For me, it's ruined the left when it comes to gender-equality. It's not possible to take seriously a group of people who claim to be progressive and in favor of things like gender-equality and NOT judging people in the basis of random innate characteristics they happen to be born with, when so many are so willing to make an exception for men.

As you say, the kinda things that are ROUTINELY said, and supported, in progressive spaces about men, would cause an *uproar* if said about more or less ANY other group.

How would it go over if someone claimed black people, jews or gay people are worse than wild predators? The person making such a claim would be banned. Not acceptable. But if we're talking about men and bears, then it's fine!

Amusingly, many of the people who make that particular argument will THROW A FIT if you ask them: "So, who would you rather meet in the forest, a black man or a bear?"

Making the man black makes it hard for them to dehumanize him, because they don't wanna appear racist. So they're in a bind.

I’ve mentioned this before but there was guy on Twitter and his name is Travis (forgot his last name) who’s post went viral right before the 2024 election because he committed the cardinal sin in telling the left not to dismiss men and men’s issues, and lose them, specifically young men, to the alt-right.

Well, that apparently offended the man-hating leftists because they went after this dude and they were sending all kinds of unhinged replies and quotes about how men don’t matter and no one cares about their issues, men need to stop whining, etc. This is one of the many reasons why Trump got elected.

Then they wonder why the alt-right, and people like Andrew Tate has amassed a large following with young men.

These days, I tell people I hold leftist positions, radical ones even, but vehemently disagree with the character of the left of the past 10 years and they do not represent me.

I've said this several times here, and repeat it all the time. But I think the post-2016 left is a distinct entity from the leftist movement prior. There was a huge influx of people into political activity and discourse who were solely motivated by Trump Derangement Syndrome. These are people who did not pay attention to politics before Trump, and only started to pay attention because Trump's superficially vile personality disrupted the aesthetic ignorability of politics. I even remember a mega-viral tweet from 2016 where some high profile personality (I don't remember who it was) remarked on how it's a sign that things are bad when people are learning the names of people in politics besides the president. I saw fucking *everybody* sharing that tweet for a while, with zero self-awareness. Like seriously take a moment to let the irony sink in of all these millions of people saying "I know things are bad now, because I'm actually paying attention", without realizing that what they're also saying is "I have no idea how bad things were before, because I wasn't paying attention".

These are not people who decided to start associating themselves with leftism and weighing in on politics as a result of putting conscious effort into figuring out what their political principles really are. These are people who were offended by an aesthetic, and in a strictly reactionary fashion decided to adopt what they considered to be the opposite aesthetic. These people do not support trans rights, for example, because they have a structured understanding of personal freedom as a political principle. They support trans rights the way a rebellious teen in the 70's listened to rock music to piss off their parents.

Basically, leftism got taken over by people who do not actually understand or believe in leftist principles. And of course this was a perfect opportunity for the worst elements of feminism, which already had a strong foothold in the leftist movement and perfectly fit that opposing aesthetic role.

Regardless, I do not associate with the modern left. But this situation has not changed my political principles. The labels might change, but I still believe in and want the same things.

I’ve always understood right and left to be a political-economic distinction. Capitalism and oligarchy vs socialism, Marxism, and communism.

I could be wrong about that - I’m an electrician, not a political scientist - but it’s how I understand the matter.

Because of that, despite my increasing lack of patience with modern feminism, I still consider myself a leftist. I’m a socialist: where else on the political-economic spectrum should I position myself?

It’s convenient for feminists to align themselves with the left, but they don’t own it, they don’t define it, and they tend to undermine the class solidarity that the left should be focused on.

Nowadays I consider myself a radical progressive, not a Leftist. I can't stand how identity politics and performative acts have taken over the Left; instead of acting against the oligarchy and seeking ways to prevent extreme concentration of power and resources, they simply seek to put more people of specific demographics into those institutions of power. They act like marginalized people are incapable of greed, corruption, or petty vengeance which is NOT true.

Often times, when marginalized people get power, they simply become the abusers. Look at the Jacobins of the French Revolution, or the Bolsheviks of the October Revolution, or the generals of the Haitian Revolution, the True Whig Party of Liberia. The last one is particularly interesting, as Liberia was colonized by freed slaves from the USA as part of the Back to Africa movement. These people knew EXACTLY what slavery and marginalization was like, and when they got to Liberia they made themselves the new elite, owning all the land, forcing the natives to work long hours on plantations, and holding all the power for themselves.

