People who have read my posts on /r/MensRights in the past know I usually roll my eyes at the stuff said in here but yeah, this is serious bullshit.
This should not be divided by woman=victims and men=abusers. It should say something like "Experiencing abuse? Call this number" "Worried about becoming an abuser? Call this number".
I think that on the whole men have a slight edge numerical advantage over women when it comes to physical abuse (might be a wash when you consider verbal/emotional abuse) but even if it were overwhelmingly one or the other this is just wrong.
How would a man feel coming to this page, already suffering feelings of shame by being a victim of physical abuse, only to see that basically his problems were being completely ignored? What about a woman fearful of her abusive tendencies?
EDIT: to be clear, I don't mean "edge" as in "advantage". I merely meant numerically; that I am guessing that there are more physically abusive men than there are physically abusive women. This is not to say that abuse by females is uncommon, just that it seems that men are slightly more likely to perpetrate it.
[–]dresaces 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Men's physical advantage is often way overblown, too--abusive wives/girlfriends are able to and have been known to throw pots and pans, etc. at their spouses. Especially considering that men can't really fight back unless they themselves want to go to jail for domestic violence, threats of violence can be just as effective as physically holding someone down.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Seen that shit first hand. Was once hit by my mother with a wooden cutting board... which she broke over my back. Then grounded me for "breaking" it.
She use to throw heavy glass ashtrays, dishes, batteries... all things that could definitely do some damage. The one time I shoved her in self defense, I was the bad guy to everyone who witnessed it.
It seems it is considered normal for women to be able to act fucking nuts and be abusive... men are supposed to remain level headed and deal with whatever is thrown at us.
Sickening.

True, but once weapons become involved this edge disappears pretty quickly.

What I thought: usually the stuff here is just slightly better than the red pill bullshit, full of fallacies like the one outlined here.
But this is real crap. it should be common knowledge that domestic violence is independent of gender and sexuality.

Society does not value men unless they fit a very specific mold, and being a victim is not a part of that mold.
It's not that they don't think male victims exist, it's that society looks down on 'weak' males who don't want to fight and suffer and stoically ignore any injustice pressed upon them.
[–]Wheels279 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you haven't seen the documentary "Tough Guise" I would highly recommend it. It covers this topic (although I think it might be a bit out of date) and it's interesting if nothing else. I found it online for free.
[–]salgat 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Women have an edge over men because it's a lot harder due to societal pressure to charge a woman with physical abuse. Sometimes cops won't even believe it and let it continue.

Claiming “the truth,” being the authority, defining her behavior, using “logic.” using "logic" LOGIC
Claiming “the truth,” being the authority, defining her behavior, using “logic.”
using "logic"
LOGIC
I'm lost, how do you use logic to be abusive? I'm not even being sarcastic, how in the hell do you use logic to abuse a spouse? How does that even go down?
"Hey honey, I'm going out with my friends tonight at the bar."
"I don't think you should. Logic states that in the past, your friends have pressured you into getting drunk a lot and sleeping with other guys. I believe the logical thing would be to skip out this time, you've already gotten in a scuffle with the cops recently."
Would that be considered abusive, a husband using logic to keep her from going out with friends?
[–]theskepticalidealist 15 points16 points17 points 13 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
What they mean is a scenario where a man is arguing with his partner says he is being logical and she is not, which is why they put "logic" in quote marks.
What I like is "withholding ...validation, attention, compliments" So if you dont compliment her enough and give her enough attention, thats abusive! And "sulking" of course, because men are well known for sulking or giving the silent treatment, not women. "Using pornography" too, because clearly men who look at porn are abusive no question. "Swearing" is abusive and "raising your voice" is also abusive, so when you argue with a woman make sure you dont raise your voice too loud , a woman is apparently like a chipmunk, she is easily terrified.
The most bizzare one I find to be this "Not taking care of yourself (not asking for help or support from friends, abusing drugs or alcohol, being a “people pleaser”)." ... so basically if a guy is reluctant to go see a doctor, HE is being abusive. If a guy suffers from depression, HE is abusive. And arguably the craziest of all, if a guy wants to please others thats also abusive.
According to this list, every single person ever is an abuser, and every single person ever is a victim.
[–]Rileyman360 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's what I hate about this list. Half of this stuff isn't abuse, its just being a shitty husband. Isolation alone isn't abuse, its a by-product of it. Isolation alone is being clingy and having trust issues. Abuse of alcohol and drugs isn't direct abuse, it is a causation of it. Swearing and loud voice is not abuse, it is a scare tactic used in abuse, but alone it means nothing. Not taking care of yourself has nothing to do with spouse abuse. Not taking care of yourself is a psychological issue that exists within a single person's mind. It rarely harms the spouse to the point of abuse, exceptions being that the issue causes the husband to commit violence against his wife.
Hell, being a people pleaser is an attention issue. Unless if peer pressure is pushing him to cause abuse, its not abuse. It can only exist as a causation in rare instances. Not complimenting your wife or making her feel special is not abuse, your are just a shitty person for not loving her.
Things on the list can lead to abuse or be a byproduct, but they are not direct abuse. Unless if this stuff is causing actual harm (harm that is valid for hospital or medical assistance), its nothing. Any harm less of actual medical or psychological assistance is just an overreaction.

