I saw this thread. There were so many missing the point entirely and saying that this strategy was only realistic if you were handsome like Jage Gyllenhaal. No mention of how sociopathic it was.

When some people did point it out, they received responses like "isn't flirting always manipulation to some extent?". Lol telling on themselves.

I think the funniest comments to me were people saying that this movie wasn't sexist or an archetypal "Men Writing Women" because the protagonist never loved anyone in his life except his mother until the female love interests comes along and he feels compelled to respect women and love people.

I think one time a guy tried to pull something similar on me. It was long ago but it makes me laugh sometimes. I was going home after shopping and a man called after me calling me "Stephanie". It's not my name so I didn't stop. He eventually caught up on me and stood in front of me making me stop. He said "Hey Stephanie" again and I was like "I'm not Stephanie". "Oh then what's your name?". At this point I was annoyed and just said "No" and left. But I think he was trying to pull some stupid pick up technique.

Luckily that's something that would absolutely not work on me.
