plumber informed me that it was just piss. My housemate was peeing over the lip of the toilet bowl and it was running down to the floor. So, if you want to risk having a puddle, sure, make dudes sit.

As others have pointed out though women toilets are also dirty. There should just be multiple signs: dont piss standing up, clean the seat after you leave, dont leave your tampons or genital related products in the toilet, that's what a trashcan is for, flush the toilet.