One of the biggest problems in this area, especially for men I think, is that abuse has no concrete definition. So it's kind of a "she said" vs. "he said." Almost anything can be abuse in the right context, or it can be completely benign in others.... so confusing.

I usually just lurk on this subreddit to get an idea of how far we are swinging from lack of female rights to lack of male rights, but this seriously struck a chord. Now in all honesty I will not do anything about it, however I will say that I am dumbfounded how the Department of Child Protection could put something that sexist up. Most of the stuff I see on here is just plain ignorance towards the male perspective of the case at hand(i.e Rape, Abuse.....), but that right there is just plain, flat out sexist and not to mention offensive. I feel that the people in charge of deciding what information is displayed have truly forgotten that all matters in life are a two way road. They have cut out the fact that not only men can induce an abusive relationship. I hope who ever decided what should be displayed on that webpage gets a quick education in how what he/she wrote was wrong.

*Dear Sir or Madam
I was recently browsing through your website and I could not help but notice on your Domestic Violence Helpline page there is some rather unsettling sentences underlined here http://i.imgur.com/FoFC7ow.png the reason that I find these sentences unsettling is because you offer women a helpline as if they are the only ones who can be abused in a heterosexual relationship and then you offer males a helpline, for if they feel they are becoming abusive but what if their wife is abusing them? How can they get help if they call up and the person they are talking to expects them to be a wife beating scumbag. If you doubt that men can be abused maybe these will help open your eyes.

http://refuge.org.uk/get-help-now/help-for-men/men-are-abused-too/

And if even after you have read these you still believe that Men can only abuse and never be abused, then I hope you live a wonderful an sexist life.

[–]TheAxeofMetal 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ok. Not the way I would have gone, but I see your point.
[+]PlasticHandz 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Quite an immature way of doing it. The chances are that whoever reads that email had absolutely nothing to do with the page in discussion.
you offer women a helpline as if they are the only ones who can be abused in a heterosexual relationship
Whoever reads the email probably doesn't know about the page, and you have just made accusations against them.
you offer males a helpline, for if they feel they are becoming abusive
the person they are talking to expects them to be a wife beating scumbag.
Right...
I'm not even going to bother analysing how bad that sentence was.
Did you not think that maybe before sending an angry, accusatory, unnecessarily abusive (not really helping your point) email, that sending a polite one, pointing out their error and asking them to change it, might have been slightly better?

It's more complicated than that. I think you'll find that "whoever decided what should be displayed on that webpage" also decided the scope of the "services" the government would fund and even the phone numbers used to contact them. They're two digits different. Not a coincidence.

stupid rape culture
Here is a very inspiring TED Talk

[–]Darkling5499 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
all the military CBTs on sexual harassment / assault are about men doing the assaulting / harassing. sure, there's ONE scene in ONE CBT with a male victim, but the aggressors are still male.
[–]ladut 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I quite literally received training on Sexual harassment/assault prevention and reporting procedures earlier today, and saw it for the first time through the lens of the MSM movement. While the booklet may, in fact, contain this typo (I did not read it), the training has been updated to emphasize that both men and women can be victim and assailant. They spent a great deal trying to dispel the notion that sexual assault was a unidirectional thing, and I was impressed at how forward-thinking the military has become on this subject (more so than many universities).
Though men raping men is still defined by the UCMJ as "forcible sodomy," and there might be unintentional typos (like the one you found), I am confident that the military will work these things out relatively soon, and think they're on the right track.

