Saying that women are the only ones who choose the relationship while men just hang around like helpless babies waiting to be chosen is a stupid way to look at the dating market, but it’s a common sentiment nonetheless. But the same men who claim that women are the “choosers” are also the ones who bemoan women’s “unrealistically high standards”. The problem with this is that their insistence that women have all the power of choice is a great argument for why women need to continue to have high standards and maybe even raise their standards more.

If men are not filtering out incompatibilities or making any choices in romantic relations with women, then it is solely up to the woman to determine if the man is a good match for whatever she is looking for. If men are not joining in on the process of analyzing the dynamic, the responsibility then lies on just the woman to figure out for the both of them if this is going to work.

It’s like she has to have enough discernment for two people instead of just herself, because the man isn’t going to do any filtering whatsoever. The only barrier to getting into an unwanted situation is her.

Continuing to claim that women are the only ones who choose only encourages women to raise their standards. If you want women to lower their standards, you should participate more in being choosy and stop saying that women are the only ones who do so.
