I think it depends, I enjoy playing video games, but it's not a compulsion or addiction. I don't neglect parts of my life to play games. So many men are addicted to them though and they seem to have less restraint than women when it comes to them.

I love games. There's one coming out this week that I'm super hyped to play... after I get off work and finish at the gym. I've also been getting ahead on my graduate work, cleaning my house, buying groceries, and folding laundry so my life is in order and I can play as much as I want without neglecting my adult responsibilities.

Men on the other hand, in my anecdotal experience, have issues controlling themselves. I could understand playing 'frequently', maybe staying up a bit too late like you would with a good book every now and then, but it never seems to be just that. It becomes all-consuming to the exclusion of other things. It eats at their motivation and social skills. I have no interest in even trying to date a 'gamer'.

Genre or 'type' of game also seems to play a role. Violent, mindless shooters, MMOs, or sports games tend to be the worst. Strategy and RPG players can go either way. Puzzle, text, click-and-point, and visual novel type players tend to be the most 'normal'.

It’s pretty situational for me. If they play every day, I have to wonder if they are using it as escapism. Even if not, it’s totally okay to not want to date someone who would rather play games. I want to go out, explore, try new foods, be out in nature, and I think guys who play a lot of games won’t want to do that kind of thing and will want to stay home instead. It’s kind of like anything done in small doses can be okay, but like I’ve had problems with men addicted to scrolling Twitter or being obsessed with cryptocurrency. I think addiction to screens and stimulation is a massive no for me, and video games often fall into this category. They don’t know how to regulate their emotional states or are playing out narcissistic fantasies.

my fiancé and I play together sometimes, otherwise he will play his complicated strategy games here and there - the key is what types of games, how often he plays, and how much he values gaming. I don’t begrudge a man who picks up a game every so often to have fun; I do the same thing. But if he’s playing online games with toxic communities and he’s saying abusive shit to other players on his headset, and uses the match lengths as an excuse to not go out (or worse, plays WoW and refuses to go out because that game is a time suck designed to make you sit and wait for things to happen), that’s LV behavior. I also see it as a red flag if they overvalue video games, as in act like COD is the highest art form or think they’re superior for overpaying for prereleases of half finished games from mainstream studios who churn out content, and know nothing about the writers, developers, etc.

I know some guys who like to hang out and play a sports video game with each other in person for about an hour, so I think that kind of situation is ok if they’re not neglecting other areas of their lives.

I personally used to love video games but definitely was using it as a form of escapism and I’ve since grown out of it, to the point that I don’t even have the time or attention to dedicate to them anymore. We should expect that same type of growth from men.

My NVX believed “quality time” for us was me watching him play video games because he believed his presence was all that he had to contribute. It was a terrible life. So glad I left him.

It’s situational for me. I personally really enjoy games. For the last 15 years, I’ve always owned at least one handheld console (gameboy color, advance,DS, 3DS, PSP, gameboy micro, etc) and these days I just play the switch and the micro.

I’ve had 2 partners (one past and one current) I consider to be good men. Both were not gamers at all and started playing a little after meeting me. I got my previous boyfriend really into PokémonGo. I’m a max level player and it was fun to exercise together, explore new outdoor places and meet so many lovely local players in my community.

When I was first talking with my boyfriend, I complained about having no one to play with. Within the hour, he drove to the store, got himself a switch, then surprised me by asking to join my game. He’s not a gamer and it’s his only console. He got the Animal Crossing switch (my favorite game that he never had any intention of playing.) It’s adorable in our living room 🥰

He doesn’t have any friends online to play with (except for me). He only plays games from the Super Mario series and sports games. He plays sometimes when I work night shifts. However, he’s never decided to game alone when I am home and available to hang out with him. And it is the same way for me. I’ll play when he is asleep or when he’s working and I’m not. Sometimes, we play together. However, neither of us have ever missed out on an opportunity to spend time together by choosing gaming over one another.

We both prefer to do things in the real world. Since rescuing a living, breathing cat, I’ve gone MIA on all the cat neighbors I’ve been collecting in Animal Crossing (Sorry Punchy and Kat)

Here’s some things to think about when considering a partner’s gaming-

Can (and does) he lose gracefully to other players?