[–]ladut 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You lose important details and distinctions when you try to condense social issues. MRM folks should know this all too intimately, being at the receiving end of oversimplifications about what rape is and who can commit it. I have to agree with /u/Slyfox00 on this one, your summary is kind of reactionary: your conclusion was made 30 seconds into the video, and you saw what you wanted to see.
Well, the situation of rape legally and socially in society today is much more than a condensation, and more a blatant mis-classification and an act of demonization. Also, I did see the whole video, but and that was the impression I got.
[–]ladut 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link
Isn't rape culture in the west more of a strawman though? I've yet to see someone shaming a rape victim not be publicly hated. I've yet to see a rapist, guilty or not, not be hated.
[–]Slyfox00 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link
I'm in Texas, and I work in the military, I see both those things sickeningly often.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link
What causes this? I've yet to see a case of widespread victim shaming. Sure, in closed communities where a scandal might fuck everything up, I can see why people would hide something like a rape, or like in the Jerry Sandusky case, where it was kept hidden for an extended period of time. I don't see this as a cultural thing though, because that would imply that the culture we live in condones this behavior, and that's false.
You are working under the assumption that the "culture we live in" is homogenous. The military might be defined as a "closed community," but it's a community millions of people in size, and one that also spends a good chunk of it's time intermingled among society at large (they are not really a closed community). The sum total of United States culture may not condone victim shaming or rapist apologism (new word I just invented), but the US is historically very dynamic and varied, and it would be fallacious to assume that it's parts are equivalent to it's whole.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Again though, the military as a whole does not condone rape. For this rape culture of yours to work, the rapist must must be extremely lucky with who discovers the rape, and the victim extremely unlucky.
[–]MynameisIsis 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link
In the United States, it is rampant. If you're a young girl, pretty, and get raped, it was "you shouldn't have worn those clothes" or "shouldn't have been in that part of town" or "shouldn't lead guys on". The last one pisses me off the most, since so many guys have an expectancy of sex if they be "nice" to you, like holding open the door.
The only way that a woman in the States can get her rapist convicted is if she's pretty, middle class or higher, never have seen the person before, not have any alcohol, never expressed any fantasies or kink or desire to have sex, EVER, oh and if you're not white, you'd better be DAMN pretty. She must undergo invasive medical exams and retell her story dozens of times after potentially the most traumatic thing she has ever faced. In court, the defendant's lawyer will slut shame her to hell and back, and bring up any possible out of context event out of the past. Had sex in the woods on a camping trip when you were 16? Slut. Own a pair of handcuffs? Obviously had a rape fantasy.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
Huh. Well, honestly I don't know what to believe. Both sides are saying different shit, and I'm not entirely sure what to believe.
[–]ladut 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It depends on who you're around. I am constantly disgusted by the attitudes about rape, sex, and gender roles in society that are held by people in the military (at least the small sphere I've been exposed to), as well as the attitudes held by more college students than I would like to believe (and I study at a liberal arts college in one of the more liberal cities in the Midwest).
As to it's prevalence country/worldwide I cannot speak, but it certainly isn't absent.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Huh, well, I can't say I've ever experience anything even remotely like that. What's your opinion on rape-jokes?
I suppose that makes you more fortunate than I, though before the military, I had never known anything like it. Rape jokes are made to be "socially acceptable" ways to beat your chest I've found in the military; and it's so bad in my unit in particular that you're almost alienated if you don't laugh and joke along.
Hell, just after the last sexual assault prevention training thing I went out to lunch with a few guys, and one of the more senior NCOs actually asked (more told) the waitress if she could shake her ass for him. When she said no, he got all pissy and ended up not tipping her, saying, "she didn't want it that bad." Everyone else followed suit except for me. I came in shortly after and handed her a $20, apologizing for my "friends." I would call it equality bullshit, where any challenge to balance can be refuted by pointing out that, look, it's equal: there's a helpline for women, and there's a helpline for men too!
The general field of bullshit appreciation has benefitted enormously from the Internet which is such a rich, redolent source of it. Every day, I'm trying to better my neophyte status and progress onwards to being a true connoisseur. Thanks, Government of Western Australia.

This is really disheartening.
I went to their website so I could drop them a quick email, pointing out their poor wording. I was going to say how I know many men who've been victims of domestic violence, and that the wording on their website is alienating many men.
But unfortunately I can't find an email address. I see emails I can contact if I know a child who is being abused, but no emails for general website inquiries.
Edit: I found the email address [email protected] and I sent them a very politely-worded email. Hopefully this can all be cleared up.

You know, it isn't that men's rights groups oppose feminism because men's rights groups just without reason, hate feminism. Many MRAs recognize that much of the discrimination faced by men in these areas is a result of changes in law and policy in response to feminist advocacy, some of which goes back to the mid-19th century:
Men face unequal treatment in family court, to the point at which divorce settlements can make men homeless and destitute for the benefit of their ex-wives, and following that, a divorced man's condition of poverty can be criminalized in response to his ex-wife's stated financial needs. In fact, in today's system, authorities don't even care when they compound the discrimination by inflicting these conditions on the wrong guy.
When Caroline Norton wrote the bill which would become The Custody of Infants Act of 1839, followed by her "plain" letter to the Lord Chancellor regarding the bill, she probably had no idea that her writing would end up as the inspiration for a court doctrine which would cause for fathers in multiple nations to suffer exactly the indignities she was trying to eliminate in her own life and the lives of other women, but that is what occurred. The Custody of Infants Act was the start of what is now referred to as the Tender Years Doctrine, the basis upon which it became traditional to place custody of children in divorcing families with the mother. The argument that mothers are better caregivers is put forth in Mrs. Norton's "plain" letter, in which she stated that fathers have to hire nursemaids to replace their wives' involvement in the lives of children during their "tender years," and therefore it is natural that the child should be placed in the custody of the mother. Over the years, this doctrine, originally intended to prevent divorce from keeping women from their children, has been pushed and twisted into an every-case imperative, making maternal custody the default in divorce cases.
Today, while some protesters claim that feminist groups do not want fathers to lose custody of their children, mainstream feminist lobbying groups have fought to prevent custody from being handled evenly, with genuinely shared custody as the default from which a case would begin, using an argument that presumes fathers to be abusive or deadbeats, and assumes that it's more beneficial to the child if mothers are given primary custody without having to petition for it.
Men face discrimination in criminal court over alleged violent conflict with women, on both sides of the equation. If they're accused, their due process rights are violated by laws and policy "intended" to protect women. This has resulted in the facilitation of false allegations, as well as false arrest and imprisonment, leaving imprisoned but innocent men to fight to clear their names and win back freedom that should never have been taken from them. When men have been victimized and are seeking justice, their circumstances and experiences are reduced, pushed aside, compartmentalized, or outright ignored or denied in an effort to reserve for women and women only the resources dedicated toward prevention and treatment of family violence.
The same is true in the anti-male discrimination related to intimate partner and sexual violence. It is not that men have been ignore simply because that is how society is. For the last 40 years, feminist advocates have (successfully) fought to impose their gender ideology on the public and legal view of intimate and partner violence, in a concerted effort to enforce upon society an ignorance of male victimization.
Men's activists attempting to remedy the uneven handling of domestic violence have been actively opposed by feminists.
These areas of activism are just two examples - if you dig into other men's rights issues, you'll find that there are other areas in which feminist-advocated changes in law, policy, and social attitudes has negatively impacted on the legal and social recognition of men's human rights, where which men's groups have made concerted, organized efforts to effect change in circumstances caused by feminist advocacy, from lobbying to as simple as raising awareness of those issues... and where feminist groups have actively opposed that effort.

