Not sure how I feel about this one. I understand wanting to reach across the aisle... but let's just say this episode wasn't one of my favorites. A lot of contradictions, it was hard to follow at times. Is Elle pro-life? Is she anti-LGBTQ+? Does she still believe in rigid gender roles? (I cringed at the ideas around "men lead, women follow")

So. As a woman who was a “gold star Republican” (Elle’s phrase, note that it was co opted from Lesbian terminology but whatever) until mid life, I had some thoughts.

Ladies, it took everything I had to finish this episode. I trust you, so I white knuckled it through. I decided to share my feedback instead of just saying nothing.

I see the power in FDS being used on both sides of the aisle. And Elle has a lot to offer us all. She’s witty, she’s a woman of color and a Muslim, and ex military. All pov I am interested in.

At least three times she either quoted without source, or flat out mis stated facts. I only noticed one correction by the hosts. She is clearly not as far along in her journey as the hosts. It was painful to listen to.

I will probably pass on the political podcast as a result. I was disappointed I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I am not the target.

I’m sorry but she lost me at “political values do not equal moral values.” You can not say that with a straight face when it comes to healthcare, foreign policy, welfare and socialized aid, immigration, economic, racial and ethnic inequality.

Also I would appreciate it if Elle could clearly list her stance on, say the top ten issues in US politics rn just so we could get her actual stance on things (there was a lot of tiptoeing around what she really thinks it means to be a conservative). At best she sounds like a “listen to both sides at all times” type of libertarian or something.

All in all, I’m not sure what to make of Elle for now - but there definitely needs to be a clarifying post or podcast about what Elle thinks makes her a conservative.

Yeah, I don't want both-sides-isms. Was considering the Patreon for the bonus content, but I'm gonna pass for a while and see how this shakes out. Elle's stances didn't seem to be defined, and those are honestly pretty important. American conservatives are usually anti-women's/human rights issues. If I wanted to listen to conservatives, I wouldn't be on board with FDS.

I don't think elle was very articulate in her comments. She kind of flip flopped around, she didn't really have her points mapped out. For example she says that she's all about individual rights and then goes on to say that the individual could also be a nuclear family, a business, etc.

Also, how can she say she was ever liberal when she literally never voted for a democrat? It makes no sense. And she joined the military at 18 and immediately "became" conservative.... She's always been conservative, she was never liberal.

Edited to add : I was really excited to hear from a conservative listener. I have a lot of conservative friends and like talking to them about politics. But she seemed to tip toe around her real beliefs. And again, she wasn't coherent, lots of word salad.

This could possibly work if a conservative was chosen from a different country but the American conservative agenda is inherently incompatible with female progress. I do not think Elle added anything of value to this podcast episode. I understand the desire to have a large tent for all women but I cannot say this is the best way to go about doing it.

Lilith, Reux, and Savannah should consider the fact that they might actually be PUSHING AWAY current FDS subscribers.

Terrible episode. Elle is inchorenr at best. As an older woman, I have no interest in listening to some one who is still trying to figure it all out. The other women are clever, funny, and well- versed in feminst/politixal issues. Sure, they have a young perspective, but it is tempered with education and experience. I don't see what value Elle adds to the conversation at all. And she butchered her stupid cliche: it's money, not brains.

Okayyyyy listening to this podcast now, typing my thoughts as I listen.

- Elle refers to the hosts (grown women) as a "great group of girls"

- "If you're not a liberal when young you're heartless, if you're not a conservative when old you're brainless" Uh.

- Elle's views start shifting after joining the military (heard this one before)

- Calls herself a gold star republican despite being pro-lgbt/pro abortion, etc. What? Do you know what republican stands for in the US? Cause it's not pro women.

