I’d recommend going to a board game cafe, if you have one. Or at least going over this with your dates before just showing up with one. If you’re dead set, anomia (or anomia x, the dirty version) is fun or you could always bring a deck of cards.

Hey, actual woman here. I don’t claim to speak for all women, of course, but I love tabletop games and so do all my friends (regardless of gender); I have no clue what the guys on here are taking about, because I think a good portion of women would be happy to play a game on a date. (Tho like, probably make that part of your plan, to meet up to play, rather than springing it on her once you meet.) I’m glad you know what you like, and don’t seem to be put off by the negative comments here.

The type of game you’d wanna go for will vary on the type of person your date is. Generally, you’d wanna find something both of you have played before, or that isn’t too hard to learn/teach; something that doesn’t take 5+ hours to play; something that doesn’t have a whole bunch of setup and takedown that’d be awkward at a cafe table; and something that works well with just 2 players, of course. Find out if she’s into word-based games, traditional card games, any specific type of game that you could bring.

There are some games that aren’t exactly “games” but are more like…conversational tools, I guess, that foster deeper connection. I have no idea if you’d be interested in something like that, but if you are, 100% you should check out We’re Not Really Strangers. It even has an expansion pack specifically for dating!

Good luck with whatever you end up going with! Regardless of what other people here say, I think you’ve got game (ba-dum tshh).

I had a date do this and I thought it was weird but it ended up being fun….then he brought it on EVERY date 😂 he would carry a backpack full of games for us to play. This man was 31 years old. It depends who the date is with because some people aren’t into games, but if a guy invited me to play board games I’d be so happy! I hate coffee/dinner dates because they’re so boring. Go to a place that already has them.

Wait at least 20-30 mins into the date, and casually offer to play something. Maybe start with suggesting something quick and repeatable like Uno, rather than long and horrific like monopoly.

Don't be pushy about playing, and let your date decide what will be played as well. If they say no, don't raise it again, and only mention it as a date idea after at least 3-4 subsequent dates.

This makes it an organic situation, and won't make you look like some nerdy guy seeking to make his date play Warhammer 40k with him. Not judging, just saying.

Bonus point: Quick and repeatable games allow banter to build about who is winning etc., which creates that spark you may be seeking.

Go for something you both know (explaining rules sucks). Just test the waters beforehand - ask if she likes boardgames and if she has a favorite one (Bonus). If she's really into it, it might be a huge win to pull that game out as a surprise - otherwise it could be really cringy.

A good amount of places in my town already have board games for this exact purpose, but I don’t think bringing your own board game on a coffee date to be a good idea. So either find a place that already have board games, or wait for a date at either of your places or as a great way to introduce her to your friends.

As for the board games themselves, it’s mostly easy-to-play card games like Exploding Kittens, chess, or trivia games, with an exception here and there.

I go to bars with board games bro. Once I’m done talking, I don’t mind switching it up and playing some games. Connect 4 - whoever loses the round has to give the winner a kiss. It’s a good way to build rapport but unfortunately I have noticed that after these dates the girls are not romantically interested in me. Potentially giving off friend vibes. Chess and Checkers are good choices. Everyone knows how to play, they are simple to set up, don't take very long and are challenging and fun. They are perfect to play in a cafe.

Liar's Dice is also super easy to set up and to learn. Unfortunately it's not very well known, but I personally love it. (It's that dice game from Pirates of the Caribbean 2).

"Who Am I ?": This game is featured in Inglorious Basterds. All you need is a Post It Note and a pen. Fun, easy to learn and quick.

Forbidden Word: Featured in Love is War. Played in the same way as "Who Am I ?", but instead of a character you write a word. The players then hold a conversation. If a player says the word assigned to them (they don't know what the word is), they lose.

It sounds to me like the main problem is that you might not have enough interesting things to do or say during the coffee date, which is the main issue.