Can (and does) he lose gracefully to you? Or does he make a million excuses why he lost to you and can’t wrap his head around you being better at a game?

Does he get aggressive with the physical system? (Throwing controllers, hitting the console, etc.)

Can (and does) he win gracefully?

How does he talk to other players?

Is he kind to players who are inexperienced, less skilled (and likely younger)?

Does he use aggressive language (misogynistic phrases, racial slurs, homophobic phrases, curse words, etc.) with other players?

Does he speak appropriately to opponents he knows and inappropriately to opponents when he is anonymous?

Does he decide when to game?… Or does he let bros pressure him into gaming when he doesn’t want to? (Or when he has other responsibilities?)

How do his gaming friends to speak to other players?

What kind of content appeals to him? (Sports? Fantasy? Creative play?Adventure?….Or weapons? Violence? Destruction?)

Are his games one-time purchases, or is he continually dumping money into them?

Is he transparent about the amount of money he spends on gaming?

Does gaming cut into his ability to maintain healthy sleep habits? (Or God forbid, good hygiene 🤢)

If something comes up, is he able to able to save the game and quit? Or does he “need” to finish, only to turn off the console hours later?

I'm not into video games at all. I can see why a videogame might be like a TV show is to me. The only issue is when it becomes excessive. So my issue isn't with videogames per se it's when that starts affecting how much time he spends with me, or if he ignores me or important things because of it. That's not acceptable, but whatever else he does with his free time is his concern. I'd be annoyed if someone told me to stop watching reality shows or reading fiction, so I won't do that to a partner either.

Having said that, I usually don't date gamers simply because I have a very strong preference for athletic men, and usually those two categories don't mix.

It depends on how much time the guy spends on playing video games and what type of video games he play. Playing it an hour per week is very different from playing video games for hours on a daily basis. There are violent and sexist video games and others which are actually good for you (eg. Wii Sport).

Depends. Videogames is a HUGE genre of entertainment. Would you say "how do you feel about movies?" or "how do you feel about books?"

It's just a genre, it doesn't encompass everything, and not all games are bad. Just like all movies aren't bad, or all books are good. And those other two I mentioned could just as theoretically be argued are "escapism from the real world," which by the way there's nothing wrong about, in and of itself.

Plenty of us women here play videogames, hell, some of us would go as far as call ourselves gamers because it may be one of our major hobbies. However, it's how you go about it that matters. Women don't spend 10+hrs straight, neglecting jobs, family, hygiene, grooming, chores, food, etc. We have a good balance and treat videogames as just another hobby.

With all that said, the ones who make it an issue are MEN. Men choose to not self-moderate, they choose the low value, misogynistic, addict-encouraging, games out there, and they choose to neglect everything around them... except work, because it's basically one of the few aspects in their life where actual consequences are enforced.

So if the man self-moderates, chooses a good variety of games to play (and not just shooters, online multiplayers like WoW or LoL, or sexist crap), keeps it just as a hobby (which can mean going weeks without playing, because he knows what to prioritize in his life), then it should be a non-issue. It's incredibly hard to find a man like that, sadly. And if he calls himself a gamer at all, then yeah he's a no go, not even for us women who play videogames as a hobby.

As someone who loves video games, I would encourage you to stick with a boundary of no video games in a partner if that is what you want.

There is so many video games out there, and so many people creating new games every year that it is hard to keep on top of what is being released - the gaming platform Steam has been flooded with games containing nudity and sex, which are at low prices. It is hard to keep track of which games are what you would consider 'quality' content.

Plus it is easy to get addicted or to use it as a form of escapism (been there and done that), and quite a few games have a form of gambling known as loot boxes or have micro-transactions which can suck your money.

Then there is the question of screen time, can this person set and maintain boundaries enough to fulfill their responsibilities and still have time for other hobbies? I know a lot of ladies on this sub have managed to balance video games with the rest of their lives, but men seem to struggle with it in general.

I agree with this and also have video gamers as an instant deal breaker for me. Every guy I have ever dated or even just known that was a gamer was a huge LVM or NVM. most of them are seriously addicted to the games and really do spend exuberant amounts of their time and money on the games, when their living areas are filthy, when there are priorities to get done, etc. These men are immature and emotionally stunted.