- I don't like the comparison between Elle's views and Latino culture where they vote democratic, yet have conservative views. I live in a Latino majority city and you know WHY they have conservative views? It's because of the Machismo culture they live in where they believe women are inherently submissive, should not only work but cook and clean for everyone as well. My brother and I are both married or dating a Mexican person and their cultures are: His mother in law gets on her knees to remove her husbands boots every day. She's into her 70s and cooks and cleans for everyone, every single day and no one shows her an ounce of appreciation because it's "expected". My boyfriend's mother was cheated on and beaten throughout her relationships, picked up odd jobs to pay the rent because her husbands would piss it on escorts (males faced no repercussions from all of this) while cleaning and cooking for 7 kids. No one sees anything wrong with this. That's the fucking Democratic vote/Conservative view lifestyle. They don't vote FOR WOMEN. They vote for pro immigration, better healthcare, etc. They don't give a single fuck about whatever politicians say for women. They only care about what benefits THEM. THAT'S THE DEMOCRATIC VOTE/CONSERVATIVE VIEW.

- Morals has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR POLITICS. CONSERVATIVES ARGUE AGAINST HEALTHCARE AND ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE WITH LESSER BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO EMPATHY TOWARDS GROUPS UNTIL THEY ARE PERSONALLY AFFECTED.

I stopped listening around the 14 min. mark because this is a fucking joke. The latino culture got me heated, and the morals part was icing on the cake.

Going to be dipping out of the podcast if this is what we're allowing. I get allowing all sorts of people in to reach a larger audience, but if someone identifies with a political identity that harms women then yeah, no. This is not it.

I don't believe that Conservative values have any place in FDS. I do not want to hear "both sides of the argument" especially when they are as incoherently expressed as Elle's.

I am a paetreon subscriber and this is not the content i am paying my money for. I sincerely hope this will be the first and last we hear of Elle, otherwise I may have to rethink my subscription.

Lots of mental gymnastics in this podcast. 84% of the world population has a religion. 93% are theists (believe in a god or gods). They talk about the importance of hearing other viewpoints but then bash religious people.

Elle states that she grew up muslim but rebelled against her parents by adopting liberal views. This is right after saying that she has never voted liberal... contradiction much? She held her muslim values but she's not religious, making her conservative without being religious? This woman is all over the place.

"Morality wasn't really a part of [American]politics until Reagan."

So she's incoherent AND misinforming about American history. Anyway, her and Reaux talk about morality, religion, and government. They both seem to believe that morals are subjective.

I have mixed feelings about this new host and episode.

On one hand, I agree that FDS should be for everyone, and that is women who follow FDS will have different political and socioeconomic backgrounds. Not to mention, FDS itself does not adhere to one particular ideology. That means that you will find radical/gender critical feminists (like me) in the same group as conservatives and trans-right activists.

That being said, there multiple occasions where what she was saying was either factually incorrect, a fallacy, or simply eyebrow-raising. If Elle was a potential suitor, I would block and delete her - as per FDS values - yet I fail to understand why the hosts let some of the things she said slide under the rug as though everything was perfectly fine.

Oh and ffs, we are WOMEN. ADULT HUMAN FEMALES. WE ARE NOT GIRLS.

We talk all the time about not providing platforms to men, to people who hate women, to those who actively root for our subjugation, and then... Give Elle the mic? In what seems like is going to be an ongoing role?

Elle is a LVW. Seems to have some internalized misogyny as well as a bit of "cool girl" vibe (I get this feeling from most conservative women tbh, it's like they're proud to be playing in the misogynist boys club of the GOP). Her opinions were all over the place and not stated clearly, she was offensive at times, not as well spoken as our other hosts, and just... Abrasive.

I don't see the reason to platform this kind of person. I do understand wanting different viewpoints, but Elle ain't the one.

Conservative doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. But considering what it means in American politics, I have to say I don't get this. I listened to the whole episode, and I'm gonna pass on Elle. I'll just broadly say I'm from the EU and not leftist/liberal in all my beliefs at all, but conservative culture in America is SO weird that I don't know what to say to a woman who still stands firmly on that side alone and thinks that quotes which say things like if you're an adult and not conservative, you have no brain...are the first thing she should say. So strange.

