Talking about relationship issues with them, hanging out one on one, excessive direct messaging/texting. Those are the basics. I'm sure there may be situations where I might care more or less. Such as if it's a very old friend, what kind of topics are they discussing, how attractive is she, does she seem to have feelings for him, etc.

Obviously I'm not literally enforcing these rules or anything, it's just the line where I may start to feel uncomfortable about their friendship. The only actual "rule" me and my partner have for each other, is if we start to feel like there are aspects of our friendships with members of the opposite sex that have us feeling unsure or guilty, we should either bring it up and talk about it with one another or stop. Eg. if I'm texting a male friend and the conversation starts going in a direction that I would feel guilty if my bf were listening in, that's my cue to reign it in.

If he plans to travel alone with a friend for more than a day, it would give me a pause. Or if he is going to travel across a country along with someone.

These situations don’t mean it is automatically not ok. But they require further justification, like traveling for work or I know the person he is traveling with.

It’s always ok. There might be some individuals I don’t like, but they could be men or women. I trust my husband and our relationship. I also believe that if you don’t try to control your feelings, and instead focus on controlling your actions, nothing will happen. If my husband would cheat me because he spent time alone with a woman, our relationship couldn’t have been very strong to begin with.

To be honest, I think if I would restrict my husband befriending women, I wouldn’t be fair. I couldn’t expect fair treatment for myself after that. I hate to be left out in a work group for example, and the explanation of “sorry, my wife’s jealous”, doesn’t make it feel better. Networking is important, and people who spend time with each other, tend to favor each other.

I have a bunch of male friends and my partner has female friends as well. The vast majority are in relationships so when we hang out it’s as couples, which i can’t imagine anyone would have an issue with. One-on-one is fine too but i have two boundaries that i think are reasonable:

1: Your partner should never be intentionally excluded. If they’re in the same town and it’s logistically feasible they should be invited to whatever hangout. I’d find it frustrating if my partner wanted to go somewhere with a female friend (or even a male friend tbh) and was like “nah you can’t come.” It’s not that i need to supervise him with friends at all, it’s just if he’s doing something fun I’d at least like the option to join.

Don’t talk negatively about the relationship to opposite-sex friends. I have nothing negative to say about my current relationship, but this is a boundary that i broke in my last LTR and even though my ex was the worst I felt really guilty. I think if you must vent about your partner, vent to someone who you are 100% certain is not attracted to you.

These are unspoken boundaries for me. My partner and i trust each other (we were friends for years before dating so he knows I’m not inappropriate with my guy friends). But i think these two things are where I’d draw the line.

My (24f) best friend is a male.
We used to have sleep overs and hangout almost daily.

He got a gf first, I set them up. When they got together we stopped having sleepovers and going out 1 on 1 for food/drinks.

I have a bf now and they four of us do movie nights and trivia nights! My best friend and his gf (now my closest girlfriend) live together now, so I do actually have sleep overs again! Them in their room and me on the couch.

I call them mom and dad as a joke when they bicker. I also filled her in on our inside jokes and code words, and then same with my bf when we got together.

The dynamic in our friendship def changed but its no issue and went without saying that we had to adjust some things out of respect for our partners.

Hes still my best friend, but we both have our own “main” person now and fully respect each-others relationships. I may have known him longer, but she knows him in a way I never will! I’m glad he has her.

Trying to avoid spending time with me/my husband and talking poorly of the one they aren’t friends with is a big deal. Disrespecting boundaries verbally or physically is also a huge problem. It’s never about potential cheating, it’s about behavior that makes me or my husband uncomfortable or tries to get between us. Shady stuff like that makes them a shitty friend, regardless of whether or not they’re trying to get one of us to cheat on/leave the other.

It obviously depends on the guy. Some guys are honest and legitimately make friends with women for shared interests and I know a very few like that. Anecdotally, when I was younger in college I had a ton of male friends. At the time we had more aligned interests and since my female friends were more conservative in some ways, I felt less inhibited with them (swearing, making edgy jokes etc.) and it was cool. Sooner or later though I learned all of them either wanted to hook up or date me and when I rejected them they either disappeared or we didn’t hang out as much. I’m not saying every guy has bad intentions but I only have one male friend right now and he and I dated ages ago.

It's ok as long as it's a normal friendship and they both respect your relationship.

It's not ok when time spent is more and interest is bigger (honestly, they should be dating then). It's not ok when the friend is clearly romantically interested and flirting, that's not ok at all.

It's not ok if the friend is a relatively recent ex, it's not ok if it's an old ex who never managed to move on, even if he currently has a partner.

It's not ok if the friend is against your relationship, whatever the reason (if you are toxic, which you shouldn't, it's up to your partner, unless you are abusive but then you shouldn't date anyone)

It's not ok if you constantly compare me to that friend...why aren't you dating him/her then? Don't settle...

It's also not ok when the friend is used as a tool to make the partner jealous, even if the friend happens to not be romantically or sexually interested. If everytime you feel insecure you are going to subtly use him/her to trigger a reaction from me, I'm not gonna like him and I'm ending such a childish relationship.

Healthy boundaries are one of the unspoken bedrocks of a healthy relationship. And good boundaries only come from within oneself. You cannot impose them on your SO.

My fiancé and I place no such boundaries on each other’s friendships because we both maintain them internally. Although I have no doubt he encounters women who hit on him, I have no concern that he might cheat on me. And vice versa.

And when you get to a point in adult life where you have full-on careers and kids, you end up having friendships practically out of necessity. I have a male colleague I lunch with every few months. We talk about our businesses and our work-life balance etc. These conversations are sometimes little lifesavers for me. No sexual chemistry at all. If for no reason my fiancé forbade me from meeting with him, I would have a serious problem with that.