To answer your question. I don't know, I really don't know but it provides entertainment to me when I'm supposed to be working.
Regarding transsexual and transgendered people, and I only speak for myself but can sum up how most people feel about you guys/girls. Do your thing, be who you are. It's not going to be easy but then few things worth doing are. I don't care one way or another what you do. If you treat me with respect you'll get it back in kind. But if you end every sentence with die cishet scum, make up a billion and one reasons to be offended and refer to your headmates for career advice you're gonna get laughed at.
I personally know people who are trans, who are straight male cross dressers, married lesbian couples. All good friends. But if they were to come out with this crazy shit, I would laugh at them in real life. I'm not laughing at who they are, I laugh at what they do.
So you, who I'm assuming is trans but actually out living your life trying to be a decent person. You're not the butt of the joke, you're just another person that I'm probably not going to pay much attention to. Normal people don't amuse me, it's the crazies I can't look away from.

[–]ReverendSalem 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link
No, specifically what I meant was that /r/atheism's new(?) mods instituted a new set of rules regarding what posts were and were not ok, and the entire community is fractured with huge backlash going on because of it.
While I replied to you, shoegazer, my reply was aimed at both you and LegalSmeagle, as he had suggested heavy moderation and deletion, and you seemed to agree with him. I'm only saying that in a much larger community, something similar was tried and seems to be a bit of a disaster.

Comedy is often a useful tool for getting a message across. Which is what I'll say in lieu of a remark about tone policing.

There's a reason why this subreddit is circling the drain.
On one side, you've got people advocating that the other side get censored, shut down, and controlled. Nevermind the validity of "blaming everything on the patriarchy" being a known stance of feminism - calling them out on it is bad tone and should be removed so that further discussion of it is prevented.
On the other side, you've got people insisting that the other side be allowed to talk, even though they personally disagree with them. Name one "Hey guys, I'm a feminist and..." post that's been deleted by the community.
And naturally, the fallacy of the middle grounds indicates that most undecided people will split the difference, and just want stricter moderation of tone, and discouragement of discussion, by one side only. Hence why MR has been splintered into several subreddits that exist solely to discuss the things that have been deemed unworthy of discussion on MR.
That is to say, despite how much I disagree with your bullshit, which is seen here nearly every day, I won't start petitioning the moderators to censor or shut down your opinion, or insisting that people work together to get these "How MR must change to become more feminist friendly!" posts removed.
Whereas you've already demonstrated that you believe shutting down the voice of your opponents is a valid tactic to win debate. Cutting off your opponent's tongue doesn't show that you are a better speaker; it shows that you're afraid of what they have to say.
This is quite possibly the greatest weakness and greatest strength of the Men's Rights Movement; we extend more liberty to our opponents than they extend to us, and they use that granted liberty to advocate for removing more of our liberties.
Imagine how much more different this subreddit would be, if posts like yours were removed - if we as a group took up the tactics being constantly suggested to us to prevent those tactics from being suggested to us. On the most meta level, if "we should censor!" topics were censored upon request.
For one, /mensrants and /MRmemes wouldn't exist. We'd still be discussing on a daily basis WBB posts and the implications therein, instead of having discouraged them as "not relevant to MR". They'd still be part of the main MR subreddit community, which is still in itself small enough that justification for splitting and shrinking it's content to prevent discussion is facetious at best.
Again, fallacy of the middle - what happened to the voices saying that if you disagree or dislike something you've read, you should ignore it and move on?
Well, they were outvoiced by the "This doesn't belong here, it encourages discussion from those who do like these kinds of posts, so it needs to be censored and removed!" crowd.
"This bar ain't big enough for the both of us" - so the moderators picked the middle ground by relocating everything related to discussions certain members didn't like to subreddits that are strictly for those types of discussions - subreddits that most people aren't subscribed to, despite being subscribed to the main reddit.
Entropy kicks in since most people want a centralized location to get their information instead of having to sub to a dozen different reddits that all discuss the same thing in different manners, and the net result is a noticeable plummet of total discussion of men's rights going on in MensRights, and more room for the "How is this related to Men's Rights?" naysayers.
I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it, even as I denounce and argue against you.
You may not agree with what I say, so the next step is petitioning the moderators to have "harassing, vitriolic, threatening, hateful speech that offends me removed before others realize that Mitschu obviously represents the entire community, and so makes us look really, really, really bad."
I look forward to the formation of /MetaRantsAgainstMRCensorship. After all, what does the stifling of MRA voices really have to do with MR, am I right?

You can call it childish. That is your right. But for some of us, that biting sarcasm right there is a way to express our incredulity.
Feminism is a backwards, anti-intellectual, fanatical and misandrist movement. And many of us find it completely and utterly absurd that anyone can honestly call their jaded beliefs anything other that flat out sexism. That is why we use sarcasm.
You have the right to your opinion, but please respect that the top comment wouldn't be sarcastic if the better part of the redditors here didn't feel some inclination to agree with it and upvote it to that spot.