I dont mind if a dude plays video games if he hangs out with his nephews or nieces playing with them on like Thanksgiving or something like that, its the dudes that have the consoles and all the games in their house and have that whole "video game setup" with the chairs and mics and headphones that are obsessed LVMs.

I’m not a fan in principle but my boyfriend plays 1-2 hours a week, helped me choose then set up my son’s console, helps me choose games for my son and plays with him when I let my son have screen time so for me it’s been ideal. I don’t even know which room his console is in because it doesn’t live out and he never gets it out when I’m there.

My ex played for at least an hour every night and I found that pathetic.

I also am not into guys who watch a lot of sports. If you want to go out and play sports, that to me makes sense (I’m a bit athletic myself as I surf and play tennis. I like running, lifting, and hiking too). Those are my boundaries 🤷🏽‍♀️

Although video games themselves can be ok, men seem to be incapable of having it as a healthy hobby and not making it a toxic part of their lives. All of the women I know who play video games don't have this issue. I would not date a man who plays games more then a couple hours a month and I will NEVER date a man who plays online games. A man can not be part of a horrifically sexist, racist, all -ists, abusive community and still be high value.

Personally I won't date a man that plays video games. Part of it is definitely because there are a lot LV guys who play, but also part of it is because I just personally don't like video games. I believe we would be too different. It's the same with me for drinking because I rarely drink (like a couple drinks per year), and so someone that drinks much more than rarely is out for me. It becomes a compatibility issue.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to just not want a man that plays video games, there are plenty out there. But if someones more open to it, because maybe they also play too, then it's not a total disqualifier. It's personal preference.

I don’t mind my boyfriend playing games. :) He plays a history-themed one he likes and uses this time to talk and play with his brother and friends as they live in different cities.

But he also has long university days, a part-time job, an endless desire to spend time with me and excellent hygiene and life skills. Games are literally the last of his priorities and when a man is not addicted to them and has a life to lead, he won’t have that much time to spend playing.

Unfortunately men often get addicted to gaming, and don't understand the concept of moderation when it comes to things they enjoy. Playing video games isn't an occasional thing for them, it becomes a lifestyle. This is why I unapologetically avoid men who consider themselves gamers.

Depends. I have met people who have it as a reasonable hobby, but it doesn't eat up their life, and they are successful and productive in other areas. They definitely don't let it ever take priority over their career or their relationships. However, these aren't the same people as your run of the mill gaming addicts and overgrown toddlers. It's pretty easy to figure out which one someone is with a few conversations.

I was catching up with a friend and found out that her 27 year old niece’s live in boyfriend quit his job to pursue his dream of Twitch streaming. So, the niece is now working overtime to pay rent and all of the bills and then has to come home and feed and clean after this broke gaming man child. This would be my fear. If you date someone who plays video games, pay attention to his baseline level of responsibility, ambition and career stability.

Personally I don’t like video games and I’d never date a man into them. When I see a dude with a game controller , usually on their blue Tupperware bin they use in place of a coffee table, it’s an instant turn off. Video games is perhaps the lowest value hobby anyone can have. If you think about it, you are sitting still for long periods of time under the guise of earning meaningless "achievements" which have no real life benefit to you as a person.

Not to say that one can't have a nonsense, time-killing hobby to partake in ever. But so many people make gaming a part of their identity, or they use it to frequently escape real life, or in using it the pass up opportunities to better themselves or have real life enriching experiences with other people. Some extreme cases are addictions or dependencies that result in neglecting personal relationships, responsibilities, and goals.

Ive seen grown men and women whip out their phones during a happy hour get together to catch Pokémon, and a guy who was at Disney world for the first time in his life sitting on his 3ds, or a man who would chose to stare for hours at his computer self passively completing tasks and leveling up skills over going out and trying something new..

For me personally, anything more than a passive interest or occasional participation in video games is too much

I have some gamer guy friends and from what I've seen even the more HV-ish among them still are in horrible physical shape and have social interaction problems. So anything beyond "casually games a couple hour per week (and not every week) on the weekend" is a no from me.

