I have a friend that drives mustangs. She can tell numerous stories about men talking down to her over it. A woman in a muscle car in particular seems to really trigger a certain type of man, the ones that think women don't "appreciate" what they really mean or deserve the things they represent because of it.

They know that a women exulting over a car is really a woman exulting over everything a car symbolizes in the American psyche: freedom, independence, power and the ability to make your own way in the world. The ability to ride fast and take risks, to especially to pick up and leave when things are bad. Those are things women just "can't understand" and really should not seek or be allowed to do as men do. On one level they understand that if women exercised the freedom men do, society would likely fall apart, and I think that worries some of them. Also that they might have to take on the responsibilities and drudgery that should belong exclusively to women.

That said, I don't know if many women can fully appreciate how galling this woman just living her life can be for envious men that find themselves the have-nots in life. They really think she has these things at their expense, because they see the world in zero sum kind of terms.

As Faulkner noted, no one envies someone they think is superior, but only those who have what they believe rightly belongs to them. This is why it angers some men to see women "take" those things that they feel should be theirs. It's really the ultimate sign of their own impotence, figuratively or otherwise, that a woman can best them--even and maybe especially when she has no idea there was ever a competition.