There are many important causes in this world. Are you aware of the alarming rate at which Rhino's are being poached in South Africa? Or what about the entire debacle revolving around Wikileaks persecution for spreading information that I would say the average citizen has full right to know about?
But none of us here are superman. We all have to pick our battles, and to which causes we lend active support to. Because most of us have lives and responsibilities outside of our causes, and we need time for that as well.
This is MensRights. I joined this subreddit out of concern for the way my own gender is being treated.
If you want to hold that against me, take your karma point and downvote me.
EDIT: And no, feminism =/= woman's rights. That's the misconception they love to try and propagate. Take a stroll through MensRights, and you'll see that the feminist movement for what it is: misandrist. As far as I'm concerned, any woman who wants to stand for equal rights (something I have no problem with whatsoever) had better detach themselves as far as possible from the term feminist.

A soldier often smokes because it helps relieve tension during a tour of duty. Likewise, I and many other redditors on this subreddit use sarcasm as a way to help manage the often downtrodden news we hear about on this sub.
We each have our way. And for those of us that currently aren't in a position to do much about it, verbal confirmation as a way of agreeing to how absurd the feminist movement has gotten the past decade or so is sometimes the best (and only way) we can establish our support for the reasons why we're in this fight.
[–]Jimbob2134 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Constantly bashing feminism just makes us look stupid, and takes away the validity of our cause. If we want to be taken seriously and to progress we need to stop making comments about 'wymyn' and 'the patriarchy'.
Feminism isn't about Women's Rights. It's basically what they accuse the Patriarchy of being - a movement dedicated to controlling what women do and feel.

Feminism-a group/ideal of gaining and protecting rights/privileges for women.

It is the very definition of censorship. While I get very frustrated with some of the language and ideas posted here, I support everyone's right to say them. We can down vote things which are offensive. If you don't like certain posters due to their language, stop reading them.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Have not been on either of them. I do call deleting people's comments censorship. You can argue it is not a bad thing, but you cannot change the definition just to suit yourself.
There is a difference between bashing (not bashful, that should not be a problem) to the extent of destroying conversation and using terms like you describe needed censoring.
Feminist boards become 'safe spaces' by censoring all dissenting views until no one is really arguing against anyone because everyone left agrees with each other.
I think the value of MRM boards is that while a dissenting view may be down voted and argued against, it is still viewable.

[–]DavidByron 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah most domestic violence is by women because they commit so much more elder and child abuse. Feminists "finesse" that truth by basically minimizing the awareness of any form of DV but intimate partner violence -- the only form of DV that women are not the clear majority of violent offenders. Then they further massage the data by hiding male victims or presenting cases of both partners hitting each other as if the woman was only defending herself.
Their wires are not crossed; it's deliberate misrepresentation in the service of spreading hatred.

There is a "Contact Us" section at the bottom of the page. I've seen Reddit get things done before. I say we all contact them and politely inform them of this egregious viewpoint. Domestic violence goes both ways, and it's things like this that discourages male victims from reporting.
Sure the clear majority of domestic abuse victims are female (probably, I don't have the numbers in front of me). But that does not give anyone, especially a government organization, the right to discriminate in such a manner.

For all the neck-bearding going on here, ironically, part of what led to this is Australia's "traditional" culture (something like the US in the 1950s). In part, someone wrote and posted this because they literally can't think of men being abused by a woman - it's too far outside of "traditional gender roles" for a lot of people.

Somehow YOU have oppressed minorities just by existing. Put more simply, this is gender discrimination, plain-and-simple. But what you will hear is, "Yes, but we're doing it right".