Edit: I know other gamer guys ( not my friends ) that got introduced to the manosphere by their online gaming buddies and my firneds have told me more than a history about the combination of gamer/pornsick in some of their ex boyfriends.

Gaming in and of itself isn't a red flag, but gaming addiction is. How he reacts to losing is. I'm somewhat of a casual gamer myself, but it doesn't eat up a lot of my time, money, aspirations, family, or self care. Does he rage when he loses? Does he act aggro at other gamers? How many hours does he play per week? What kind of games is he into? How much money does he spend on gaming? Does he practice good hygiene and self care? Where is he in his career for his age? Does he have any career aspirations and does he work towards them?

It depends. As long as they're not playing 24/7/365 (like my brother, before he started studying recently) and, as you said, neglecting their responsibilities, it's fine.

I even play myself! But I get bored easily, like "I already played this game for a long time, I'm bored". That's why I started to set up limits for mobile games (30 minutes max.) and I'll set alarms in case I play on desktop (Maybe 1 hour max., idk yet). And it's not even daily! I play once in a while because I have other responsibilities, like uni classes, internships and house chores.

If men can't manage/organize their time, they're LV. Period. If they play or not doesn't matter. What's the point of dating someone who doesn't play videogames but spends all "that" time doing NOTHING instead?

Also, as other people commented, the game they play have a lot to do.

I personally am attracted to animated or minimalist stuff. On desktop I sometimes play Club Penguin (Rewritten) or The Sims 4, which boosts my creativity (dressing my characters, decorating my house/igloo, etc). And on mobile, "normal" games like the ones on Android devices by default (Snake, Criquet, Solitary). There was a time when I tried different mobile games but not anymore. I only stick to 1 game because they take a lof of space on the phone, which I need for university homework. As of now, I only have Mario Kart Tour, that yes, is competitive, but I'm not on it to be the first in the overall ranking, but to collect daily rewards, coins and stars instead (by racing). And with the 30-min timer on. I even play for less time than that.

Taking that into consideration, I'm really turned off by abrupt violence, blood, nudity and vulgar language that can be found in most videogames that men play. That's a big no-no for me, because it makes men violent (I've seen it with my brother). Even worse if they spend ALL day on that!

About sports games I think it also depends. I've always wanted a Wii to play those that involve movement (I've played it once at a friend's house) and you're entertained and physically active. Double win! But if it's on desktop or mobile, where you'll be laying down, barely moving, then WHY?

The comments also gave me a new perspective of the word "gamer". I may be wrong here but do you realize most, if not all male gamers are playing 24/7, obsessed with whatever game they're playing, and neglecting other areas of life? I don't think any HVM who likes videogames as a very occasional hobby (because they have a life) consider themselves gamers if they barely play, right? Not all of us, HVW, and the ones leveling up on their way to become HV, consider ourselves gamers despite loving games and playing them occasionally (because we have a life), right? If that's the case, then all male "gamers" are LV and I wouldn't date a "gamer". Wouldn't disregard anyone who play "normal" videogames once in a while (for entertainment purposes only) either, because chances are those men may not consider themselves gamers, so it's likely they aren't obsessed with that, but as y'all say, I have to keep vetting.

Your standard is valid. There are way too many games these days that are designed to be addictive, and you know the type who are absolutely addicted. Also it’s no fun to date someone who doesn’t value being in the real world the way you do. Almost all guys who are in tech are videogamers; they go hand in hand due to video games being the gateway for many young programmers to get into coding. if you don’t want to date them, just don’t.

That said, it’s not a dealbreaker for me, personally, if playing video games is only one of many things he does for entertainment, and gaming isn’t his whole personality.

I play them myself, but I quickly can commit some amount of time to them, depending on what else I need to complete in the day. Knowing this balance myself, I look for this balance in the men I date. Also, what someone plays is telling. Does he just like FPS (first person shooters) and get mentally high off killing people? Or does he like an eclectic mix of FPS and RPG (role playing games) and puzzle games? Can he differentiate real life from fantasy? Can he compartmentalize real life from the escapism that video games provide? Does he cultivate hobbies outside of just gaming? All things to consider.