To speak about islam like you lived the experience or like you were born and raised in a Muslim country Or to talk about Africa like it's a small tiny country that you know everything about and not an entire continent that has a well documented history of colonisation and exploitation and to also basically deny what colonisation did to Africa ( this made me question why deny colonisation what is the motive clearly not criticism of socialism so what was the point she was trying to make by saying this profoundly wrong statement??) , I do not want to offend anyone but this episode was extremely intellectually disappointing and The woman in the episode sounds uneducated, ignorant and offensive. disappointed.

I was expecting that the hosts would ask Elle questions so we could get to know her conservative views more. Like another commenter mentioned, I want to know where she stands on issues that affect women like abortion. I also would like to know more about her views about women in the military, especially now that that there is more media coverage on women in the military who are getting assaulted, raped and/or killed.

Honestly, this episode didn’t interest me much. I will give the new podcast a chance because I want to support anything FDS, but based on this episode, it seems like FPS won’t be a podcast I look forward to listening to every week. I mentioned this in the initial post announcing this podcast but I would have rather much preferred a podcast that focused on other topics. I even mentioned on the initial post that I would want a FDS podcast specifically devoted to women of color and discussing our dating issues among other issues we face. As much as I love FDS and how this this subreddit has transformed my life, I wish that the mods would have really thought about whether this podcast is something that we really need right now or something that could benefit FDS followers like the current one does.

I said on the other post and I’ll say it here. There’s no way a 1st generation African immigrant can speak on US politics through the lens of a black woman in America. Her family has experienced none of the effects of being black in America for the last 400 years. African American women vote in the interests of our community. Elle is not a part of that community. She is of the black diaspora but she is not a Black American. Her elders didn’t experience Jim Crow America, Mass Incarceration, War on Drugs, and other republican-created anti-black movements which has shaped our identity as black women in America. Not only do we have to deal with white supremacy but we also have to deal with the hoteps and black pick-mes who still actively try to harm us.

If 90% of African American women voted democrat, how does this person represent us? Why does she even have a platform to? She does not align to the values of our community.

Love the plan to have a politically themed podcast. Im echoing other women who also feel politically homeless seeing how "anti-woman" liberal feminism and leftism has become, but still being liberal. I dont love the idea of having an American styled conservative though.

Politics, in the US at least, is always about pushing an agenda. And I saw a glimpse of that when Elle politely disagreed about not alienating men and working within the system - without saying patriarchy. Like, no. Lets get to installing the matriarchy, THEN we can talk about working within the system. This rubbed me the wrong way after the discussion about victim complexes and not doing anything to remove the patriarchy that puts women in that position in the first place.

I started listening to this episode with an open mind, probably more than others. I am the closest to a true centrist as you're going to find in the US. People classify me as liberal or conservative based on their own beliefs. Liberals think I'm conservative, conservatives think I'm liberal. So I went into this thinking that depending on the conservative they chose, their viewpoint could be very refreshing and say a lot of what I've been thinking.

For those who stopped listening at the beginning, sometimes it's good to hear a viewpoint, especially from a woman, that you don't agree. Because I basically disagreed with almost everything Elle had to say until the very end of the podcast. But just because I disagree with someone doesn't mean I don't want to understand them. What happened to them that created who they are today? Some of what she said was understandable because people are imperfect. Joining the military was basically throwing herself in to the deepest pool of cultural patriarchy and misogyny you can find in the US. She was indoctrinated, plain and simple, for better or worse. It's not much different from what liberal feminism has done but liberal feminism is a wolf in sheep's clothing. How many of us would have similar beliefs if we'd been in her shoes? No one can't truthfully answer that question without living it.

