Last week, I went to a Korean Sauna for my first time while traveling in Atlanta. They have a gender segregated wet area, and I had a great conversation with a couple of guys while chilling in a hot tub and cold plunge. We talked about traveling, cold plunges, African cuisine, etc. So, you can find these places, but they may not be common.

In my city we have a few barber shops, that has almost turned into some kind of lounges for men. They've gotten the rights to serve not only alcohol as in beers, but also straight liqour. The atmosphere is super nice and relaxing, and the barbers are great. 10/10 would recommend. It's not entirely the same, but it's a start.

So I searched group golf lessons - they only exist for women and children, men need to pay up for private instruction during the workday. An example that many have mentioned here is the barbershop. Most of us still get our haircut, some at a true barbershop. I still go to a barbershop. Part of the problem is there's just no dudes there hanging out any more. Everything is scheduled online. I am a member of both a college fraternity and I am a Freemason in the US. I also belong to Scottish Rite and OES.

About five years after graduating from college, I connected with several of the guys from my fraternity and we were going to meet up. Every single one of the married guys flaked, but the unmarried guys came. I got the chance to one of the married guys after, and his wife didn't like him meeting up with guys from his fraternity and didn't let him attend fraternity events where women were not allowed because that was sexist and wrong. While this is a sample size of one, I still think this is a common attitude that many men and women hold these days.

What's even funnier is that there were several women in Order of the Eastern Star (which is a women's organization that men also belong to) who do not like their husbands going to Lodge because women aren't allowed. This one is EXTRA special, because Order of the Eastern Star can only operate if there are Masons present. Literally there have to be men from the Lodge there, and they aren't allowed to attend Lodge, what's the point of belonging?

I can't say I agree. I can pretty much go anywhere without feeling afraid of what I might say, no matter the audience. There are groups for demographics that I don't fit into, but I'm not concerned about being excluded. People are allowed to create spaces for themselves, even men. I see them in sports, recreation, and special interests. Any concern about a group comes from observing the beliefs that are created, reinforced, and acted upon by members of those groups. That's true everywhere. If it feels like a lot of people consistently question the ideals or actions of a group, it's worth it for the members to do the hard task of reflecting on that and genuinely listening before doubling down.

It's the old "if everywhere you go it smells like shit, check your own shoes."