I occasionally enjoy gaming (did it way more as a kid than I do now) and I love arcades, but I can go ages without picking up a controller. That being said, I spend little time, money or effort on it as it's not something high on my list of priorities. I simply find it fun.

However, there are certain things that stand out to me as red flags when it comes to gaming in men I date. One, if he is a sore loser or only plays violent games. Two, he spends an excessive amount of money towards gaming. Three, if he has few to no interests outside of gaming and the majority of his social interaction is centered around gaming.

I’m no more anti-game than I am anti-weed. I don’t enjoy or partake in either, and I don’t want to compete with either one for my partner’s attention.

My ex husband (turns head and spits) was a total game idiot by the time I left. I would work 9-12 hours a day, get home, and all he would have done was drink cheap beer and play video games. He proudly displayed his thumb calluses from his controller. Thought the whole thing was funny.

The girl who moved in after me was ten years younger, and they met on Tony Hawk.

For reference, he was actually FRIENDS with Tony Hawk. We were invited to his wedding. That’s how much of a fucking loser my ex is: he had the most amazing life and incredible opportunities, but he’d rather drink cheap beer, play video games, and pass out on the pizza he had delivered for lunch.

After him, I asked every guy I thought about dating whether they played video games. Most of them say yes, so I’ll follow up with a few questions to determine whether they have any kind of objectivity about it. If they prioritize gaming over literally anything at all, they’re a cypher on my scope.

I think there can be a bit of leeway here. If a man makes video games part of his identity a.k.a. calling himself a Gamer, then that's a pretty strong indicator that he places too much importance on games. This is why I dumped 3 of my 4 exes, they got depressed for some random reason and took up gaming. Sometimes I'd wake up in the middle of the night to hear them screaming at some 13 year old kid over killing some monsters or something.

If he's just a casual player (doesn't always need the latest stuff, doesn't keep track of new game releases, doesn't watch others play the game on youtube) then I think that's okay. My bf isn't a "gamer" because he thinks it's a waste of time to do work in a virtual world, but he still plays his fav game for an hour every couple weeks. It's really hard to find a man who has NEVER played a video game, but it's definitely possible to find someone who treats them like a casual game and not a lifestyle.

I love video games. I love world building and storytelling, more specifically, which means I'm very picky about my games. When I do play, I don't let it control my life, I don't dump money into them constantly, and I don't have any weird superiority over which console vs PC.

Alloy from Horizon Zero Dawn is a total badass and a HVM all the way. There's a scene in which a king hits on her, and one of the dialogue options is a not so kind putting him in his place, and he accepts it and apologizes for being forward. It's a great game all around but I love Alloy!!

Male gamers, as a whole, should be avoided just like porn addicts. Gaming culture is brimming and boiling over with toxicity and outright hatred for women. Pass, sis.

On top of that rampant, overt misogyny, Scrotes know nothing about moderation and game-life balance which is why we have so many gaming addicts— a legit medical condition just like alcoholism and gambling addictions. P.S. Women as a whole are better at not letting games make them basement dwellers so girl gamers are fine. I’m one. I own my own company, have an MBA and own a townhouse in the middle of NYC. Girl gamers rock. Scrote gamers can go sit back down in their mommas basement, LMAO

This was one of the reasons I broke up with a previous partner. I dabble in a bit of games, but once I start to feel addicted to it, I ruin it for myself.

I also think that one should pay attention to what kind of games they like and the community that they immerse themselves in as some gaming communities are toxic.

if it’s a hobby, it’s fine to an extent. some people let their hobby take over their whole life and free time. my hobby is drawing, yet i only draw a few times a week for like an hour. if gaming distracts them from their real life and is all they do during their free time (instead of going on walks, trying a new restaurant, playing with the pets, spending time with YOU) - then yes it’s a problem. also if their video games of choice are highly graphic or sexually explicit - big no. and watching him play video games is not quality time, ladies.

Its completely dependant on the person. My partner and I both game occasionally. Maybe a couple nights a week. And I've never had an issue with him prioritizing games over anything else. Its purely a hobbie for when we've both got some down time. Its the guys that have to play for hours every day you need to worry about.