It wasn't well articulated but it seemed like Elle was trying to explain who she was and who she is now. A lot of what she said about who she became after the military was not spoken about in past tense so it was hard to distinguish how much she still believes and how much she now realizes is bogus. I think it only became clearer that she was talking about at least a portion of it as her past beliefs at the very end of the episode. So if you didn't listen to the whole episode you wouldn't have heard it. She speaks in direct opposition to a few previous statements at the end of the show. It's still confusing as hell and I have no idea exactly where she stands. Hence the fact that it was not well articulated.

Elle did not invent the saying "if you're not liberal when you're young..." It's something I've heard many time but only from conservatives who had similar life experiences as Elle (switching from liberal to conservative). I do think the saying has tiny kernels of truth to it. Your political views should evolve and become more nuanced as you actually experience life and are less worried/effected by your parents' or peer political views. But the real message is anyone who doesn't become extremely conservative as they age is intellectually inferior. She's just parroting the message she's been taught.

She made several very problematic statements. They've all been hit upon by other posters but the ones that stood out for me were political values vs moral values, "gold star Republican," socialism in Africa, and the garbage about conservatives being the party of personal freedoms. I know 60+yr old Southern white men who didn't vote Republican in 2020 for the first time in their lives. If you're still a "gold star Republican" after the 2020 election, you're the one without a brain. Especially when you're proud of it.

In a nutshell, I think FDS having a political section is a good thing. FDS offering a conservative viewpoint to those who want it is a good thing. But Elle specifically is not the person to provide this. She lacks the critical thinking and communication skills that FDS needs for this to be beneficial.

One of the the most upvoted comments claimed that Obama’s win over Clinton in 2008 proves that all women are more disadvantaged than all men.

I try to ignore the privilege-blind/gaslighting comments, because I truly appreciate this community, but I couldn’t let it go.

Lmao I low-key think Elle is me. I'm an African American woman from a super liberal city that joined the military because I was broke and needed to pay for school. And I experienced the same realization of wow not all Republicans are heartless racist people and I drifted from hard-core liberal, to left leaning with some conservative views. And I didn't grow up with a dad, so I've never seen a healthy relationship between a man and woman. I grew up around strong women and incompetent, unfaithful men smh. But I avoided the speedy marriage phase thank God.

ETA: umm seriously being down voted for this?? I've always voted Democrat because that's the most beneficial for women and other minorities....yall are weird af for this 🙄

I’m currently politically homeless, I’d say my values align mostly left but I’ve been rethinking a lot of things. I’m definitely not religious and had no love for Trumpian rhetoric but the left has taken a strong-arm, censorious approach lately that I can’t get behind (dare I say…..fascistic? 🤭). And, as the pod said, either side screws over women but at least the right will be honest that they see you as Adam’s rib, born to serve. The left does the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” thing I find reprehensible.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this episode to be honest. First off, welcome Elle! I think she melded very nicely with our hosts and had some great one-liners that oozed the FDS spirit. With that, I’m still a bit confused on where she stands on the political spectrum. I find it amazing that we have a conservative co-host who has such a rich background but the way she talked about her values and beliefs felt a bit wishy-washy. I know it’s impossible to please everyone but clarity would help me immensely!

Here at FDS we hone our skills of instantly cutting off men whose values don’t resonate with our own, and there have been many posts about extending the same strategy towards friendships. I’d like to extend a gentle reminder that it is important to not live in an echo chamber and listen to women of all experiences. Wisdom comes from those experiences, and there are fundamental truths that all women live. I’m optimistic, although a little bit daunted, about the discussions these topics will spark in the upcoming podcast. But! As FDS expands its platform it will allow for more nuanced conversations and be able to extend its principles to ALL women

All that being said, I’d like to thank the hosts for finding Elle to be their co-host and hope that there are more conservative guests to come. I understand that politics (especially in the US) are extremely polarising at it is extremely difficult to have discussions about them. There is value in hearing from all women in their dating experiences, even if there are disagreements when it comes to fundamentals.