If THAT doesn't show the Left the error of their thinking, I don't know what will. White Supremacy, Patriarchy, racism, transphobia, etc. are all expressions of the real threat: oligarchy. And until the Left realizes that, I'll stand as a Radical Progressive.

Yes and this is something I keep pushing to all the people on this site and especially in a subreddit like r/askaliberal because that echo chamber loves to gives the most tone deaf responses. I've been told a lot of misandry is coming from a small minority that doesn't represent the whole left or that they're bot accounts designed to make the whole left look like they're insane. These people truly don't understand just how much influence these online spaces have especially with politics.

I have said before that I really think the left wing political parties need to be more active with cleaning up, moderating, and policing the online left along with the academic left. The include the academic left because guilty of the misandrist rhetoric as well. A lot of the online left's rhetoric is taught by the humanities departments at several universities all over the world especially in the west. There's so many reasons why Trump won his presidential election in 2024, the misandrist rhetoric of the online left definitely played their part and a lot of people on the left are seemingly being way too arrogant to even acknowledge this.

I think that part of the problem is that feminism operates more like ethnofascism rather than social justice, but is able to share space with Left Wing liberation movements because of people's tendency to prioritize women's concerns. Feminism is thought of as a kind of honorary minority advocate front in the same category as the other social justice movements instead of the female supremacist ideology that it actually is. Women, who aren't actually a marginalized minority group demographically, are grouped with the other, legitimate marginalized groups anyway, which ends up leeching feminist (i.e. fascistic) tactics and thought processes into the pool.

The recent DEI and identity politics poisoning on the left takes a lot of cues from how feminism has always operated -- language and thought policing, moral ambiguity, emotion instead of logic, feelings instead of facts, authoritarianism and "justified" group favoritism masquerading as moral righteousness.

For example, the inclusive baseline tenets and behaviors of previous (and more successful) liberation and civil rights movements, pointedly didn't broadly advocate for revenge/prejudice in the other direction are now seen as milquetoast by the woke left because of it.

Feminism has always had that revenge justification and reverse prejudice baked in though.

Let me tell you that it's completely thrown me away from left leaning political parties. I've been a Libertarian for the better part of 2 decades, but I always considered myself socially left. I'll vote left because I personally believe social aspects of a government are more important than the fiscal ones.

I can't bring myself to do that anymore. And yes I'm going to get downvoted heavily, but I simply don't vote anymore. I can't support what conservatism has become or what liberalism has become anymore.

I call it out when I see it. It's all you can do. In fact, I just did this morning, when someone on a pro-Palestinian sub mentioned that Palestinians lives were ignored "just like women's health."

That doesn't mean I'm going to stop being a leftist. To me, being a leftist has meant being anti-war/anti-imperialism, pro-freedom, and pro-economic equality, and pro- racial and gender equality. And yes, I'm very frustrated with the state of the left right now. Because the left today seems to be pro-war, pro-censorship, pro-corporate capitalism (as long as it's covered in woke window dressing), and pro-discrimination and outright hateful toward men and white people.

But doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to become rw just because someone has co-opted a movement. And we also have to remember that we're mainly talking about the political West. What it means to be "left" looks different in China, or South Africa, or Brazil. The American empire is in decline, and it's time we broadened our outlook.

Identity politics, including feminism, did.

It divided the left into a caste society of “victims,” who are always right and whose every word is sacred, vs. “oppressors” whose job is to “listen and learn”. The former cannot only lecture the latter, but also treat them like shit without fear of retaliation, or even being reprimanded.

This had no chance to work long-term. No well-adjusted person would willingly join and stay in a community which pushes them into the role of perpetual underclass. Most go in bright-eyed, having been promised true equality that would benefit everyone, and leave as bitter cynics who hate the left and their former colleagues. Those who stay usually either have the status that protects them at least partially, or (sadly) come already conditioned to accept abuse, usually by their parents.

I'll give some basic distinction.

I think the left, when it grounded itself on the principle of universalism, is a wonderful concept. The idea that everyone should have the same access to resources, respect, and a life to thrive in, etc. The focus of uplifting the working classes. 100% on board with that.

With that said, the left in practice has brought into toxic ideologies that paint some kind of androphobia towards men in these spaces. It comes from a mixture of things i.e bad experience with men, and feminism talking about how men uphold the patriarchy or have to undo toxic masculinity. The idea of DEI is what I support, and it's what they SAY they support. But the initiatives, projects, and practices they came up with do not reflect that at all. A lot of it reflects that same anti-male misandry. That gives the leftist spaces in particular a very hypocritical image.