When my best guy friend started dating his now-wife, he and I were roommates. I knew it would make me uncomfortable if my bf lived with a female friend/roommate, so I went out of my way to befriend her, invite her places with my friends, and develop a genuine friendship with her. I'm still friends with them both and she is just as much my friend as he is at this point, if not more so. The two of them and me and my husband hang out all the time.

Grumpy 48 year old fart here. My wife, of 24 years, isn't ALLOWED to have male friends outside of one gay male she's known since high school. All other things aside, this is incredibly naive. The whole definition of 'cheating' is that someone breaks that trust. That's why it hurts so much when it happens. If you were expecting it, it wouldn't be that big of a deal (and you probably shouldn't be in that relationship in the first place).

As for the OPs question, I think it's a complicated issue. I wouldn't ever want to forbid my partner from having male friends, because being that controlling is just insecure. Not to mention that it only encourages secrecy and kills any sort of healthy dialog that can be had about the situation.

Beyond that I think it depends entirely on situation, what level their friendship is, how well I know this person, what they plan on doing, how the guy behaves and talks to her, etc. If I get bad vibes from a dude, I would make that known. And if a certain interaction makes me uncomfortable I would expect her to respect me enough to stop that kind of interaction until, at the very least, we have had a chance to talk about it.

Regardless of intention, though, if one party in a relationship says 'I'd prefer it if you didn't', and the other party goes ahead and does it anyway, there's a very blatant problem of not respecting your partner's boundaries.

Mixed gender friend groups are perfectly fine, and my partner could hang out with male friends as much as she wanted, as long as it was in a group setting. However, I wouldn't be ok with her ever hanging out 1-on-1 with any male friends, and I'd be cautious about her being with a group of guys without at least 1 other girl. I'd also generally take it as a red flag if she had mostly male friends, although it wouldn't necessarily be an outright dealbreaker.

Happily marred and I have guy friend. I have study in male dominated fields. I’ve stood in the parking lot for an hour after class just listening them talk about there jobs or hobbies. I work in male dominated field. I’m now up in the office so I have more women coworkers now. I still go down to the floor and talk to the guys. There are quite a few guys down there that are attractive. I’ve had guys who been honestly about liking more than a friend. I’m pretty honest that I’m happily married. I love talking about my husband. No one can change that and not to get any ideas. I don’t understand cheating or sleeping around. I have a guy friend that lives about hour away. We get lunch and watch a movie. We might go to the mall. We talk and he goes home and I go home. I have no desire to have sex with him. I want my husband and that is it. My husband is in more of a women dominated field. I trust him. He trust me. I do my best to be the best wife possible. We both live fairly simple lives. He can grab and use my phone when ever he wants. I feel sad for people who are worried about there partner leaving them or cheating. That would just be to stressful for me. I think If you have issues with opposite sex being friends. You need to find a relationship where both have the same belief and set up the same boundaries.

So for me, I trust my instincts. The only time I was cheated on, I had no proof, but I knew it right when I saw her the next time. I also knew the guy was no friend of our relationship. When I was married, there were guys I didn’t care about and others I did….so it mattered. I was/am good at reading people.

So for me, it isn’t too easy to define. Basically, im cool with opposite sex friends when I feel confident about that friends intentions and my partners attraction to them being non-existent.

Being attracted to others is something I’m pretty good at picking up on.

So it flat out comes down to the individual situation, as well as how serious I am about them. I can remember one girl I dated, we were official for a little bit, that had a friend, they were friends for a long time, she was really into me, but I was only kinda into her. I could tell they had an attraction, and I removed myself from the situation. She likely would have cut him out if I pushed the issue (she would have made an excellent LTR) but in that situation, I couldn’t ask her to do that and exited the situation myself as it was quite messy and I couldn’t accept her cutting off a long term friend for me, or still being with her when I could feel their friendship was more than they would acknowledge. A couple years later they were together (no clue how/if that ended), and I was far from surprised.

We are monogamous and he knows that if that isn’t working for him for whatever reason I am open to discussing renegotiating that arrangement and coming to an agreement on something else that works for both of us. If we really couldn’t be on the same page anymore then I guess we’d discuss divorce.

Friends aren’t an issue. I don’t care if they hang out alone. Usually that would only happen if I’m busy doing something else or if it’s doing something I wouldn’t want to do, for most things we hang out with our friends together (and the friend’s partner as well).

I think if you only feel secure when the other person isn't doing x or y with the other sex, that's just a sign of insecurity. I will choose to drop the relationship if I cannot trust the other person rather than choosing to control who he can and cannot hang out with.

My husband has 2 female friends that pre-date me by a long shot. One he has been friends with since high school, the other since he was 19 or 20. He's 41, I'm 31. He never dated these women, and they're both married to other men. I am not threatened, because they're amazing people, and I am objectively younger and more attractive than them. It's not a flirtatious relationship, and we are couple friends with her husband as well, have gone on trips together, etc.

Depends on the relationship, length of the friendship, attraction/attractiveness, and whether or not flirtatious vibes are there.

You know how vultures wait for animals to die for a meal? Some people hang around a love interest, waiting for the relationships of people of which they are attracted to end, so they can fly in and shoot their shot. So, years ago, when my husband told me a coworker/extended friend circle member is giving him vulture-y vibes, you respect that.

It's always ok, as long as he's not attracted to his gal friends, and not doing anything sort of "intimate" that should be saved for romance. I have the same standard for him as I do for myself.