FdS is for all women 💗 In my country I am considered "conservative" (though that means different levels in different countries) but I don't hate women with different political views to me, just as I would not hate someone with a different race or religion. I actually hate the way it is seen that if you are "conservative" you must be regressive and bigoted, I used to be left voting, but changed because I was disenchanted with the incompetence of the left party. Unity and diversity of voices is the way forward!

I'm a bit surprised at the feedback. I love that a gesture was made "across the aisle" so to speak - it speaks to the maturity and open-mindedness of FDS (definitely not qualities that detractors mention often!). I also LOVE that it puts boots on the FDS desire to make life better for *women* - and women are not a monolith. Women come with different politics, religions, socio-economic experiences, nationalities, races, occupations, interests, etc. We are such a massively diverse group and we progress by acknowledging that we are not always going to agree with each other, but that women will work together for our collective power aggregation and life improvement. Beautiful and I love it.

I had a bit the opposite experience of Elle, in that I was raised in very red country, and there was one openly, publicly "liberal" kid in my school class. :D I grew up hearing the same negative things about liberals and caricaturizing them as well. Ironically, we all registered as democrats within the expat-ish community. I met many economic liberals in college for the first time and realized that we were both putting a different lens on the same desire or value, in many cases. And the *only* way to change minds - mine and theirs - was to sit together, enjoy our commonalities, and discuss our differences in the context of a trusting, friendly relationship. I heard that happen on this podcast and it made me so happy.

In the privacy of our homes, though, I also grew up watching my community identify loudly and heatedly (even in red territory) as democrats because yt people are republicans ... and then all vote red because they didn't want to pay more taxes as small business owners. So I get that disconnected experience and loved hearing that someone else shared it - it's so confusing! :)

Elle didn't spell out exactly why she sees herself as right, but I appreciated her mention of 2nd amendment rights and assume that's the main driver of her affiliation with the right. I love that the podcast highlighted the complexity of pursuing female liberation, as well as how everyone's feminist beliefs progress and change over time ... and are still in flux as we all continue to grow and hear others' experiences. Beautifully done, hosts and Elle!

I like Elle, she sounds sweet and funny, I loved listening to her. But idk how qualified she is to talk about politics, or for that matter how qualified any of the hosts are. They also come from different countries with different political atmospheres. In true American fashion we already have controversy over hosting a conservative on the pod. I don't think that having a conversation with a right winger is setting back women's rights or anything but I really really hope this doesn't split up the community.

I think the mods are getting a really hard time here. FDS has stated that it plans to be bipartisan in order to reach as many women as possible. We cannot just pretend that conservative women don't exist, and I say that as a socialist. I would also be wary of being so black and white about the Left and the Right. The world is bigger than America and in my country at least (UK) the Labour party (UK version of Democrats) is currently supporting some extremely anti-woman legislation. Biden is also no feminist.

I appreciate what the mods are trying to do and I think some of the people who are leaving quite authoritive comments telling the mods that they must not have a conservative woman on the pod should consider what a mod said in a post a few days ago about some women on this (dating) sub wanting FDS to be turned into a seperatist/anti-dating sub: the mods have worked incredibly hard to create and grow FDS and it is they who are best placed to choose the direction that FDS goes in, not members who have in comparison contributed very little to the sub.

Ignoring conservative women risks making FDS a fringe group that will eventually stagnate.

I’m partly through this episode, and kudos to all of you being willing to listen to someone explaining the difference between politics and morals. I lean conservative and have always been a libertarian in political philosophy. I’m a practicing cradle Catholic and in my 50s. The reason I lean conservative in the political sphere has to do with the role of government and individualism vs collectivism. I’m firmly on the populist side. Neither the D or R parties in the US represent me any more. I’n my opinion they have both turned elitist and collectivist - it’s just that one side is more open about it. So when I hear discussions about liberal vs conservative in almost all media it’s very frustrating because they don’t establish a baseline about what those terms mean before discussing. First before there can be a dialogue that is productive the two sides have to explain what they mean by those terms without being shouted down. So this is refreshing!