[–]acctothrowaway 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's ridiculous.
Australians should be calling this hotline to ask them to be gender neutral. Be courteous and acknowledge the good the service is doing already. Then ask them to be more equal and include all victims and all perpetrators. This service is also denying women who may want help for their own abusiveness and this could hurt their kids (and husbands obviously).
[–]greeniguana6 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There should be classes for those who are experiencing abuse and those who are concerned about becoming abusive, but they shouldn't be gender specific. This really is bullshit.
What makes the most sense is one # for anyone who may be the victim, or may be an abuser, regardless of sex...but that would make too much sense.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
It's also an insult to women... weak, sensitive women that all need protection from the big bad men.
I find that's the case with a lot of this crap, women are seen as either incapable of rational thought or as weak, fragile objects that need protection... Isn't that exactly the mindset they claim to be fighting against? Of course, they'll just blame the patriarchy on it and continue.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It also leaves women who may become violent out of the picture which is harmful to everyone around them and especially themselves. When I was younger I suffered from very, very violent outbursts due to abuse I'd suffered most of my life and kept secret - I never hurt anyone but I did punch holes in walls and fuck up my house quite a bit. I felt like a total freak because I had never talked to or heard of a woman being violent in the way I was acting out. The case where that woman drove her two boys into a river and the other where the woman drowned her kid in a bathtub were news when I was young so I knew women could commit violent acts against other people and I knew people could hurt themselves but I didn't know women could act on such intense, violent anger or where to immediately turn for help.
I always had to make some excuse to myself for behaving that way. I'm lucky. I was able to get it under control but if I'd ever hurt anyone else I wouldn't have known what to do or where to turn. The women I'd seen in the news were shown as outright monsters, freaks of nature for doing the awful things they did. If that had been my mindset then I'd be a completely different person.
[–]r_rships_account -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
When I was younger I suffered from very, very violent outbursts due to abuse I'd suffered most of my life and kept secret [...] I always had to make some excuse to myself for behaving that way.
And you still are, in a sense. You weren't able to say you engaged in violent outbursts without describing it as suffering from them, and you felt constrained to "explain" (excuse? justify?) their aetiology in the same sentence, without so much as a comma between the fact and the "explanation". And the reasons for your violent outbursts were entirely irrelevant to your point.
Hoo boy. Hey reddit psychoanalyst, how's it hanging? I'm just going to lay it all out here because I feel like you may continue pestering me no matter what and maybe it'll help someone who reads it.
I don't suffer from them any longer hence the past tense and time frame. At the time I was suffering from them as they inflicted harm upon me, they were not really of me more something I experienced in a detached state and at their peak they were something I had to deal with when they came, even if it meant ripping up a piece of paper in the bathroom. My therapist let me know that the outbursts were bordering on IED in their severity but that because it didn't require outside stimulus he didn't want to label it as such. It was not manic or bipolar disorder either - just a lot of pent up anger in a person who would never harm or lash out at another person in that manner.
I think that giving back story as to why I was having those outbursts is justified because of their origin. They were not something that was in me but a symptom of what had happened to me for a long time. These outbursts are not at all uncommon in victims of abuse.
I don't really need to excuse or justify them to anyone since the only things I ever harmed were inanimate objects and the person I hurt the most through acting on them was myself. I do not feel ashamed for this portion of my life and I do not experience these outbursts any longer. That doesn't mean that I should deny or turn a blind eye to where I could have gone with them or where other victims do go with them.
Anyway, thanks for trying to do whatever you were trying to do but really, I'm OK. I'm kind of hungry but I'm OK.
Ignore it. I too dealt with extreme anger for many years. I too never hurt anyone else although I apparently punched my husband's arm once (he is twice my size so it did not hurt but it was still wrong). It took me a long time to learn to dissipate the anger and understand it was a shield to cover up other emotions. But as you said, there are no resources or education for women who have anger problems. We are told through media that if we are angry we have a reason to be, that it is ok to take it out on men. At the same time if you are religious anger is a bad thing and we are to be shamed.
Not helpful in the least. These hotlines could be helping people more by acknowledging that women do get angry, that it can be as equally damaging as when men get angry, and that we can hurt our spouses and children as a result. They could be doing more good, but instead limit it due to either ideology or ignorance.

Gah. It's so damn wrong! I know that Feminism influences it, but that is definitely not the sole cause of something like this happening. It is one of my new personal goals to try and change this for Feminism. It is ultimately the most hypocritical thing within the cause.

I think it's even more hypocritical to advocate for the group that has more power under the banner of equality and then lay the blame for failing at the feet of the group with less power.
Who is placing blame? And where?
[–]AloysiusC 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Feminists are placing blame on men. This is done with the construction of a worldview based on patriarchy theory which is inconsistent and contradictory. The whole purpose is to Other men and place them in an adversarial role with women before the discussion even starts.
When challenged, they will typically throw in "patriarchy hurts men too" as an attempt to refute without having to give up on the model entirely.
Yuck, I know, I can't blame men though, because I've seen just as many women perpetuate sexism as men. Everyone, everywhere is guilty of it, I think that placing the blame on men is just an easy way out for a lot of Feminists. It's everyone's problem, and as a species I'm hoping we can come to own that.
Also, the Duluth model is the direct cause of bullshit like this.
Feminism caused this.

I can't speak for this, because I don't represent all of the Feminists. What have MRA's done for the areas in which women are behind? I'd like to see the two groups get together. Men representing men's rights, and women representing Feminism...it's never going to work. Each party only further's their own gender's interests typically and what would be even more efficient is one group for gender equity in which we could all make an effort for either gender no matter our own individual identity.

How can you further men's rights without furthering women's rights? I think they are interconnected, because all social problems usually are.

[–]Wheels279 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, from what I'm learning here on Reddit, a lot of statistics on DV specifically, which leave out men. Claiming that women are 85% of the victims of DV, when really that doesn't account for under reporting of men who experience DV, as well as that men who do experience it usually don't want to talk about it, OR DV organizations tell men that what they are experiencing isn't considered DV. This is just one example I know of, but I'm still really new to the topic, so I'm interested to find other ways. Also, the fact that the definition of rape leaves out men so that it is impossible for them to claim that they were raped.

Tell me exactly what I am supposed to say here? That I, one person, can somehow challenge the government or a large DV organization and say "You're statistics are wrong." If YOU care so much, why are you doing anything about it? Personally I'm going to school to gain a better education on the subject, to be qualified to do research in the area. I don't need to prove myself to you when I know these two things a) I am a feminist, b) I support and aim to further men's and women's rights. If you don't believe this, then I can only come to the conclusion that you are frightened by the idea that maybe, just maybe, not all Feminists are man-hating, bleeding heart, ignorant women. I can understand why stereotypes as presented in the OP are threatening and scary, but you're showing me a double standard, you want Feminists to be more empathetic and stand up for men's rights, but you're going to stereotype and degrade them at every turn? You can't have you're cake and eat it too.