You can still call yourself a leftist in the fundamental sense of the word, but with how that environment is shapes, it makes you more unique leftist in this sense. The best thing any one of us can do is to lead by example that not all left leaning people are misandrists, even though a large majority of them are.

Going to give my experience, and it's kind of a reverse view.

What ruined the left is the desire for defending social and status hierarchies and different rules for different people based upon it. The misandry is just a tool in that regard, a way to distract and justify the primary goal.

I'll say it again, if you're going to actually judge them by their own rules, the modern popular Progressive movement is deeply problematic as it's based around some really ugly things. To be blunt, it's based around justifying and excusing sexual harassment and various forms of abuse. This is less the political ideas and more the cultural framing around it. The desire for dehumanization and ostracization of the other.

As someone who has become right-wing almost exclusively based on how the left treats men, yeah. There's also an anti-white sentiment that I see constantly in leftist spaces. I will simply not support any group or ideology that descriminates against me for my race or gender, or gives anyone any sort of benefit for NOT being my race/gender. (DEI and such) I also am extremely against any sort of white guilt. I've never done anything evil and I'm very done with the lefts whole game of white people need to repent for their past actions, they cannot have pride in their race, cannot assemble and see commonality in people who share that race etc. I don't agree with everything republicans believe/do but you bet your ass I'm taking the side that doesn't hate me for my identity.

There is a way to continue to be a male-supporting leftist in the modern era, but it is a little counter-intuitive.

We have to go all-in on trans rhetoric. Anyone who claims they are a woman is a woman. You can change your gender at any time with a word. Any questioning of gender identity is bigotry.
Claim to be a woman every single time it is convenient. Use the womens bathrooms. Sign up for women only events. Apply for women only scholarships. Get car and health insurance as a woman. Identity is what you say you are, so you aren't even lying. By identifying as a woman, you are one.

If a large enough wave do this, everyone will have access to all the female perks, or those women-only perks will be eroded away. Win-win.

If you care about those things, then there is no way you can be a right winger. Right wingers care about men selfishly, not out of any principle. If they were a woman, they'd just as easily be a feminist. The exact same is true in reverse. They aren't left wing on principle, they are left wing because it benefits them. A lot of left wingers are this way, it was never about being correct, it was about advocating for your own rights and supporting others if it just so happens to benefit you.

Having morals and ethics is hard, it requires constant arguing with yourself, it requires deeper thinking about normative ethics. It's why so many people choose to follow a religion instead, it's certainly a lot easier. But, it's the right thing to do to follow your principles. Not because it's easy, not because it's smart, and not to fit in, but because it's right.

If you consider who their only competition is (The Republicans), it's no surprise that the Democrats can get this awful, alienating, and nasty and still expect voters.

The game is that neither party wants to win an election by more than one vote, because that means they've wasted money. Although the left wing definitely has a misandry problem, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s ruined the left. This is because I don’t think male versus female issues are really a major part of the general left wing platform. It’s not like, for instance, any major left-wing figure is saying that the standard for convicting a man of a sex crime should be reduced to a preponderance of evidence or that women should be immune from defamation suits if they publicly vilify individual men. In fact, outside of abortion, I can’t think of any gender-related issue (aside from LGBTQ+ issues) which is a significant part of the general left-wing movement. From my point of view, the left-wing still primarily focuses on issues that affect everyone like affordability, healthcare, education, etc.

The Left definitely has a misandry problem, but it’s not so extreme that it poisons the movement in my opinion. It’s more just that many liberal Redditors are annoying and a small but not insignificant number of women in real life treat men worse than they treat women

Misandry is bad and sucks and it is worth calling out. When you call it out, I suggest (if you have not already) mention that you are aware misogyny is a structure which is bad and harms women more than men, but it also harms men by pushing us into boxes and misandry is still hurtful.
Someone made the comment about the "man vs bear" discussion and liken it to adding black men. When you say that forest remark and add black man it is inherently different than the patriarchal structure that is being talked about in the first preposition. We all suffer under patriarchy. All of us. However, some suffer more. The problem also comes when most men do not call out other men about their anti woman bullshit.

With this all being said, I do agree that we as a society need to not embark on not shitting on people on shit that people can't change. I ask you though, are you this committed to marginalized groups broadly are not shitted on?
