I'm in college and I was talking to my coworker about how one of my classes ends at 9 pm in a sketchy part of the city where numerous muggings and kidnap attempts have happened. She just said "well you're a dude so you dont have anything to worry about." I'm 5'8", I dont pose a threat to anyone. Just because I'm a dude doesn't mean I'm safe from that.

Being named Time's person of the year almost always has to do with someones fame, not necessarily their actions. They've had some pretty...unsavory...figures. While honestly the scientists that she based her arguments on, or the movement at large would be a better choice personally, I can see why she was chosen. She's the one who got all the publicity.

It's the same with Al Gore with his Nobel Prize for his Inconvenient truth. He won over a holocaust survivor who saved countless others during that event. The scientists who actually did the research for Gore weren't mentioned at all. All he did was make a fucking power point.

I don't have a problem with her speaking out. Kids should be more vocal about climate change. It's going to affect their generation heavily. I'm just wondering why she is time person of the year. Think about it. This is a girl, clearly autistic, who propounds a kind of dark environmentalism even most climate change activists would not subscribe to, and who has lambasted world leaders about a topic she clearly has little understanding of (saying things like that she could see CO2, an invisible gas, emissions - probably referring to pollution).

How can anyone in their right mind then say that any criticism she receives is related to her gender? The populist right wing media has a field day with the much more moderate Al Gore and his private jets, whereas attacks on Greta has been more about the phenomenon itself and the pretty clear signs that she is being exploited, if not outright abused by vested interests.

In fact, the opposite is the case. The UN (not all of UN; the environmental extremists with silent consent from voices of reason) does something like this every 8-10 years on the environmental issue of the day. All teenage girls. I submit their gender (and age) are not a coincidence...

For the record, I do think we need to come together to combat climate change - but using technology and the right taxes and incentives, not by undermining the fundamentals for the economic growth that has lifted billions out of poverty in only a few decades. And I would even entertain the notion that some degree of alarmism may be necessary for this to happen. But if the choices we have are dark, anti-human environmentalism on the one hand and outright denial on the other, the upshot will be a combination of polarisation and ineffective grandstanding. To the detriment, by the way, of both genders.

Female Elementary School teacher going on about people not using the correct pronouns for transgenders. I tried to explain the most are cool they just don't understand it and that she's assigning intent. I asked how those men would feel being called a bigot because they didn't know to use the correct pronoun.

Her reply was basically that they are mainstream and all good so whatever deal with it.

I had a discussion about her with my friend the other day.

The only thing she does, is just scream very loudly against powerful people. That takes balls, for sure, but it doesn't solve anything. She doesn't give solutions.

Take this guy for example. He invented something that could clean the oceans. It may not work fully (yet), but at least he's actually doing something instead of yelling at people.

Maybe the conversations that you're having involve people saying that you are scared of her influence as a girl. Not really sure how those conversations went, but if everyone you talk to has issues with you, the answer probably isn't that they're all wrong.

I applaud Greta Thunberg. She has been a great addition to the climate change discussion. It's nice to hear young people start to express their fear that the world they're going to be responsible for soon is getting worse because of our own actions that we're not currently changing. Her gender doesn't make her statements better or worse.

In progressive Orwellian newspeak, disagreeing with or having an opposing point of view automatically means fear. They slap the term "phobe" on you or say "Oh you're just scared" to dismiss anything you bring to the table.
I DO worry that Greta has so much influence. The main reason is, she has autism. If you understand the autistic mind, you would know where I am coming from. Autistics think purely in black and white, rigid terms. they need everything to be just right in order to be happy. that sort of mind behind major political reform is what brings about tyranny. So no, I don't have a baseless fear because she's a girl. I am concerned about how seriously people take someone with the lack of ability to think in terms of nuance, lack of ability to compromise, and the lack of ability to allow things to be "messy" so to speak.