Tell me exactly what I am supposed to say here? That I, one person, can somehow challenge the government or a large DV organization and say "You're statistics are wrong."
Im not demanding you can do anything about it, Im asking for evidence that all these feminists you say exist actually recognise the false DV and rape statistics for what they are. This is an example of a feminist that came head to head with one of the consequences of feminist legislation, yet she doesn't recognise this as coming about because of feminism and seems to only think its happening to her little darling boy.
I know these two things a) I am a feminist, b) I support and aim to further men's and women's rights.
Lots of feminists claim they care about mens rights, even the lunatics in Toronto screaming in peoples faces that they are "rape apologist scum", that they should "shut the fuck up and listen" and singing "cry me a river" in response to male suicides.
The only self described feminists Ive seen that actually "walk the walk" of equality is the Christina Hoff Sommers school of feminism. And she uses essentially the same exact arguments against feminism that MRAs do, because she is self aware enough to know she is just a very fringe minority. The only difference between the MRM and Sommers is that most MRA's go one step further and say there is no legitimate argument to equate feminism with equality and use that as a label to denote egalitarianism and that even at the beginning it wasnt about true equality.
[–]Wheels279 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I think this is the best thing you've said all day. This is the kind of response I was looking for, see this is something I can use and integrate into my identity. I might be a feminist, but I am also a human, and sometimes that means I am wrong. I'm really not arguing to antagonize MRA's, but I am trying to learn from debate. I hope to be able to say I am an MRA, but I am also a Feminist, and that requires understanding both sides and where they disagree and where they overlap. I hold to aspects of my argument still, because I along with other self ascribed feminists I know work one on one to help DV male victims through empowerment, however I truly have only ever seen statistics on women being the majority of DV victims, but I guess that just further proves your point. So how do we change that? How to we get men to report? How do we debunk statistics that are wrong?
[–]Wheels279 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Again, you say feminists, but here I am in my college education being taught feminist theory and we spend a lot of time discussing how rape can also happen to men as well as women. In my opinion, someone who believes only women are victims and men are perpetrators is guilty of sexism.

Have you discussed how the standard definition of rape ignores most male victims because it only counts people who are penetrated, and ignores men who have been "made to penetrate"? Due to that, stats appear to show that the vast majority of rapists are men, but it's not true if you properly define rape.
[–]Wheels279 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yes, it has been brought up as an issue. Social policy is one of the best places to look for stereotypes of a culture in my opinion. Wanna know what people who have no knowledge on the topic think? Just look in politics or public policies being made!
Also, as I mentioned in another comment, I have a male friend who has had the bad fortune to be a victim of rape, so I have slightly more knowledge in this topic as opposed to domestic violence.
Have you discussed how feminist advocacy directly hurts men?

This came from feminist theory. Where do you see feminists talking about DV as if men can be victims to an equal degree as shown in the literature? Because if you deny that men suffer DV an equal amount of time, you are what you claim you arent.

On an individual level i can say that isn't true for me. Women are more often the victims, but men are victims too and they have the right to be acknowledged as such. I can only speak for myself on this matter though, to speak for others would be foolish.

No they are not. All the research that has asked men and women the same questions comes to the same conclusion. Women hit and are as abusive at least OR MORE than men are, the only difference is because men are generally stronger women are more likely to sustain serious injury.

The only way you can get that high ratio of female victims compared to men is by either only asking women (yes this happens), or only going by police reports. The studies that ask men and women the right questions equally always find its close to equal, equal, or that women perpetrate more abuse. You have to understand that domestic violence/anti-rape organisations (every one Ive seen) presents these lies about the evidence, because they are run by feminists and the idea that men are victims of abuse to this degree by women doesnt fit their worldview.
And its not just in domestic violence, but they mislead you with rape statistics as well. For example you will be told that women outnumber male rape victims by a huge margin, of course naturally this is what you'd expect if you define a woman raping a man as not rape.

I definitely knew this about rape, in my educational experiences so far it is a topic that is widely talked about, I think because the under reporting of male rape victims as well as because of the ridiculous misconceptions about men being unable to be raped. Unfortunately, I also have a male friend who has experienced this, so I have some first hand knowledge about the stigma that goes along with it.
But, I truly didn't know that the statistics on domestic violence were so ridiculous off. I mean, I had an idea that they probably weren't very accurate because of under reporting and stigma, but I never imagined that it was as false as it apparently is.
I'm having a fantastic time learning more about Men's Rights during my time on Reddit. I'm kind of excited to challenge some of my friend's with the knew knowledge I've acquired.

Here's a meta analysis of current literature:
http://lab.drdondutton.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Carney-M.M.-Buttell-F.-Dutton-D.G.-2007-Women-who-perpetrate-intimate-violence.pdf
An interesting Corrections Canada research paper on female-perpetrated domestic violence:
http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/rsrch/reports/r175/r175-eng.shtml
The Wikipedia article is pretty well sourced, too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_violence_against_men
Of course, there's the classic feminist Michael Kimmel douchnozzle quoted in there, you know, to make sure that the old "DV is mostly male-perpetrated" meme is more firmly entrenched to placate any feminists that might read the article, but overall, it's pretty well neutral.
Thank you, I will have to take a look at this information!

Apology accepted, we all have our off days, I wasn't going to take any hostility to personal, since sometimes redditors just have a tendency to do that. I hope your migraine gets better!
Don't compare "stereotyping" feminists with stereotyping men.
Anyway, chances are it is indeed a result of feminism. It was feminists after all who made domestic violence a gender issue and it is feminists who consistently push agendas that result in this kind of sexism. While they have enthusiastic support from tradcons, it's still enough on its own.
[–]OuiCrudites 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't necessarily think that is always the case.
Then provide counter examples.
If you're right, that should be easy to do. If you're wrong, as I suspect you are, then stop saying this.
This sub seems more worried about defending feminists than men.
Or at least, the trolls who come here every time a post gets on the front page are.
Its the trolls, feminists clearly got linked here somewhere and now here they are saying that not all feminists are like that. I guarantee you they will deny the studies that show parity in DV. Even Christina Hoff Sommers is self aware enough to know that her's is a fringe opinion of those that identify as feminists.

Yeh, so I think it's more of a response to the situation as it is today. The vast majority of couple's domestic violence calls in NSW are men hitting women. Guys can still call the cops - no problems there - but there just aren't enough cases to justify opening a hotline for male abuse victims. It's less a political statement than it is applied practicality.

Hmmm, ideally I'd like to see the Australian statistics, but for the most part I'd imagine the statistics are quite similar.
On a separate note, does everyone on here realise that the Feminist and Men's Rights movements have much the same goals. They both paint the other as the oppressors, but are moving towards achieving the same ends.

I for one agree, it would be unreasonable to have a genderless abuser and abused, as all abuse is given by men to women, not between two members of the same sex and certainly not between from woman to man.
This is why women are referred to in popular men's culture as the "weaker" race who exist only to offer sex, clean the house and look after any children that might happen to pop out while the man and his coat-hanger aren't looking. as you can see from the description women are entirely subservient each day I look to mecca and praise allah for it.

Haven't you heard? Men are very, very oppressed. Especially white men. No, but honestly there are some men's issues that need to be addressed. Such as some men being accused of false rape charges, or how a man being sexually assaulted is not taken very seriously. Unfortunately, the vocal majority of this subreddit just blames feminism for everything. This place has become a huge joke.
[–]theskepticalidealist 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 12 points13 points14 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Her being female isn't the problem. Her being a sexist PM who exploits the political climate and acts like a victim standing up to those oppressive men to legitimize her sexist policies is the problem.
The PM of Australia is not the Premier of Western Australia. That person (Colin Barnett) is a man. However, the WA Minister for Child Protection (Robyn McSweeney) is a woman.

Yeah. Or just don't be there for the knife. Maybe try exercising some good judgment, or making sure your girlfriend isn't crazy/better than you at knife fighting.
[–]Shieldbase 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Good judgement. lol, that's not realistic, i'm sorry. Not having good judgement is part of growing up. By that logic, you would have to pick crazy a couple of times to even know the difference. just saying you should know better doesn't change it. edit- but then again, maybe i'm just saying that because i have poor judgement
[+][deleted] -18 points-17 points-16 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
OK, fair enough, I guess this doesn't apply so much to children. But I think the message here is for adults. I would think an adult would be able to identify a problem before it got to the knife fighting phase.

I didn't say anything about women, I was talking about men. Don't pretend women and men are the same strength. A woman might not be able to fight back, but a man should be. If you're in a relationship where you're afraid of your girlfriend, you need to stop being a pussy and man the fuck up. Get off of this pathetic subreddit and go lift some weights, or at least learn to fight someone half your strength.
[–]Steam_pimp 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's truly laughable. I've been in a relationship with a physically abusive women. The abuse didn't start until a long time into the relationship, when it was too late to jump out cleanly. I'm a large man, have worked in the "security" industry (none of anyone's business, but it was a little more serious than a doorman) and by no means was she anywhere near as strong as me. Would I hit her back or physically fight her? Hell no. I'm twice her size and strength. The minute I laid a hand on her I would have likely injured her severely. That's the funny thing here, you're acting like there exists appropriate circumstances to hit a woman. Guess what? There isn't. Unless she has a dangerous weapon, such as a bat or knife, there is never reason to do anything but "bind up" a woman so you can use that size advantage to keep yourself from getting hurt or walking away. That's it. Men's rights doesn't mean that we don't acknowledge the physical differences. But women can be just as damaging and abusive as men. It really does sound like you are trying to justify hitting women back, you know what that gets you? Jail time.
Why didn't you say anything about women? If men are smart enough to be able to avoid abusive women, then are you saying women are too stupid to avoid abuse?
Wow. And you thought WE were bad.

P.S. go tell women in abusive relationship they just need to pull their shit together because obviously it's their own fault. stand by your belifs at the least.

So when your wife is beating the crap out of you, and you have small children in the home, please tell me how you are supposed to avoid getting beaten up?
My aunt was abused by her husband, and she was literally twice his size. She was 4 inches taller and a hundred pounds heavier than her husband , yet he would use her as a punching bag for years. She finally snapped one day and hauled off and slammed his head with a cast iron frying pan and nearly killed him. She was not charged at all and she kept her children.
If a man tried this he would be immediately arrested for DV and probably not be able to see his kids. He certainly would not be able to gain custody of them, and they would be in the hands of a violent parent (the mother in this case).
We would like to see equal protection by law enforcement, the courts, and society for men in Dv cases. We are asking for equality. How can you seriously deny this?
edit-I am not advocating that men be allowed to beat their wives back. I was trying to point out that size does not matter in DV cases, and that there is a huge double standard between men and women in the DV system. I would like to see services for men and anger management services for women, as well as reeducation of law enforcement to include male victims.
